"But I still have a lot to learn. I don't think that was my best game." It wasn't long before Fitzpatrick and Harvard got rolling. After a botched field goal on their first possession (the kicking game needs some work), Fitzpatrick drove the team 33 yards in 77 seconds, tossing a 33-yard TD pass to Edwards. That short drive had been set up by Edwards's 42-yard punt return. The Fitzpatrick-Edwards collaboration started a stretch where Harvard scored touchdowns on four straight possessions on drives of 73 yards (a 9-yard run by Dawson), 65 yards (a 1-yard keeper by Fitzpatrick), and 74 yards (a 3-yard run by Tyler).

That made it 27-3 with 7:19 remaining in the first half and the game was basically over by then. Holy Cross got no closer than 27-16 early in the third. The Crusaders gamely tried to stay in it, getting excellent play from reserve quarterback Brian Schiller (259 yards and two TDs), but it was simply a case of their defense being powerless against Fitzpatrick and the boys. Said Holy Cross coach Dan Allen, "We couldnt stop them. We didnt have enough.

We got beat by a pretty good football team." That they did. In this case, the numbers do not lie. But in the immediate aftermath of his record-setting performance against Holy Cross, the Harvard quarterback wasnt too impressed.

Fitzpatrick, a junior economics major, established a school record for individual total yardage in the Crimson's season-opening, 43-23 dismantling of game, but overmatched Holy Cross before a sunsplashed crowd of 10,312. Fitzpatrick passed for 359 yards and ran for another 112, accounting for a staggering 471 total yards, 22 more than the previous high established by Neil Rose last year against Dartmouth. Fitzpatrick passed for two touchdowns, ran for a third, and controlled things throughout as if wielding a joystick, as Harvard improved to 34-21-2 all time against Holy Cross. The Crusaders dropped to 1-2. The Harvard offense came close to setting a school record for total yards, amassing 636, 4 shy of the record set in 1999 in a 63-21 rout of Dartmouth.

Receiver Brian Edwards had seven receptions matching his entire haul from last year for 152 yards and also threw in a 42-yard punt return for good measure. Rodney Byrnes had six catches for 93 yards and, like Edwards, had a touchdown. Sophomore tailback Ryan Tyler ran for two touchdowns and freshman Clifton Dawson ran for another, as the Crimson blew out to a 27-3 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back. Harvard, which had 412 total yards at halftime, would have cracked the half-century mark had it not missed two extra points and two short field goals. Crimson coach Tim Murphy downplayed all the flossy numbers, saying, "We would have been happy to come out of here with a 10-7 win." But he couldnt help but rhapsodize about Fitzpatrick, who was 20 of 27.

Fitzpatrick did have a rare interception, only his second in 214 attempts at Harvard. "He will allow us to be in every football game we play because of his versatility and his ability to read defenses," Murphy said. "He's very difficult to defend." Fumbles-lost 4-2 Penalties-yards 7-56 Possession 25:59 Sophomore Treavor Smith kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal as time expired yesterday to give Fitchburg State a 17-14 victory over Western New England College in a New England Football Conference nondivision matchup in Springfield. Smith's kick bettered the mark of 43 yards he set last year against Bridgewater State and rescued the Falcons (1-1), who squandered a 14-0 lead in the fourth quarter. Curry 57, Maine Maritime 36 Kevin Holleran passed for 261 yards and four touchdowns, and Raphael Zammit rushed for 114 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on an 80-yard pass from Holleran, as the Colonels (3-0) rolled at Castine, Maine.

Nichols 33, Westfield State 28 Anthony Smith ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns, and Ben Karter scored on a 38-yard punt return and a 5-yard pass from Michael Carv-en forthe host Bison (1-2). UMass-Dartmouth 34, Bridgewater St. 13 Shawn Theriault ran for 195 yards and two touchdowns, and Ron Casper returned two interceptions for scores at Dartmouth for the Corsairs (3-0). MIT 42, Mass. Maritime 18 Adam Love threw three touchdown passes, two of 55 and 40 yards to Tom Kilpatrick, and David Ostlund ran for three scores as the Engineers (2-0) romped in Cambridge.

NESCAC Tufts 23, Hamilton 14 Mark Tilki returned a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown and Steve Cincotta rushed 45 times for 166 yards as the Jumbos (1-0) prevailed at Clinton, N.Y. Williams 24, Bowdoin 13 Jeff Reardon passed for 307 yards and Tyler Shea ran for three short-yardage touchdowns as the Ephs opened with a victory at Brunswick, Maine. Trinity 30, Colby 6 Erik Paisley and Josh Pitcher each threw a touchdown pass while' splitting time at quarterback for the Bantams (1-0) at Water-ville, Maine. Amherst 34, Bates 0 Fletcher Ladd rushed for 166 yards, including a 90-yard touchdown, as the Lord Jeffs (1-0) blanked the Bobcats (0-1) in Lewiston, Maine. Freedom Springfield 49, Kings Point 28 Junior quarterback Ryan Sylvia rushed for 117yards and a touchdown and threw for 128 yards and three scores as the Pride (3-0), ranked 19th in Division 3, topped the No.

25 Mariners (2-1) in Springfield. Northeast-10 Merrimack 16, AIC 13 Jon Reid scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a 5-yard run with 23 seconds remaining, as the Warriors (1-2) rallied from a 13-9 deficit in Springfield. Other N.E. Connecticut 38, Buffalo 7 Terry Caulley ran for 234 yards and four touchdowns as the Huskies (3-1) extended the host Bulls' losing streak to 14 games, the longest in the nation. Caulley became the first UConn back to crack the 200-yard mark since Tory Taylor in 1995.

UConn had 613 yards of total offense, aided by Dan Or-lovsky, who completed 15 of 23 attempts for 236 yards. Mount Ida 35, Husson 28 Quarterback P.J.
