SEPTEMBER 18, 2005 Boston Sunday Globe Sports C19 College football FSUwas kicked into gear in '93 New England roundup Sullivan, Rowe help Bentley roll By Michael Vega GLOBE STAFF When David Gordon's 41 -vard field troal lifted Boston 1 i Sit 1 1 College to a 41-39 upset of top-ranked Notre Dame in If J.J. Sullivan caught one of Kelley Rowe's three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as Bentley defeated Merrimack, 50-28, last night in a Northeast-10 Conference game in North Andover. Sullivan ran for 201 yards on 37 carries. He opened the scoring by catching a 24-yard strike from Rowe near the end of the first quarter. Sullivan later rushed for two fourth-quarter scores.

Bentley (3-1, 3-0) amassed 535 total yards and 31 first downs. Rowe completed 17 of 37 passes for 264 yards, and ran for a touchdown. For Merrimack (2-1, 1-1), Colin Temple completed 17 of 35 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns. He threw two interceptions. AIC 36, Southern Conn.

Call for backup works O'Hagan responds in Crimson victory By Amalie Benjamin GLOBE STAFF oouiiieni (i-t, v-4 iNuruieasL-iu; ieu, 20-3, after Shawn Harris scored on a 5-yard run with; 2:50 to play in the second quarter. Harris rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries. But AIC (1-2, 1-2) scored 33 unanswered points, started by David Ihedigbo's 39-yard interception return late in the first half.

Thorpe scored on runs of 2 and 1 yards in the third quarter as AIC took the lead for good. Bryant 48, Assumption 38 Lorenzo Perry rushed for 221 yards and three touchdowns and the visiting Bulldogs pulled away after a wild first half to edge the Greyhounds. rrn Worcester 13,, i im uy liic tunc ljiaiii O'Hagan stood, rush that followed put Harvard ahead by 7, prompted the fist pump, and sent the Crimson on their way to a 31-21 season-opening win over Holy Cross, their 12th straight victory, the longest streak in Division 1-AA. It was also one of a few reasons including O'Hagan's 258-yard passing (two touchdowns) and 63-yard rushing performance (one TD) that, after the game, coach Tim Murphy said, "Liam will start the next game." "I tried to go out there and be confident in myself on the biggest stage I've ever played on in my whole life," said O'Hagan, whose only mistake was a second-quarter interception that Holy Cross (2-1) turned into a 2-yard touchdown pass and a 14-14 score. "I didn't start off that great, with that interception.

After that, I got a little more confidence in myself and tried to lead the offense." Irvin lasted two series, during which he completed five passes for 43 yards and had one big mistake. On a short pass to junior Corey Mazza, Crusaders cornerback Casey Gough stepped in front of the wide receiver and stole the ball at Harvard's 42-yard line, finishing Irvin's afternoon with a run, untouched, into the end zone. That was it for the former Tulane quarterback, who transferred in the offseason. "Don't write Irvin off," Murphy said. "Don't read too much into it.

But I thought Liam played tremendously well, with toughness. He made some bad reads, but he admitted them. He came back and when the game was on the line, he made plays." Like completing all four of his fourth-quarter passes, for 93 yards. Like picking up on Mazza (seven catches, 131 yards) and Tyler (5-98) being open. Like getting the ball to Clifton Dawson.

Dawson rushed 37 times for 153 yards, 54 in the final 15 minutes. It was only his lOth-best rushing total in his 20 games with the Crimson. But it wasn't exactly a heady performance for a team coming off an undefeated season, against one that hasn't won more than four games since 2000. Penalties (13 for 110 yards) hurt both an offense that advanced easily for 520 total yards and a defense that held HC to just 215, including only 51 from running back Steve Silva (37 rushing, 14 receiving). "You can tell there's a whole big difference between our team this year as compared to last year," said HC coach Tom Gilmore.

"At the same time we are not satisfied with being able to line up and compete. We want to win football games like this." Holy Cross had an opportunity, down, 20-14, in the third quarter, when Gideon Akande fumbled at Harvard's 7-yard line. And still, Holy Cross led, 21-20, going into the fourth quarter, its lead thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by Silva and a second-quarter missed extra point by Harvard's Matt Schindel (initially good but called back and missed wide after a Brad Bagdis 15-yard facemask penalty). Then came defensive stops for both sides. Then the 48-yard pass.

