CHILDREN Use Your Ingenuity When Ordinary Rules Don't Fit Your Baby By GLADYS BEVANS Anyone who is a mother, or who has had the physical care of babies and little children, knows that they don't always follow the book." Directions from a doctor or some other advisor may tell you to do this and the babv will respond in such and such a way. So you do- but the baby doesn He hasn read the book, you see! The book may say, for instance, Let him cry himself to sleep it won't hurt him." But you find that it does hurt him to cry for a couple of hours he gets all choked up with mucous, he really can't stop crying, he gives those heartbreaking little sobs, and looks worn out the next morning. So as far as you and your baby are concerned, he's not goin to be allowed to cry himself to sleep. You may decide to try it for 20 minutes then you go in, give him a drink of water and a pat and a tuck, and perhaps sing to him for a few minutes and off he goes to the Land of Nod.

For the next half dozen nights, and naptimes, too, he drops off the minute you lay him down. You think your troubles are ovei. But on the next night he cries and cries. Now what is the answer? Temper? No. not necessarily or not at all.

The answer, I believe, is that a young baby is subject to variable states of body or mind, or both, and so he does not always do what he is supposed to do. The baby who cries one night may be really suffering with his teeth. Or his di gestion may be disturbed. He may have gas pains, to which the only reaction he knows is crying. Or he may at times be so intrigued by living that he resists the oblivion of sleep so when the stsj-e is set for it and he is, willy-nilly.

Universal has spared no expense on the Technicolor production, as the backgrounds and costumes are lavish and gaily colored in the most beautiful of pastel tints. The story has a fairy-tale quality that would apneal to under teen-agers, if it were not for one torture scene that might frighten the little shavers cut of their tender wits. It cannot really be classified as adult entertainment, in spite of the efforts of Edmund Hartmann, author of the original story and screen play, to give it a touch of social significance. Maria Montez, Universal's gift to Technicolor, is gorgeous in the soft draperies that reveal her as the Princess Naila. The latter is the daughter and heiress of the king of an Egyptian sovereign city.

When the king is killed, Naila is led to believe that Herua, leader of a rebel band of slaves, is her father's assassin. She leaves the palace in search of him, but on her way to his hideout, she is attacked by her chancellor's henchmen, sold as a slave and is rescued by a sentimental thief, Merab. Naila finally meets Herua and falls in love with him, before she recognizes him as her father's supposed murderer. When he makes himself known to her, she lures him back to the palace, where he is arrested and thrown into prison. Merab, played by Jon Hall, again comes to the rescue, frees his rival, rvi en's rvic llnestlona (he draft anal military service mar be submitted In person, by letter or by telephone.

I have just found out yesterday that my husband has been promoted to storekeeper second class. I would like to know what to do, as I have been seeing a doctor and will not be able to pay for these visits. Mrs. L. De'L.

Youi husband's promotion does not affect your eligibility for free maternity care under the EMIC (Emergency Maternity and Infant Care) program. It is true that the wives of enlisted men who are in the top three pay grades, which would include second class petty officers, are not eligible to apply for free maternity care under EMIC, but any wife who was eligible at the time of her application continues to remain eligible even though the service man is promoted to a higher grade. Garden Luide By ALVA TAYLOR There's nothing like a homegrown melon, sun ripened on the vine. Melons, of course, are not for the small garden, but if you have the space and like melons, consider putting in a hill or so.

They should not be planted in the open until all danger of frost is past, but if you have a suitable spot indoors you can get a head start by planting some seed now in pots. Outdoors melons are planted in hills. In case you don't know what a hill in garden lingo is, it is not a mound but an area specially prepared into which seeds are planted, as against a drill or a row. Plant about eight melon seeds to each hill and when the second pair of leaves appear thin to the three strongest plants. Hills should be four or five feet apart in each direction.

The soil should be fertile and enriched with fertilizer. A forkful of well rotted manure spaded into each hill will contribute to good growth. Whether you start melons in the house or in the open you can hasten germination by putting some seed between pieces of wet blotting paper. Keep this moist for a few days until the seeds have sprouted. Don't let the sprouts get long enough to be broken during planting.

Once the plants have started to grow in the garden keep them dusted or sprayed with an insecticide against their arch enemies, the striped and spotted cucumber beetles. When the vines have started to run an application cf commercial fertilizer should be given.
