They were arrested and committed to tbe lockup until this morning, when, after a hearing, they were sent to prison for ten days each. A Noble Retreat for Independence DAy. In view of the fact that many men have signed the total abstinence pledge at the Murphy meetings, and in order to throw around them as many guards and reliefs as possible, from all and every temptation, tbe Young Men's Christian Association has arranged to provide a suitable entertainment at what is known as the Pennsylvania House, a building recently purchased by tne Association, ana which it is intended to remodel and reconstruct for its exclusive me. An ample lunch and suitable drink will be provided for the occasion. The ladies of the different churches have been appealed to, and with their usual alacrity have gone to work in aid of this purpose.

Woman never lags behind in the furtherance of any proper object. In 1 this case the proposition has been nobly sustained, and the object to be attaint will be rendered successful as much by the zeal with which it is supported by the ladles, as for any special effort which the Association can make. Any citizen who feels that the men who have recently resolved to lead better lives, are deserving of care and generous encouragement, can aid a good cause by sending contributions to the Pennsylvania House during the morning of to moWr Art in Harbisburg The Exhibition at Mi8 Woodward' 8 Seminary In our notice of the soiree recently held at Miss Woodward's seminary, at Second and Locust streets, we adverted to the choice pictures on the wall, specimens of the work done by the pupils, as showing their advancement in the science of drawing and painting. We were permitted last evening to have a close inspection of the numerous pictures, and, after a thorough examination, we can have nothing but praise for the great excellence of the crayonings displayed and the skill shown by the scholars under Miss Sallie Van Horn, the talented teacher of. drawing and painting at Miss Woodward's seminary.

Not only are there scenes from nature and animal life of rare skill, but some of the scholars have sketched portraits of persons in so perfect a manner as to almost defy criticism. Notably among these is the portrait of Thos. Bingham, Esq crayoned by Miss Mollie Bingham from a photograph the portrait of the late George Bergner, proprietor of the Telegraph, crayoned by MissLillie Bergner, and Miss Mamie Allen's crayoned portraits of her mother and brother. All of these are natural and life like, and betoken an earnest endeavor in the artists to succeed. "The Dead a crayoning by Miss Helen Boas, has been pronounced by an artist of high standing to be the chefd'oeuvre of the exhibition, and it is indeed an excellent piece of work.splen dldly done.

'The Maid of the Alps." a sketch by Miss Sallie Franciscus, is remarkable for its beauty and finish, and ia justly praised as a clever specimen. Among the other pictures, an extended notice of which is hardly necessary, since all are excellent and skillfully executed, are "Water Liiies, by Mis Liiie King; "Roses" and "Pansies," water color, by Mies Grettie Black horse and dog heads, by Miss Eloise Buehler; "Flowers" and "Birds," water color, by Miss Kate Calder The Foster Mother," by Miss Irene Black; Lilies of the Valley" and "Morning Glories," painted on silk in water colors, by Mtss Mamie Allen "Madonna," by Miss Lille Black "Winter Scene," by Miss Alice Calder; "Psyche," by Mies Sallie Franciscus "Pharaoh's horses" and "Winter Scene," by Miss Lllie Bergner; "Flowers," water color, Mips Lizzie Shaffer; "Pharaoh's Horses," Miss Helen Boas. It is seldom that so large a number of really excellent pictures are bung on the four walls of any room, and it speak highly for tbe credit of the teacher and principal that such intelligence has been shown and such rapid progress made by tbe pupils. Some show evidences of a skill which properly and assiduously followed up will assuredly lead to greater and more lasting result. The collection will remain on exhibition this evening and to morrow Wed desday) evening, and the opportunity afforded to all to see Hue pictured who have not yet done so.

Miss Woodward has been peculiarly fortunate in her selection of teachers, but in none more so than iu drawing and music, the latter art having been attained to high perfection in the school, aa the delighted audiences at the closing soirees will bear evidence, after having heard the delightful renditions of be. tu liful sonatas by little misses scarcely in their teens. The seminary haa heemw quite an institution iu our ci'y, aul id tamed far and wide as a place of Plank Race. To morrow evening the Harrisburg boat club will have a plank race on the river, which promises to afford considerable amusement. Five members of the club will participate.

each one managing a plank. The course will be the usual one. from the South street rock to the Market street bridge. Their Attendance Recobd. The following items of attendance have been taken from the High School records of this city Of the late graduates.

M'Cord, Meredith and Palm missed no time during the year. Miss Brenizer naif a day, and Miss West missed no time in last two years. The Raid on the Bass. Yester day being the commencement of the bass fishing season, there was a general raid all along the line. From Clark's Ferry to this city, and for some distance below, parties of fishermen were en gaged in capturing fine specimens of bass.

Large ones were caught in the river at the piers of the bridges and in tbe deep water in the vicinity. The train from up the river, which arrived here last night, was crowded with re turning fishermen, who had fine strings or large bass taken during tne day. Some of them had from six to two or three dozens. Several parties had suc ceeded in capturing from twenty five to thirty, one gentleman caught thirty seven below the Cumberland Valley bridge, a number or which weighed from two to over three pounds apiece. ABE THEY WORTHY A Jb LAG OR lower? On no public occasion that we can recall since their consecration have the soldiers' monuments, in the capitol grounds and at the intersection of Ate and Second streets received any special bonor.

The anniversaries of historic days come and pass without a recognition for either of these shafts, the cold granite of the one remaining undecorated by flag or flower, and the pure white marble of tbe other, in its Corinthian elegance and classic beauty, never having been Honored as a historic emblem, no votary being pan triotic enough to decorate it with a gar land or salute it with a gun. Could such honors be paid to these emblems of a people's gratitude to morrow. Superin tendent Patterson, after having done so much to beautify the public grounds. ought to add this last adornment to the Mexican monument, and the surviving comrades of the brave men whom the granite shaft commemorates could well honor that pile also to morrow. Will they? Imposing Upon Farmers It ought to be unnecessary to warn farmers to beware of traveling patent right agents who are constantly "prowling around" for victims.

But it seems that many farmers are as easily tempted as a boy with his first postal currency in his pocket, when he sees a confectionery. and fall a victim to their own greed too often. The farmer who has any sense will never buy an article from a stroll ing agent, when he can get all he re quires from a reliable hardware store, where he knows the merchant and is himself known. At this season the rural districts are full of these patent right agents vending farming lmple ments. In no case should a farmer buy of these men, because no farmer ever dealt with such hucksters without being cheated.

These scamps, in nine cases out of ten, make pilgrimages purposely to plunder unsuspecting farmers, and where they can avoid it never visit the came locality twice in the same season. The safer plan is not to buy of a stranger wnat you can get at a store wnere you are known and know the merchant. The local merchant, for all varieties of supply, is tbe Barest party to traffic with and farmers must confide in him alone. BUSINESS LOCLAJLS. s3u.Help for the weak, nervous, and debilitated.
