11 5 Bimv iseays if s. After Trail lines in 1st, Ar 4 1 0-13 A. i i By Dick Young All this season, Col. Earl Blaik has been trying to tell a scoffing public that his reserve power, like a mickey finn, ain't what it's cracked up to be. Nothing could better prove the coach's point than the stunning early action yesterday at West Point where Army, supposedly facing a pushover in the Melville PT Raiders, started its second team and fell behind to the shocking tune of 13-0 in the first quarter.

-a 1 College Football Lions Batter EAST 5 IT- tNLWS lolo by Ulcu) Cifv Co Too Many Violets to CI It was three-to-one that the CCNY Lid on the ground was not going 4o catch a first-quarter forward pass which was intended for him. Three NYU's, Kaufman (50), Melone (40) and Capozzoli (kneeling) were there to bar his way. The latter made the interception in game at Ohio Field. NYU won the game, 47-0. Cy Kuppersmith, overseas veteran, quarterbacked an unstoppable offense, pitched two touchdowns and scored three others as the blanked in two earlier games this season, racked up the largest score in their 56-year-old rivalry.

Blaik then sent in his football team and the first-line Cadet crush er machine-gunned four quick touchdowns for a-27-13 half-time lead. Army won, 55-13. FIRST PERIOD The Cadets confidently started their second stringers, left ttem in there through an atrocious attack of umblitis, and ran in the varsity toward the end of the quarter to make up the stunning 13-0 deficit into which the reserves had fallen. McWilliams starting the hobbling on Army's first offensive play, after the Cadets had taken a punt on their 40. West pounced on the free ball, and in two plays the Raiders had carved a first down on the 30.

Welsh then swept wide around left flank on a naked reverse and sped into the end zone corner untouched. Welsh's placement was blocked. Rowan's fumble stalled Army before it could start a counter-attack, and a PT quick-kick by Welsh bottled up the Cadets back on their 20. Once again Army tried to get rolling, and this time it looked as if the inevitable explosion' had come. Chabot ripped off successive chunks of 15 and 14 yards to the PT 40, and McWilliams twinkled-toed over the goal for what looked like a TD on the next play.

But Chabot had foolishly thrown a clip after McWilliams had broken into the clear, so tally was voided and Army set back to 22. Sauer swept right back to 5, but on the next play, McWilliams again fumbled, and McDonald recovered for PT on the 2. Hoague kicked out on his own 30, and Army, still showing its disdain, ran McWilliams into the line with fourth down and seven to go. Shorty fell a yard short of mark and spirited Raiders took over on their 21. A Thomas-to-McDonald pass advanced to 36, and then Welsh, a twisting bundle of lightning who helped Penn tie Army, 13-13, two years ago, swished 64 yards for a TD.

after taking a shovel lateral from McDonald. Thomas converted, and the amazing Raiders were ahead. 13-0. At this point, coach Red Blaik, convinced that his reserves aren't what they're cracked up to be, decided to stop the foolishness and rushed in the varsity. Four minutes remained in the first quarter, and the Cadets marched 52 yards before Blanchard was stopped an inch short of a first down on the PT 5, where the Raiders took possession as the unbelievable stanza ended.

Score: Raiders 13, Army 0 SECOND PERIOD Regaining possession on the PT 41, Army was off with a bang. On the first play, Davis flashed through left tackle, cut smartly to his right and swooshed over the goal. Walter-house's placement flew wide. Another fumble, this one by Blanchard, who was being stopped with incredible success by the fighting Raider line, halted the next Army threat on PT 10, but the Cadets came right back a moment later to rip off 40 yards in five plays, with Blanchard barging over from the 1. Walter-hause's toe tied it at 13-13.

A few minutes later, Army took a kick on its own 22, and on the first play Davis zoomed through the right side, broke into the clear behind Pitzer's key block, and blazed 78 yards to the goal. Little more than a minute later, Pitzer recovered a loose lateral on the PT 6, and Blanchard bulled over on his second crack. Walterhouse converted these quickies. Score: Army 27, Raiders 13. THIRD PERIOD Several clipping and roughing penalties, one of which voided a 25-yard touchdown pass, slowed up the Army avalanche, but immediately after the ball was called Colgate, 31-7 (Continued from preceding page) 2:19 of the third period.

First Kus- serow stepped back with the kick- off to the Colgate 47, then it was Rossides to the 35 and a Caruso- to-Rossides pass to the 17. Her Colgate stiffened so Will, big full back recently returned after four years in the service, place-kicked a 33-yard three-pointer from the 23 to put the Lions in front, 10-7. Colgate punted out on the 11 after moving to the Lion 32. Columbia quick-kicked back to th Colgate 40 and it looked as though the Lions were out danger. That's what, they thought.

Treich-ler faded and flipped a long pass to Cox who had sneaked behind Olson, the play carrying to th Columbia 18. Cox carried for four straight plays and a first down on the 5. On a straight plunge Piebes hit to the 1, but was stopped on the next two tries at the line. On the third down Cox attempted to go wide and was spilled on the 2 by, Rossides. The fourth down play was smeared by the Lion line on the 6 and the threat was over when Will punted out from behind his goal-line to the 45.

