ASSOCIATED PRESS Anthony "Buddy" Sbona, the former mayor of Middletown, known for his work on economic development in the city, died Monday. He was 73.

Mr. Sbona was one of the most prolific political leaders in Middletown's history. He served as mayor for three terms from 1969 to 1975 the longest a Republican has been in the office. Mr. Sbona also served as city clerk for 20 years and three terms on the city council.

"He was really one of the icons of Middletown politics because he always followed his heart to do what was best for the community, regardless of political affiliation," said Mayor Domenique Thornton. Mr. Sbona was born in Middletown and played football for Middletown High School. He leaves his wife, two sons, two brothers, a sister, and a grandson.