Then the O'Hagan and Dawson connection, the final scoring drive a monster lasting 6 minutes 4 seconds and ending with Schindel's 23-yard field goal, effectively ending Holy Cross's chances. "We're definitely confident in both our quarterbacks," Dawson said. "Liam played outstanding and it's very comforting to know we have someone we can depend on in the quarterback position." ferry scorea on runs oi at, ana oi yaras in me first half, helping Bryant (2-1, 2-1 NE-10) build a 34-32 edge at intermission. The second-ranked Seminoles had just crushed North Carolina State at home, 62-3, and were thrust back into the hunt for a national championship after getting toppled from their perch atop the polls a week earlier by a 31-24 road loss to the second-ranked Irish. As for Gordon's kick? Oh, sure, Bobby Bowden remembers it.

People in Boston weren't the only ones who wildly cheered when the ball sailed between the uprights. A few whoops could be heard coming from Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. So, where was Bowden when he saw Gordon's kick change the fortunes of the Seminoles? "I'm trying to think Bowden said. "I either saw it or I saw a replay, I've forgotten which, but I do remember the kick. It was probably on a replay, though.

We probably had a game that day, too. "But I just automatically knew that Notre Dame was going to win. I mean, we had just lost there and lost our chance of winning a national championship and then, all of a sudden, BC won it. So I could remember seeing the picture, but Gordon's kick seemed like a long one, a pretty long one, too." It was a kick that went a long way in resuscitating Florida State's title hopes. "The thing I remember about that was we had played Notre Dame the week before and it was a 1 vs.

2 and we were 1 and they were 2," Bowden said. "They beat us and then they had Boston College the next week and that was an automatic win. "I mean, Notre Dame was just too strong and, dadgummit, Boston College goes out there and beats them. It was unbelievable. It really just gave us new life and threw us back in the national championship game.

I'll never forget that one." Florida State beat Nebraska, 18-16, to take the championship. Getting picky Ray Henderson set up BC's second score, a 7-yard TD by LV. Whitworth, when he made a diving interception of a deflected pass intended for De'Cody Fagg at the FSU 47. It was Henderson's first interception of the season and seventh of his career Senior defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka, who had been held without a sack in BC's first two games, recorded his first but shared it with sophomore defensive tackle B.J. Raji when they dropped Drew Weather-ford for a 10-yard loss in the second quarter The 17 unanswered points BC scored were the most Florida State's defense had allowed since Miami scored 16 straight (10 fourth quarter, 6 in overtime) in a 16-10 OT loss to the Hurricanes in the 2004 season opener Former BC defensive end Mike Mamula, a 1995 first-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles, was introduced to the crowd at the start of the second quarter One of BC coach Tom O'Brien's concerns about last night was the Seminoles' team speed.

But even before joining the ACC, O'Brien had made it a point to upgrade BC's team speed. Some of the Eagles are starting to notice the results. Said sophomore linebacker Brian Toal, "Compared to when I used to come here and watch my brother Greg, a former fullback, I think our team is a lot faster than in the past." Peek at the future Last night, BC hosted seven recruits, including one who had already given his verbal commitment to the Eagles: Josh Neubert, a 6-foot-4-inch, 248-pound defensive end from Lansdale, Pa. The others: Jordon McMichael, a 6-6, 230-pound tight end from The Breck School in Minneapolis, which also produced BC redshirt freshman wideout Brandon Robinson; Olaitan Ogun-todu, a 6-1, 200-pound safety from Mes-quite, Texas; Roderick Rollins, a 5-10, 180-pound defensive back from Dallas; Wes Davis, a 6-1, 190-pound safety from Spring Valley, Jared Bradley, a 6-1, 210-pound linebackerrunning back from Strathaven, and Tamarcus Porter, a 6-1, 175-pound defensive back from Paho-kee, Fla Last week, BC picked up its 13th and 14th commitments of the recruiting season from Warren Wilson, a 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiverdefensive back athlete from Lowell, and Darius Bagan, a 6-2, 215-pound linebacker from Walling-ton, N.J. The game was scheduled to be available in high definition a feature ESPN promoted throughout the first half however, storm-related difficulties prevented the transmission.

The HD feed from Chestnut Hill to ESPN's Bristol, facilities, was fine, however, heavy rains and electrical storms hit the Bristol area, causing the difficulties.
