August, and Harry, former congressman and well - known Madison attorney. The early death o the father. August Sauthoff, pioneer Madison tailor and Civil War veteran, and the consequent burden placed upon the widowed mother brought about a singularly beautiful relationship between the four children. They worked together as a unit in each other's service. August received his first schooling at a little red brick school known in early days as Ella Larkin's school which stood where the present Brayton parking lot is located. Later he attended the Six!!; ward school later the Hanev school. In 1894 he graduated from old Central high and then entered the university from which he graduated in 189a. Much nf this schooling wai made possible hy the aid nf his older brother. Ber - thold. Then came four years of teaching i in 1'nynette and Sauk City high schools during which he postponed his ambition to enter medical school in order to help finance the education of his younger brother, Harry. IN 1901 he entered Rush medical college from which he graduated in 1905. This schooling was made possible by aid from Harry and Berthold. This close knit and unselfish devotion among the three brothers has alwavs endured. Dr. August was admitted to practice in Wisconsin n 190.V He immediately took civil service examinations in his chosen field which he passed with the highest possible grades.
