Graduating Class Largest in History of School. Commencement week of Richford High School opened Sunday afternoon, June 5, with the baccalaureate sermon preached by Rev. J.

M. Tripp in the Town Hall. Music was furnished by the men's quartette of the Methodist church and Mrs. Jesse R. Conger, and the scripture reading and prayer were by Rev.

G. Leon Wells. The second event of the week, class day exercises, was held in the Town Hall Tuesday evening, June 7, when the following programme was rendered: Music by school orchestra; class history, Robert Cass; class poem, Florence Martin; class will, Bessie Hitchcock and Katherine Westover; class prophecy, Arthur Martin and Lawrence Whitman; selection by orchestra. The annual senior play, "My Lord in Livery," a one-act comedy, was presented with the following cast of characters: Lord Thirlmere, Cedric Combs; Spiggot, the butler, Osmaa Chaffee; Hopkins, a footman, Clair Laden; Sybil Amberly, daughter of Sir George Amberly, Rebecca Carpenter; Laura and Rose, friends of Sybil, Dorothy Thayer and Marian Durkee. The exercises were splendidly received, especially the play, which was one of the best ever staged by a senior class, At the graduating exercises Friday evening, June 10, at eight o'clock, at the Colonial Theater, only two of the members of the class will take part, the programme being as follows: Selection by orchestra; salutatory, Madeline Pomfrey; valedictory, Dorothy Thayer; selection, orchestra; address, Dr.

W. N. Bryant of Ludlow, presentation of diplomas; announcements. Immediately following the graduating exercises the annual alumni business meeting and banquet will take place in the Methodist church parlors. The University of Vermont scholarships are awarded to Dorothy Thayer and Robert Cass.

General high standing: First, Dorothy Thayer; seeond, Bessie Hitchcock and Osman Chaffee; third, Berenice A. Deyette. The class officers are: President, Osman Chaffee; vice-president, Cedric Combs; secretary, Rebecca Carpenter; treasurer, Marian Durkee. Colors, gold and white; motto, "Esse quam vlderl." (To be, rather than to seem). The class roll contains the largest number of pupils (26) yet graduated from the school.

Stanhope of Center street passed the week in Burlington, a guest in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd A. Woodward.

Charles and William Kelley of Lowell, were in town this week visiting their brother, J. F. Kelley, and sister, Mrs. Oscar McGregor, both of whom are on the sick list. Lewis Peabody died quite suddenly of heart disease June 8 at his home on Powell Street.

He was born in Mansonville, July 8, 1863, and is survived by hi3 wife. Funeral service will be held at the house this after-ternoon, and burial will be in the new cemetery. Dr. Frank L. Miner of San Mateo, who was visiting in the home of Mr.

and Mrs. R. Emmet Fay, Intervale avenue, left here Thursday morning for Greenfield, where he will pass a few weeks with his brother, Dr. Mark Miner, and will then return to his home in San Mateo. Baled hay for sale, $28 a ton.

and Mrs. Powers formerly resided in Richford, and have many friends among our older residents. Mrs. James Sanderson of River street met with a serious accideut Sun day afternoon. While out riding with her husband and when near the Wil- lard place on the Berkshire road, the horse's bridle broke and Mr.

Sander son took it off' to make a temporary repair. The horse took advantage of the condition and ran away, and Mrs. Srnderson jumped from the wagoniand sustained a broken right leg, both bones between knee and ankle being broken. She was taken to the near-by house and Dr. Scorield was called, who administered ether and set the broken bones.

Upon recovering from the anesthetic she was taken in the ambu lance to her home on River street. Mrs. Vilas R. Chaplin (Eliza Duf- fey) died June 3 at her home on Troy street after a long illness with cancer of the uterus. Funeral service was held in the home Monday afternoon, Rev.

G. Leon Wells, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating, and bur ial was in the new cemetery. Mrs. Chaplin was born in Bedford, September 27, 186 7, the daughter of Edward Dufley and Mary Kennedy, both natives of Enosburg. For sever-eral years Mr.

and Mrs. Chaplin lived on a farm at East Kichford, which they sold about three years ago and came to this village to live, purchasing the Hardy house on Troy street. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. George Wright and Mrs. Lynn Sisco, both of Richford; and two sons, Lee R.

