D16 Boston Sunday Globe NOVEMBER 14, 2004 College football Atlantic 10 roundup Huskies snap skid in double overtime a i i A. 4 I i 4 tr i UC "T- v-. Vt. hi Harvard's Clifton Dawson plunges in from the 1 in the first half, giving the Crimson a 14-3 lead en 1 arvara pens some mstory field goal at 6:36 for Towson (3-7, 0-7), but a 51-yard punt return by David Bailey and a 34-yard pass play from Santos to Ball brought UNH's lead to 45-3 before the half. Santos, a redshirt freshman from Bellingham, has 26 TD passes, breaking the school season record of 23 held by Matt Griffin (1991) and Mike Granieri (2003).

Maine 42, URI 28 Marcus Williams, who rushed for 126 yards and two TDs, became Maine's all-time leading rusher as the Black Bears (5-5, 3-4) rolled in South Kingstown, R.I. ') Maine led, 14-0, at halftjme after a 30-yard fumble recovery run by linebacker Anthony Hicks in the first quarter and a 4-yard run by Montell Owens midway through the second. Williams, who surpassed Lorenzo Bouier (1979-82) with 3,921 career yards, scored on a 37-yard sprint early in the third to make it 21-0, and tacked on a 6-yard TD run. Rhode Island (4-6, 2-5) pulled within 27-21 when D.J. Porter ran 2 yards for a TD, but Arel Gordon returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to give the Black Bears a 35-21 lead.

William Mary 27, James Madison 24 Greg Kuehn kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give the No. 10 Tribe (8-2, 6-1) the victory over the Dukes (8-2, 6-1) in Harrisonburg, Va. James Madison's Justin Rascati completed a 27-yard TD pass to D.D. Boxley with 45 seconds left to tie it at 24. But the Tribe covered 43 yards on four plays to get Kuehn close enough for the winner.

Delaware 23, Richmond 14 Omar Cuff ran for 115 yards and Sonny Riccio threw for 153 as the visiting Blue Hens (7-3, 6-1), ranked 11th, took advantage of four Richmond fumbles. ASSOCIATED PRESS Shawn Brady threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Shane Hopkins in the second overtime to give Northeastern a 37-34 victory over Hofstra yesterday in Hempstead, N.Y., snapping the Huskies' four-game losing streak. Brady finished 16 of 29 for 221 yards for the Huskies (4-6, 3-4 Atlantic 10). He also caught a 40-yard TD pass on a flea-flicker from running back Cory Parks that gave Northeastern a 24-21 lead with 1:31 left in regulation. Chris Onorato of the Pride (5-5, 3-4) sent the game into overtime with a 40-yard field goal with nine seconds left.

In the first overtime, the Huskies went up, 31-24, on Maurice Murray's 3-yard run, but Hofstra evened the score on Anton Clark-son's third TD pass, an 8-yarder to Charles Sullivan. The Pride took a 34-31 lead in the second extra session on Onora-to's 30-yard field goal before Brady connected with Hopkins for the win. Clarkson completed 28 for 49 passes for 290 yards. Onorato's second field goal was the 49th of his career, an Atlantic 10 record. UNH 62, Towson 24 At Durham, N.H., Ricky Santos threw for five touchdowns during the first half to lead the seventh-ranked Wildcats to their fourth straight victory and wrap up the North Division title.

Santos teamed with David Ball on scoring plays of 5 and 27 yards to give New Hampshire (8-2, 5-2) a 14-0 lead 5:20 into the game. Santos threw for his third TD in the first quarter on a 3-yard play to Shaun Diner with 15 seconds remaining to bring the score to 24-0. Ball's third score, this time from 10 yards, extended the lead to 31-0 at 12:30 in the second. Ron Halbruner made a 23-yard time." And the Quakers, who had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Brown and Princeton in their last two games, have been struggling to put up points. When McDermott couldn't start and Bagnoli had to go with freshman Bryan Walker, who'd never taken a college snap, Penn was in trouble.

