Marble playing is all the rage with the boys of our city. Chinas," "white alleys" and "commons" have to take it. On Saturday afternoon we noticed several boys whose pockets were literally loaded with marbles, and who were running a race, the marbles rattling as if to keep time to their movements. An Old Resident Goxe. Mr.

Kipple, aged ninety years, who resided about three miles above Marysville, Perry county, died on Thursday evening last, and was burled on Saturday in 7 the place whero he resided, near Cove Station. On Saturday evening Joseph Jackson was arrested on a charge of drunkenness, by one of the members of the police force. He wore the uniform of a United States soldier, and is said to be a deserter from Carlisle Barracks. When the po liceman took hold of Joseph he became quite demonstrative and handled a knife in a very loose manner, ana Beemed anxious to run the policeman through with it, but he was escorted to Fort Simmons, where he will have an opportunity to meditate on the vicissitudes of life.

Jacob Tausig, a pawnbroker, was charged on Saturday by Dr. M'Intyre with swindling, in that he had sold him (the Dr.) a ring which he represented as fold, but turned out to be bogus. The )octor said he had purchased the ring for presentation to a third party, and paid twenty dollars for it. It seems that the ring was left several months since at Tansig's shop in security of a loan of thirty dollars. It is alleged that Mr.

Tausig sent it to Philadelphia to have, it tested, and was informed that it was spurious. He then brought suit against the party who pledged it to him, but the evidence proving that it was not represented as gold, he was discharged. A hearing was waived by Mr. Tausig, and he entered bail for his appearance at court. The new building of Mr.

The Lancaster Inquirer says On last Sunday morning a coroner's jury was summoned by C.

D. Martin, Deputy Coroner, who, in connection with Dr. W. Binkley, viewed a body, apparently of a young mah, found along the river shore below Turkey Hill, Kendig's Bottom, on last Saturday afternoon, by two. boys from Washington, this county.

The young man had.apparent ly been about seventeen or eighteen years of age, light hair, full set of teeth, the incisors some distance apart, little or no clothing on his person, white muslin shirt, cassimere coat (the in his possession a part of this), a pair of new kip boots, newly heeltapped, new blue woolen socks tipped with white. The body must have been in the river for some length of time, as mortification had taken place in the lower part of the abdomen. The bowels were protruded and decomposition had commenced. There was a large opening under the left arm exposing the ribs. The lungs were in a state of decomposition.

The body was interred near that place and the grave marked, to inform the friends of deceased, if any should be found, where to find the body. Tho coroner's jury returned a verdict of death by drowning. The roofo of several houses were considerably damaged among the number one of Mr. Forney's, corner of North street and Pennsylvania avenue. Telegraph wires were blown down, and communication, by that means, with other places was suspended for some hours. The rain of yesterday morning was of the most searching and drenching kind. Unbrellas stood no chance in the high wind and were entirely useless.

Very few people ventured out of their houses unless compelled to do so by business of importance, and the attendance at the various churches was rather slim. Late in the afternoon the storm abated, and in the evening there was a better attendance at the churches. During the night, however, there was a drizzling rain, which continued a greater part of to day. Those who thought the equinoctial storm was over a week or two ago have concluded that they were considerably mistaken In their calculations. It is well lor those who are compelled to move that the storm came when it did, there being a prospect for clear weather on moving day," Tho storm does not usually last more than two or three days, and it is to be hoped there will bo no exception to the general rule at this time.

The Elk Democrat says Another sad accident occurred on Tuesday last, this time at Mill Creek, by which an interesting little daughter of John Alt, aged three years, came to its death. It appears that at about four o'clock on the afternoon in question the mother of the little sufferer left the child alone in the house and proceeded to the mill, a short distance away, where the husband was at work. After a lapse of about fifteen minutesshe returned to the where she found her little darling lying upon the floor burned to a crisp, yet still alive. Dr. J.

