itsl4. O'Hagan dropped back as receiver Joe Murt sneaked down the sideline, gaining a step on Cornell cornerback Kevin Rex. Cornell's defensive line and blitzing linebacker Joel Sussman flushed O'Hagan to the right, forcing him to hold the ball, giving Rex enough time to recover. When O'Hagan floated a pass to Murt, Rex broke in front and picked it off, then returned it to Harvard's 21. "There weren't that many people here," Rex said, "but it felt like the place was packed." As the Big Red whooped, Cornell coach Jim Knowles sensed an opportunity.

He had the reigning Ivy League kings on their heels, and he intended to keep them there. He called for a pass that would send his receivers deep, to the edge of the end zone. Ryan Kuhn took his first snap of the game, dropped back, and zipped an out pass to Brian Rom-ney, who had settled into a hole in Harvard's zone defense at the 3. He gathered the pass, scooted around a pair of defensive backs, and leaped over the goal line. Five plays, two fumbles, one interception, one touchdown pass allowed, a ghastly minute and 36 seconds.

Cornell 7, Harvard 0. The deficit seemed much heavier for the Crimson to bear than merely a touchdown, and the game seemed to never be in question after Romney's dive. Harvard, ranked No. 20 in Division 1-AA, was coming off its first loss in 13 games, a 49-24 defeat against Lehigh that ended the school's longest winning streak in 92 years. Playing on the road, under a gunmetal gray sky spitting cold rain, Harvard's spirit was dampened by the knowledge that it may no longer be the Ivy League's team to beat.

"Teams are starting to figure out how to play Harvard," Rex said. "I like to look at it like Cornell's back, but teams are realizing that Harvard is beatable. We can definitely run with them." Things improved for Harvard after Cornell's first score, but just barely, and only because things could not get any worse. Harvard's defense stifled Cornell's attack for as long as it could, but the Crim son offense betrayed the defense by continuing its flurry of giveaways. Harvard led the nation in fewest turnovers in 2002 and '03, but yesterday coughed up the football five times, including twice on special teams by returner Steve Williams.

"We never gave our defense a chance," Murphy said. Kuhn keyed Cornell's next scoring drive with a 17-yard dash, set up by his nifty fake to running back Luke Siwula, who was tackled by two Harvard linemen on the play. On the next play, Kuhn befuddled Harvard again, faking an end-around, then handing off to Siwula, before scampering around the end. While the Crimson figured out who had the ball, Siwula knifed down the middle for a 28-yard touchdown. Harvard returned to the business of giving the game away on the ensuing kickoff.

Williams fumbled, and Cornell recovered. Though the Big Red offense sputtered, kicker A J. Weitsman booted a 38-yard field goal to put Cornell up, 17-0, the margin it carried intohalftime. When the teams reemerged, O'Hagan stayed on the bench. He had thrown three interceptions against five completions in 11 attempts, but he did so without the benefit of his top three receivers, all of whom sat out with injuries.

Richard Irvin replaced O'Hagan and found similar difficulty guiding Harvard's offense. Harvard went three and out on its first possession of the second half. Af-teranother three and out on Harvard's next series, O'Hagan slapped his helmet back on and began warming up on the sideline. Murphy then reinserted his starter. Three plays later, O'Hagan trotted off and yielded again to punter Mike King.

At that point, Ryan Fitzpatrick could have come back to quarterback and, on this day, it likely would not have mattered. "For the last 5V4 quarters, we've played the worst we've played in an incredibly long time," Murphy said. "They outplayed us. They out-physicaled us. And that's a disappointment because we pride ourselves on being a tough, physical team.

They deserved to win. And we did not." INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING O'Hagan 21-87, Dawson 24-39, Sherlock 1-3, Irvin 2-2; Siwula 23-89. Kuhn 16-47, Jackson 5-14, Johnston 1-0. Cornell, Siwula 23-89. Kuhn 16-47, Jackson 5-14, Johnston 1-0.

The disastrous beginning set a fitting tone for the Crimson, who lost their second straight game yesterday, this time to Cornell at a rain-soaked Schoellkopf Field, 27-13. Harvard dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League with the loss, its first to Cornell (2-2, 1-1) in five years, and one in which the final score did little justice to the thoroughness of the defeat.