"We got put in a difficult situation," said Bagnoli, whose squad absorbed its worst home defeat from Harvard since 1967. "Nothing we could do about it. I give Bryan a tremendous amount of credit. It's a tough scenario to put a first-game freshman in." Walker (18 of 30 for 178 yards, 1 TD) performed creditably enough, but the Quakers simply didn't have the firepower to match Harvard. The Crimson have the league's best quarterback in Fitzpatrick, its best running back in Clifton Dawson (33 carries for 160 yards, 1 TD), and its best pair of receivers in Brian Edwards and Mazza, who each made four catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

"They're an explosive team," said Bagnoli, "and their kids came up big." So did the Crimson's defense, which held the Quakers to 263 yards and kept them out of the end zone until Dan Castles caught a 5-yard pass with 2:13 to play. "I kind of goaded our defense all week," said Murphy. "I kept saying, 'How about that Penn Our guys rose to the occasion." Once the Crimson sent Daw Crimson end road skid vs. Quakers By John Powers GLOBE STAFF PHILADELPHIA For 24 years, there had been nothing but nightmares for Harvard's football team inside Ben Franklin's haunted house. The second-chance field goal on a mysterious roughing-the-kicker penalty that beat the Crimson in 1982.

The missed field goal on the last play that cost them the title in 2000. The blowouts 38-7 in 1984, 52-13 in 1988, 33-0 in 1994, and 44-9 two years ago. But the unbeaten Crimson (9-0, 6-0 Ivy League) wiped all of nasty history away yesterday destroying defending champion Pennsylvania, 31-10, before 15,123 at Franklin Field to record their first victory here since 1980, assure at least a tie for their third Ivy title since 1997, and stop the Quakers' record win-. ning streak in league play at 20. "It's great to beat Penn, because they've set the standard for the last 20 years, home and away," said Harvard coach Tim Murphy, whose 15th-ranked varsity needs only to beat Yale at the Stadium Saturday to complete its perfect season in four years and finish with its best unbeaten record since 1901.

"No question, today was our day." Once quarterback Ryan Fitz- patrick lofted a 43-yard touch- Ivy League roundup 1 II 1 1 I II I I I i I 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 i 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 Atlantic 10 standings, 1 1 1 Conf. "That took an awful lot of wind out of our sails," conceded Bagnoli. "That was huge." Then Harvard put Penn away with 17 points in the third quarter, including an 18-yard touchdown pass off a fake field goal from holder Robert Balkema to senior linebacker Bobby Everett, who hadn't scored since high school. "It worked out exactly how I planned it, how I dreamed about it," said Everett. "It was weird that it happened that way." It was dispiriting for the Quakers, who were gunning for their fourth title in five years. "This is not how we pictured it, losing our last game at home," said linebacker Luke Hadden, whose teammates can still get a piece of the title if they win at Cornell and Harvard loses.

"We went out the way we came in, with a loss to Harvard." For the Crimson, who'd lost 1 1 straight times here, it was sweet redemption. This group was only vaguely aware of the history, which Murphy had insisted was irrelevant. "I told our kids, whether it was last year or 20 years ago, it has nothing to do with this football team," he said. For Fitzpatrick and Dawson and the rest of them, the nly history that matters is what they create themselves. Come Saturday, they'll have a chance to write a chapter that uobody in Cambridge has read in 103 years.

Bulldogs Busch threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and Sean Nassoiy had two interceptions to set up Cornell scores. The Big Red (4-5, 4-2) needed the late touchdown after Trevor MacMeekin missed an extra point that would have given Cornell a 27-26 lead. Chad Nice caught a 23-yard TD pass from Busch to tie it, but Adam Brekke blocked the kick for Columbia. Cornell's defense held the Lions on the next possession, setting up Romney's go-ahead touchdown. Romney caught a short pass from Busch on the left side and tip-toed the final 25 yards down the left sideline.

Rashad Biggers and Brandon Bowser each had two touchdowns for the Lions. Dartmouth 20, Brown 7 At Hanover, N.H., Chad Gaudet ran for 137 yards and scored a touchdown to lead the Big Green to their first win. Gaudet scored on a 7-yard run late in the second quarter and Charlie Rittgers hit Andrew Hall with a 12-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter for Dartmouth Erik Hinterbichler converted after each touchdown and kicked field goals of 29 and 20 yards for the Big Green, who had lost eight in a row, the longest tailspin in a football history dating from 1881.
