C14 Boston Sunday Globe OCTOBER 10, 2004 College football Panthers scratch for win fi i -y'J ')h GLOBE STAFF PHOTOESSDRAS SUAREZ After catching a pass over the middle during the first half, Cornell's Brian Romney is sent for a ride Victory makes balanced by defensive back James Harvey of Harvard. Crimson beam ASSOCIATED PRESS Raymond Kirkley scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, Tyler Palko threw for another score, and Pittsburgh rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Temple, 27-22, yesterday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Pittsburgh (3-2, 1-1 Big East), which trailed, 16-3, before Josh Cummings's field goal late in the second quarter cut the Owls' lead to 10 at halftime, rebounded from a loss to Connecticut in its Big East opener last week. After a scoreless third quarter, Palko found Greg Lee alone be hind the Temple defense off a flea-flicker pitch from Kirkley for a 50-yard scoring play that pulled the Panthers within 16-13. The Pitt defense forced the Owls (1-5, 0-1) to punt after just three plays on the ensuing possession and Palkb guided the offense to the Temple 1.

Kirkley powered his way into the end zone from there to put the Panthers in front, 20-16. Temple, which accumulated 356 yards through three quarters, failed to move the ball again and Kirkley muscled his way into the end zone from the 5 to give Pittsburgh a 27-16 advantage. Palko finished 13 of 18 for 191 yards, and Lee had eight catches for 159 yards. Walter Washington threw a career-high three touchdown passes, but Temple dropped its final Big East opener and lost in conference play for the ninth straight time. Washington, who also posted career highs in completions (30) and passing yards (314), ran for 82 yards on 23 carries.

Washington threw a touchdown pass to Phil Goodman in the final minute, but the Owls failed on the 2-point conversion attempt. Rutgers 37, Vanderbilt 34 -Brian Leonard scored four touchdowns, including a 1-yard run with 1:11 to play, as the Scarlet Knights (3-2) erased a 27-3 second-half deficit to beat the Commodores (1-4) at Nashville. Ryan Hart completed 31 of 40 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns for Rutgers. Tres Moses had 1 1 catches for 147 yards. Leonard gained 50 yards on 15 carries and had three rushing touchdowns.

He also caught nine passes for 64 yards and a touchdown. Rutgers's winning drive covered 68 yards on 11 plays, with Hart completing 5 of 6 passes for 50 yards. The score was the fifth touchdown in six second-half possessions for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers outscored Vanderbilt, 21-0, in the fourth quarter. Commodores quarterback Jay Cutler rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown and completed 14 of 18 passes for 260 yards and a score.

On one such play, Fitzpatrick scampered for a late-fourth-quarter touchdown of 17 yards to put the game out of reach. "With a quarterback like that, they're just going to have a field day," said Cornell coach Chip Knowles. "It just changes the whole game when you have a quarterback who can do that He's just an extremely effective weapon. Their offense is just really hard to handle because they can do so many things." Harvard (4-0, 2-0 Ivy League) unveiled another weapon when Brian Edwards fielded a kickoff midway through the second quarter and brought the crowd to its feet with a 92-yard return, tying the game at 14.

"That was the biggest hole I ever saw on a kickoff," said Edwards. "I just went for it, and then there was just one more guy and I think he missed his angle on me." Though his offensive numbers were subpar, Dawson opened the scoring with his first touchdown reception at Harvard, a 6-yarder from Fitzpatrick midway through the first quarter. But Cornell (1-3, 1-1) had its own offensive weapon in 230-pound tailback Andre Hardaway (28 carries, 130 yards), who gave the Big Red a 14-6 lead in the second quarter with a 10-yard blast through a huge hole in the middle of the Harvard defense. The play capped Cornell's best drive, a seven-play, 78-yard march in which Hardaway ripped off 31 yards on a fake bootleg after quarterback D.J. Busch connected with tight end Chris Eckstein for a 20-yard completion off a bootleg.

Hardaway also scored Cornell's first touchdown with a 2-yard dive off tackle that capped a four-play, 51-yard drive less than two minutes after Harvard's first touchdown. After Harvard rallied for a 21-14 halftime lead, Cornell regained By Tony Chamberlain GLOBE STAFF A shutout victim IVillfllTrSl year with Harvard, which put up 27 points, Cornell yesterday was determined to stop the Crimson explosive tailback, sophomore Qifton Dawson, and his streak of nine games with 100 or more rushing yards. Dawson, who transferred last year from Division 1-A Northwestern, where he was redshirted in 2002, was coming off a 167-yard game last week against Lafayette. And stop him, the Big Red did. In a 34-24 Crimson win at Harvard Stadium before 13,334, Dawson was held to 61 yards in 21 carries, just 20 yards in the second half.

But in so doing the Big Red learned what Harvard coach Tim Murphy means by a balanced attack. As most of the Cornell defense was focused on Dawson, senior quarterback Ryan Fitzpa-trick passed for 317 yards and rushed for 102. And while Knowles praised the gritty play of his team, he also acknowledged that as the game wore on, there was just too much Crimson offense to deal with. His Big Red, he said, "are just about one player away from Harvard, and that player is Fitzpatrick." Harvard coach Tim Murphy was pleased with the way his team was able to adjust with the defensive focus on Dawson. "Cornell is extremely physical, very well coached, and we were very fortunate to win," he said. "The obvious key was that they were going to, at all costs, defend our running game and Clifton Dawson. We feel like our offense is balanced to the extent that no one is going to take away our offense by stopping one phase of it Fitzpatrick really stepped up today and took what they gave us, both running and throwing."
