What the viewers see via the square box is a far from accurate picture of the hap-'penenings on his stage. On Sunday, Ed and his crew took over the Expo Theatre in Montreal for a colorful hour of film and live entertainment Instead of watching from the armchair, this department accepted an invitation to attend the live performance in Montreal. And what an eye-opener it was. Thanks to monitors, itwaji possible- to follow both the stage action and the camera shots.

The majority of the presentation was an Optical illusion; giving viewers the idea the stage was enormous and that the cast liad plenty of room in which to work. Not so. The live performance was a panic, while Ed was giving the build-up to' an act, there were men all over the stage, changing scenes and lighting. His conrentrationJs to be commended. With all the.

hustle and bustle in the background, it didn't throw jiim once. And, he's been spoiled by the ready-made television set-up in the CBS New York theatre. Ed relies on cue cards for his introductions, mounted either to his right on the sound boom, or just above the camera he faces. But, during the entire hour, he never left the stage once, standing just to the left of the performers, smiling encouragingly. The whole show was rehearsed in the afternoon Toniming and worked wit- to the last second.

Ed's tour of the fair, of course, was on film but with live music and the Peter Geo-naro dance routine, a combination of both. Petula Clark and Ronald Turrini were the best of Ed's guests and Alan King was enjoyable with his tips-for-husbands routine. But the cigar-carrying comic was a bit of a disappointment in RIP KIRBY 13 'm'l'r" 1 1 varjawer jffivfn rith ants out in the audience holding his "idiot cards." Ed genuinely enjoyed his visit to Expo. He put on his really big shew in the shadow pf an even greater one and came off well. This must have been Be Kind to Canada Week for U.S.

television stars. Hard on the heels of Ed Sullivan, along came Perry Co mo Monday with a salute to Canada's centennial (the only thing the Sullivan show neglected to mention). Supported by Oscar Peter-, son and Monique Leyrac," the Como "Show of the Week" was an entertaining and relaxing hour that showed what television can do, given a few weeks of rehearsal. and without much ado, a good soccer game came, to the tube on the weekend. However, this hardly dampened our hero's enthusiasm and language, the latter leaving little to the imagination and so unlike the Raymond Burr of the do-good lawyer fame. "Ironsides" shaped up as something interesting to come. The dialogue and the characters blended well and the over-all production was effective.
