WACO MORNING WS SUNDAY, JUNE 27, 1915. HIPPODROME. Program for the Week, rid Wednesday turT Williamson submarine tures featuring a fight between and a man-eating shark ednesday t. a me Back," Special for Woodmen of the World Thursday pica man Man Who the Modern i plunge his knife into the heart of the beautiful creature. And all the time he was fighting this monster, a man with a moving pit ttire camera was standing In a steel tube the bottom of the ocean taking pictun through a big glass window located in the tobe! Kvery movement of the man and the shark was faithfully re- i corded and made a part of the famous Sunday himself, anij Williamson submarine pictures whit have been prepared by the Universal Mait.rH.*' he Reward.1 Film Manufacturing company, Witil Bessie These pictures are the must and amusing Pari harles Chaplin in ful of their kind ever taken.

They are angs. and there is little doubt he imagines himself looking out upon and thruugh an enchanted forest, where trees of beautiful colorings send forth lace-like shoots that form them- elves into fans, ferns and flowers. He trio, to believe that it is animal life, if he has digested the scientific fact, yet it remains that except for a very sea tiering variety, all the apparently plant-like species are as much animal as is a horse or an elephant. All these beauties and a thousand more, are shown in the wonderful pictures which are being shown at the Hippodrome Monday, Tuesday an 1 Wedrn sday, and the most pessimistic mind has to acknowledge that the Williamson submarine pictures are the greatest moving pictures ever taken since the camera itself was created. They are the wonders of the age, and they bring to the patron of the moving picture theater the secrets of deep, which have heretofore been denied civilization.

They are beautiful, alluring, bewitching, instructive 1 Submarine Pictures. Have you ever wrestled, battled and! fought with a huge shark? If not you have denied yourself a 1 great deal if physical exercise which can only be obtained in a real good tussle with one of the old pirates of the deep. Have you ever laid on your cot, and, as you your eyes, thought of some huge, slimy, slippery fellow, with great big teeth and eyes that hinted to. you there was fury in the oreaturf's SOUP Vou drew yourself under the! and tried to brush the vision from your mind. Kventually you did and you fell asleep.

That was only a dream. It takes a great amount of courage to face one of these fellows, but if you possess the daring of a Williamson, you may be able to get back to earth and tell friends about the terrible fight you had down there in the deep. And in the dark, too! Rut, suppose you had no one who saw your struggle, who would believe you The shark admit it, and the inhabitants down there are of a different world; they never come to earth and so they could never verify your story. For hundreds of years men have been in the habit of returning from long voyages with wonderful tales of adventure, which the public have branded as Hut, what would your friends say if, after repeating your story of the fight with the shark, you flashed a photograph on them, showing that your story a truthful one! Suppose you showed them photographs which had recorded every movement both you and the shark had made in that terrible death battle. What chance would there ht the analytical fellow who goes through picking flaws in the other efforts and tries to smash ail the achievements those who are ever trying to Well, to get down to cold, hard facts, that's just what Ernest Williamson did.

He descended into the waters of Nassau Harbor, with little to shield him from the jaws of one of thos- sea monsters and battled with one of those frierce members of the shark family until he finally managed to but what Ernest and George William son have achieved something which will cause their names to be written in the history of science. Many of you have observed coral beds from a glass-bottomed boat, but seen from above, as much of the real beauty of these gardens is lost as would be of your rose garden If viewed from a soaring aeroplane. It is only by getting among your roses- -or the marine you can appreciate their beauties, and it is only by reason of the recent invention of the Williamson brothers that actual photographs of the ocean floor are shown. To dlsahitse your mind of the belief that these pictures were taken in an acquarium of polyps growing between glass walls, a word as to the apparatus employed in their making may be of interest. Briefly, it consists of a floating vessel having a submarine terminal chamber in which to carry on observations and take pictures, and a telescopic, flexible tube two and a half feet in diameter to connect it with the outer air and furnish to the observer an unlimited supply of fresh air at no more than normal atmospheric pressure.

The observation chamber, which is nine feet long and five feet high, has in the front of it a one and a ha if inch optically perfect German lens glass. Originally intended to replace the clumsy equipment of a diver, the invention of the Williamsons immediately captured the fancy of the government as a means for photographically reproducing a hitherto unexploited portion of the globe. The services of Mr. CL L. Gregory as photographer were secured and Nassau, Bahama Islands, was selected as the scene of operations, not only be- cause of the beauty of the submarine then for growth there, but because the water at Nassau is clearer than anywhere else in the world The marine gardens are about two and a half miles from Nassau, and the best sections are in depths varying from twenty to sixty feet.

They lie between the eastern end of Hog Island and the western end of Athol Island, where a seven knot current is running The bottom is composed of I white coral sand, which gives perfect refraction of sunlight, and as one gets to the bottom of the submersible tube The sea no longer withholds its secrets from man, for man has at last delved into its mysteries and brought back to rth the friuts of his knowledge.
