Trayers Funeral Home 617-436-5700 rectors, but featured such standard horror-flick fare as blood sacrifice, cannibals, malevolent ghosts, and religions turned to evil purposes.

In various reviews, the films were called "barely coherent but rarely dull," "full of inept acting, gore, and ridiculous dialogue," "deliriously insane," and "trashy, low-budget, inept filmmaking at its finest." One critic said anyone who looked closely at the Abominable Snowman, a central figure of "Shriek of the Mutilated," could see that it was wearing shoes. The classically educated Kelleher recognized the ridiculous nature of some of his projects, but he happily reveled in the lower reaches of cinematic respectability. He admired the work of 1950s schlockmeister Edward D. Wood but his sophisticated knowledge of film made his efforts far more nuanced. "He knew exactly what he was doing," said Cindy Lucia, a critic and professor of English and film at Rider University in New Jersey.

"His movies were definitely made with a sense of humor. They were campy, you could say." "He was a real historian and a real intellectual," said screenwriter and director Bill Hopkins, who collaborated on several projects with Mr. Kelleher. "In his appreciation of B- movies, Ed was way ahead of Quentin Tarantino." Not all of Kelleher's efforts were of the slash-and-bleed variety. In 1997, he adapted his own play for the film version of "Stand-Ins," a drama set in 1937 Hollywood that delves into the lives of the doubles of Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and other screen legends.

Mr. Kelleher, who considered himself primarily a playwright, was the author of several plays that were staged in New York, Massachusetts, and in playwriting workshops. The Village Voice praised his 1974 play "Scar Tissue" as an "absolutely fascinating little comedy." Working side by side on adjoining typewriters, Mr. Kelleher and Harriette Vidal churned out six horror novels under their joint byline. He also wrote dozens of works that have not been produced, including comedies and serious plays about illness, family relations, entertainment history, and rock stars.

Edward Kelleher was born in Queens, N.Y., and was pasting movie reviews in scrapbooks by the time he was 10. He studied Greek and Latin at a Jesuit high school, graduated from New York's Fordham University, and served in the Army in Germany, where he worked on the military newspaper Stars and Stripes, In New York, he held various jobs greeter at a steakhouse and errand runner for a brokerage house, among them and became a rock music critic. Under the name of Edouard Dauphin, he wrote a column on drive-in movies for Creem magazine. He later worked on the staffs of Billboard and Cashbox magazines and was a publicist for CBS Records, From 1979 to 1986, he was the publicist for singer-songwriter Melanie. As associate editor of Film Journal International in New York from 1986 to 2002, he interviewed such writer-directors as Jean-Luc Godard and David Mamet.

He also reviewed many films, but had second thoughts about being a critic. Ever prolific, Mr. Kelleher continued to work on his largely unrecognized projects until his illness forced him to stop. His final screenplay was about Tom Neal, a B-movie actor of the 1940s and former boxer who had a law degree from Harvard. Neal once beat up actor Franchot Tone, breaking several bones in his face, and later went to prison for killing his own wife.

Leon A. Jick, 80, rabbi and scholar at Brandeis By Tom Long GLOBE STAFF Dr. Leon A. Jick, 80, a rabbi and scholar whose book "The Americanization of the Synagogue, 1820-1870" became a classic in the study of reform Judaism, died of cancer Thursday in Stanley Tippett House in Needham. Dr.

Jick was assistant rabbi at Temple Israel in Boston from 1954 to 1957 and taught at Brandeis University for 24 years. In "The Americanization of the Synagogue," first published in 1976, he suggested that changes in synagogue life were "piecemeal, pragmatic, and eminently American," according to a story published in the journal American Jewish His- tory in 2002. Dr. Jick concluded that Reform Judaism in America was the result of immigrants' reactions to their new environment and that changes made in the religious communities filtered from the bottom up within the congregation. "He provided the American context for the transformation of the synagogue," Brandeis professor Jonathan Sarna said last week.

"Previous to that it was commonly believed by scholars that German rabbis brought Reform Judaism with them to America." The book still sells briskly. "It is wonderfully written," said Sarna. "He was a real wordsmith." Dr. Jick was born in St. Louis.

After serving in the Army Air Corps for a couple of years, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1947. A committed Zionist, he then worked in a displaced person's camp near Marseilles, France, before moving to Israel, where he lived from October 1948 until December 1949. During his time in Israel, he helped found Kibbutz Gesher Haziv in Western Galilee and taught English at Bet Berl Institute in Kfar Saba. After returning to the United States, Dr.

Jick earned a master's degree at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, and a doctorate in American and Jewish History at Columbia University. Dr. Jick marched for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s, campaigned for the release of Soviet Jewry in the final years of LEON A. JICK SWEENEY BROS.

"He never sought the limelight, but he worked hard for social justice," his son Todd of Chestnut Hill said last week. After serving as assistant rabbi at Temple Israel, Dr. Jick was rabbi of Free Synagogue of Westchester in Mount Vernon, N.Y., until 1966, when he joined the faculty at Brandeis, where he taught until 1990.

"He was wonderful at supplying good humor at a tense moment," said Sarna, who attended many meetings with Dr. Jick. "He was always calming the waves, telling a story that would put everybody at ease." Dr. Jick was chairman of Brandeis University's Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and was dean of its college of arts and sciences for several years. "Leon was instrumental in helping build the department of Near Eastern and Judaic studies into a universally respected center of first-class scholarship and teaching," Brandeis's president, Jehuda Reinharz, said last week.

In addition to his son Todd, Dr. Jick leaves his wife, Millicent (Flink); three other sons, Theo of Needham, Dan of Chestnut Hill, and Andy of Needham; two brothers, Sidney of Ladue, and Hershel of Lexington; and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Temple Isaiah in Lexington. Burial will be in Temple Israel Cemetery in Wakefield..