"To state the obvious," Harvard coach Tim Murphy said, "we got our butts kicked." It began from the opening whistle. Neil Sherlock fumbled the opening kickoff, which he recovered. Clifton Dawson and quarterback Liam O'Hagan botched an exchange, which O'Hagan fell on. After Dawson surged for 3 yards, Harvard faced third and long from IVY LEAGUE Conf. McDonald 3-49. YALE, 13-0 Brown's Hartigan makes mark in win ASSOCIATED PRESS Alex Faherty and Todd Feiereisen each caught 20-yard touchdown passes from Jeff Mroz as Yale defeated Dartmouth, 13-0, during a driving downpour yesterday in the Yale Bowl. It was the first shutout since 2000 for the Bulldogs (2-2, 2-0). Dartmouth (1-3, 0-2) was unable to take advantage of four Yale turnovers, including a fumble recovery on the Bulldogs' 13 by Mike Rabil with 12:10 left in the second quarter. Yale defensive end Brandon Dyches had two of his three sacks on the ensuing Big Green drive, pushing Dartmouth back to the 26.

Dartmouth kicker Erik Hinterbi-chler missed a 43-yard field goal from He also missed a 37-yard attempt with 5:05 left in the half. Faherty caught four passes for 72 yards, including his touchdown grab with 1:52 remaining in the first quarter. Feiereisen caught his TD pass with 9:05 left in the fourth quarter on a fourth-and-5 play, culminating an eight-play, 77-yard drive. Mike McLeod (22 rushes, 83 yards) had two key runs in the drive with gains of 19 and 30 cepting a pass to halt Tiger scoring drives. Penn 53, Bucknell 7 Pat McDermott threw two touchdown passes and the Quaker defense added two scores in a rout of the Bison in a nonleague game in Philadelphia.

McDermott finished 11 for 23 for 180 yards as Penn (3-1) defeated the Bison (1-3) for the third straight season and the ninth time in their last 1 1 meetings. McDermott hit tight end Chris Mizell with a 15-yard touchdown pass 5:21 into the first quarter. Less than two minutes into the second, Bucknell quarterback Mahdi Woodard fumbled at his 8-yard line and defensive back Greg Ambrogi fell on the loose ball in the end zone to make it 14-0. McDermott connected with Matt Carre on a 24-yard touchdown pass across the middle with 8:55 remaining in the half, and Penn scored again just more than a minute later as cornerback Scott Williams intercepted Woodard and returned it 48 yards to give Penn a 28-point lead. Lafayette 14, Columbia 7 Jonathan Hurt scored on a pair of 1-yard runs to rally the host Leopards (5-1) past the Lions (2-2).

Hurt rushed for a career-high 149 yards and the Lafayette defense locked down Columbia's offense for the last 58 minutes, giving up just 82 total yards and forcing three turnovers. Mroz completed 15 of 25 passes for 161 yards and was intercepted twice. The Big Green also fumbled a punt return in the sloppy conditions. Yale's defense held Dartmouth to 1 10 total offensive yards. Jason Bash led Dartmouth with 80 yards on 20 carries.

He gained 31 yards on eight carries in the opening drive. Brown 37, Fordham 14 Nick Hartigan broke Brown's career rushing record as the Bears rolled in a nonleague game in Providence. The senior running back gained 124 yards on 28 carries and scored one touchdown. Hartigan increased his career rushing total to 3,347 yards, which surpassed the record of 3,266 set by Michael Malan from 1999-2001. Hartigan's touchdown gave him 39 for his career, which tied Malan for another Brown record.

Brown (3-1) converted five turnovers by Fordham (0-5) into 20 points, including 10 during a 25-second span in the second quarter. Brandon Markey recovered a fumbled punt, setting up a 30-yard field goal by Steve Morgan that gave Brown a 17-7 lead. Frank Nuzzo then intercepted a Derric Daniels pass, and on the next play, Joe Di-Giacomo threw a 34-yard scoring strike to Lonnie Hill for a 24-7 lead at halftime. DiGiacomo completed 13 of 21 passes for 2 13 yards and two touchdowns. Morgan kicked three field goals, including a 48-yarder with 1 1 :30 left in the fourth quarter.

Fordham's second score was early in the third quarter when Daniels threw a 32-yard pass to Rashawn Haynes. Colgate 16, Princeton 10 Jordan Scott ran for 112 yards and a touchdown as the visiting Raiders (3-2) beat the Tigers (3-1) in a nonleague game. Princeton's offense had little success, scoring its only touchdown on a 34-yard pass from Jeff Terrell to Greg Fields early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers got the ball back late in the game after Colgate's Mike Rava hit a 22-yard field goal, but Terrell threw four straight incompletions and Colgate ran out the clock. The Raiders' first score came on Scott's 1-yard run just a minute into the game, but Rava's extra-point attempt failed.

However, Colgate's J.J. Bennett stripped Jay McCa-reins on the ensuing kickoff, and Mike Sar-ceno threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Kenny Parker two minutes later. Princeton got on the board midway through the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Derek Javarone. Cody Williams had a big day for Colgate on defense, recovering a fumble and inter at New Haven Dartmouth (1-3). 7 11 Vlle(2-2) 20 pass from Mroz (kick failed), 1:52.