The body of Harvey C. Cmumings, who died January 21, 1919, while in service in France as a member ol Co. 103d machine gun battalion, arrived here Sunday morning from New York, where it was landed June 2 from a United States transport. The body was accompanied by private John Hines of the regular army, and was taken to the Methodist church, where it reposed until Tuesday afternoon hen a full formal funeral service was held, the pastor, Rev. G.

Leon Wells, officiating, Twenty members of the American Legion in full service uniform attended the fuueral in a body and acted as an escort to the new cemetery, where the body of the dead soldier was placed beside his mother, who died several years ago. Harvey C. Cummings was born in Richford in 1893, and most of his life was passed here. He is survived by his father, John Cumming of Abercon, three sisters, Mrs. Charles Fuller, Mrs.

James Manzer, Mrs Theophile Lacroix, all of Richford; and a brother, Benjamin, who lives with his father at Abercorn. A Delightful Summer Resort. Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Powell have moved into their new bungalow on South Main street, next the Catholic church, where they will be pleased to receive their friends. Mrs.

E. Fay Hopkins returned this week from Allston, where she had been for several months with her daughter, Mrs. Thomas A. Taylor, and is occupying her home on School street. Thursday night while Mrs.

R. M. Buck was returning in her car from St. Albans, with Arthur Cook as driver, her car was run into from the rear by a St. Albans car and somewhat damaged.

The front of the St. Albans car sustained more damage. The body of a world war soldier, Fred McKinney, arrived here from New York Wednesday evening and was taken Thursday to Fairfield for burial. Mr. McKinney was a wagoner and a member of Co.

101st Am.Trn. He died of spinal meningitis in a hospital in France December 20, 1918. H. A. Puffer took a party of four ladies in his auto to Bennington Tuesday to attend the annual meeting of the State Federation of Women's Clubs, as delegates from the Richford Woman's Club.

Greene, Mrs. Gertrude Puffer. The Cadillac auto seized by customs oflleers at East Berkshire April SO with 183 bottles of liquor aboard, was sold at auction here this morning to the owner of the car, Edward Gau-tbier of Holyoke, for 225. Gau-thier was driving the car at the time of seizure, and is now-under indictment for smuggling and infraction of the Volstead Act. -Mrs.

H. Noble Baker of Florida, Cuba, who is visiting in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B.

Kimball of Enosburg Falls, was a visitor in the home of her husband's mother, Mrs. Jasper C. Baker of River Btreet, Thursday. Mrs. Baker will remnin in Vermont until September, and expects Mr.

Baker will Join her in August. He is engaged in railroad construction work in Cuba. Cortis Henry Aiken and Miss Cora Kent Porter, both of this village, were married Wednesday, June 8, at the Baptist parsonage by George Pomfrey. Immediately after the ceremony Mr. and Mrs, Aiken left town on an auto trip, and on their return will make their home in the C.

A. Powell house on South Mala street. Mn. Aiken came to Richford from Rutland two years ago to accept an appaintment as Red Cross district nurse, and during the entervenlng time has greatly endeared herself to all in our community, and especially to those who were 111, by her courtesy, kindness and geniality. AMUSEMENTS.

Don't miss D. W. Griffith's great sensational picture of the South Seas, "The Love Flower," with Richard Barthelmess in the leading male role and Carol Dempster in the leading female role. This picture has the same people who appeared tn "The Idol Dancer," and is pronounced by critics to be even a greater production than that great picture, which was seen at The Colonial April 2d. Decreased Railway Earnings.

The Canadian Pacific Railway report of gross earnings for the 4th week in May shows a startling decrease as compared with the same period in 1020, as follows: 1921 1920 Decrease 4th wk. May, $4,542,000 $5,432,000 $890,000 A Week's Business Failures. As reported by Bradstreet's of May 28, the business failures in the United States for the week ending May 26, and the corresponding weeks in 1919 and 1920 were: 1921317; 1920106; 191989. The failures in New England for the same respective periods were: 30, 11, 9. Failures in the Southern states were 32 per cent of the total.

Newspaper Suspends Publication. Swanton, June 9. The Swanton Courier suspended publicaton to-day. Established 44 years ago, its suspension is caused, said Donald Tubin, editor and manager, because there is not enough support to warrant its continuance.