The Raiders failed to make a first down and punted into the end-zone. Caruso lost 7 to his 13, and Nork dropped another. Score: Columbia 10, Colgate 7. FOURTH PERIOD Will got off a bad kick, but Treichler dropped the pigskin when end Les Thompson tackled him. Frank Sniadack, Columbia center, recovered on the Colgate 20.

On a beautiful hidden-ball maneuver, Rossidos sneaked the right side to the 8, then to the 5. Then he took a direct pass from center, masked the play beautifully, and handed the ball to Kusserow who smacked over for a touchdown at 1:45 of the period Will converted and the Lions led by 17-7. Cox slipped as he received the kickloff and Colgate had to start operations from its own 8. The Raiders runted to Rossides, who started one way and then handed the ball to Kusserow going the other, and while Colgate zigged, Kusserow zagged back to the Colgate 22. But three line plays lost six yards, so Kusserow punted out on the 17.

Raider passes flopped dismally, and Cox punted to Kusserow, who anteloped back eipht yards to his own 45 as Rossides threw a great block on Treichler. Xork cut into the open around right end and waltzed up the sidelines before being brought down on the Colgate 24. Kusserow fumbled two plays later, and Birkins recovered for the Raiders on the 12. Colgate punted and the Lions began tossing leather. Nork connected to" Olson, bt Heddy intercepted the next one.

Lion 5ubs flocked from the bench with two minutes to go. At 13:52 Dom Blesdale made a pretty catch of a Colgate punt on his own 45, a step from the sidelines and wove his way 55 yards for a touchdown. Will converted to make the score 24-7 for Columbia. Olson intercepted a pass by Ted Leamon with a second to go and romped 57 yards for the final Lion TD. Olson, on a sneak, scored the extra point.

Midway through the stanza, Davis dazzled with a 4v yard punt return to the fl zo. Blanchard then blandly stepped on on a few faces in the center of the line and romped across. Walter house converted his fifth straight. Score: Army 41, Raiders 13. FOURTH PERIOD Secure behind its big bulge, Army sent in the second team once more and mercifully shortened the final stanza to seven minutes.

Chabot heaved to Rowan for 33 yards to the PT 10, and two plays later McWilliams winged arounj left end. shook off three tacklers. and carried a fourth over the goal with him. Ia came the third string ers to get their belated licks. Start ing from their own 27, the frisky scrubs, led by the ground-gob bling of Richmond and GiLette, moved steadily to the 6, where Gustafson flipped to Grimenstem for the tally.

Gustafson converted. Walterhouse evidently grabbed a quick shower for the Saturday nite hop. Final Score: Army 53, Raiders 13 Hoppe to Tour Willie Hoppe and Charles Peter son, billiard players, will make a 12-day tour of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico beginning FIRST PERIOD Melone ran the City kickoff back 30 yards to midfield, and the Violet rushed to a touchdown in eight plays. The most spectacular play of this series was a seven-yard pass to Kuppersmith on the left flank. Cy steamed over and through seven would-be tacklers before being earthed on City's 12 for a gain of 35 yards.

With one yard and down to go on City's 3, Melone dived over right guard for the TD. Capozzoli's placement was wide. NYU charged down the field again soon afterward to City's 18, but the Beavers stiffened and took the ball on downs. NYU's harder-driving backs kept sweeping through the opposition, but lost two certain scores by fumbles, which were recovered by Hoefer and D'Achille of Citv. NYU 6, CCN 0.

SECOND PERIOD NYU spun to two quick first downs on City's 13, but two rushes and two passes failed and the Beavers took over. Kuppersmith ran Ziegler's kick back 11 yards to the 19. Two spinners brought it up to the 7. Four plays later. Kuppersmith faded back to the 25, lobbed one to Melone on the 5 and the (Violet went over standing tip.

Capozzoli converted by place-kick. City took the kickoff and picked up a few yards on the ground, but, refusing to take the air, couldn't make any long gain against the heavier Violet line, so Ziegler had to kick out to 48. In a series of 10 ground plays, NYU had another TD, Kuppersmith capping it by going over from the 7 on fourth down. Capozzoli's placement was good. Score: NYU 20, CCNY 0.

THIRD PERIOD NYU muscled to first downs on City's 39 and 26 before deciding to take to the air. The Violet then lost the ball on downs. Plaia of NYU blocked Ziegler's kick, and L. Weinstein recovered for NYU on the 17. Peora fumbled on the first rush, and D'Achille recovered for City.

The Beavers were bogged down on the and Ziegler had to punt. Pecora ran it back 30 yards down the right side to the 15. Six plays later Capozzoli took a low four-yard pass from Kuppersmith and stepped over the last two yards. Cappy's placement was wide. Score: NYU 6, CCNY 0.

A 15-yard holding penalty was too much for the Violet, which lost the ball on downs on the 3.

After a futile ground play, City kicked out and Pecora ran it back 22 yards to the 9. Cappy crashed to the 2. An offside nullified a Kuppersmith score, but on the next play he took a two-yard flat pass from Capozzoli and jogged the remaining five. Cappy's toe was true. On the first play after the kick off, Aaronson fumbled and L.

Weinstein fell on the ball in the nd zone for another TD. Capozzoli converted. Later Kuppersmith stepped 3 with a nine-yard aerial from Richman. Cappy converted. Final Score: NYU 47, CCNY 0.