Bordwell, of this place, was immeaiaieiy summoned, ana ren dered all the assistance within his power. but human skill availed nothing, as it lived but a few hours, when it was re lieved from all bodily The exact cause of the accident is not known, but it is supposed that while playing witn tne nre in tne stove its clothing became ignited, and in the absence of its mother was thus shockingly burned. The Congress of the Argentine Confederation, of South America, has passed an act establishing a iN atlonai Astronomical Observatory, and Dr. B. A. Gould, the distinguished astronomer, ot Cambridge, has been commissioned to' organize it and become its di rector lor a time, and he has asked Miles Rock, lormeriy or this city, to become one of his assistants, of which there will be four. Mr.

R. has accepted, and the party expect to sail the coming June for Buenos Ayres. The Observatory has been established chiefly through the influence of President Sarmiento, who is an accomplished scholar in fact the leading man in such matters in South America; When he was the Argentine minister to this country, some time ago, he visited Lancaster and was the guest of Mr. Stevens, Judge Hay's, Mr. Wickersham, and other distinguished citizens.

The first work to be done will be making a catalogue of the stars of the Southern heavens. This will take about three years, but the observatory is established for permanence. It will be located at Cordova, a city somewhat larger than Lancaster, and situated in a narrow and beautiful valley on the First River (Rio Primero). The observatory will be built on abl uft overlooking the city, river and valley. It is 207 miles northwest from Rosario, a seaport on the Parana river, with which it is connected by the only railroad in mat part ot tne world, it is the seat of the oldest university in the Western World, having been founded by the Jesuits many years before the wilds of Lancaster county echoed to the axe of the first settler.

The climate is reputed to be singularly healthy. The people in the city are Spanish Americans, in the country (Pampas) Indians and Creoles. Lancaster Express. Mr. Miles Rock, above referred" to, will be remembered by his many friends in this city.

During the late war of the rebellion he was a clerk for some time under the present Adjutant General of the htate. Since then he has graduated with high honors at the Lehigh University, Bethlehem, and been appointed as an Assistant Professor of the institution, besides filling the position of mining engineer in one of the most extensive lead mines ot the Lehigh re gion. During the late observations and cal culations made upon the eclipse of the sun last season, his abilities and skill attracted the attention of the distinguished astronomer above named, Prof. Gould, and tho result is his appointment as assistant astronomer in the national observatory about to be established at Uordova. Mr.

llock will probably remain there for several years, and we predict for him, if life is spared, a career of increasing usefulness and honors. His friends congratulate him, and re joice in his early successes. It begins the first year with a smaller dividend than is ordinarily allowed on the percentage plan and increasing annually, in proportion to the age of the insured, and the number of years the policy has been in force after a few years surpasses the largest dividend ever declared by any company on that plan.

This plan will prove of greater benefit to the insured and it is only by the financial strength already attained that the American are able to adopt this system. We cordially commend the company and its agent, J. D. Boas, to our citizens. W.

Nassau St. New YoRKt February 15th, 1870. The remarkable success which attended bur negotiation of the Loans of the PA CIFC RAILROAD COMPANY and the WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD COMPANY, and the popularity and credit which these Loans have maintained in the markets, both In this country and Europe, have shown that the First Mortgage Bonds of wisely located and honorably managed Railroads are promptly recognised and readily taken as the most suitable, safe and advantageous form of Investment, yielding a more liberal income than can hereafter be derived from Government Bonds, and available to take their place." Assured that, in the selection and negotiation of superior Railroad Loans, we are meeting a great public want, and rendering a valuable serviceboth to the holders of Capital and to those great National works of, internal improvement whose intrinsic merit and substantial character entitle them to the use of Capital and the confidence of investors we now offer with special confidence and satisfaction the FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS OF THE Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, connecting the Atlantic i coast and the magnificent harbors of the Chesapeake Bay with the Ohio River at a point of reliable navigation, and thus, with the entire Railroad system and water transportation of the great West and Southwest, forms tbe additional East and West Trunk Use, imperatively demanded, for the accommodation of the immense and rapidly growing transportation between the Atlantis seaboard and Europe on the one hand, and the great producing regions of the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys on the other. 1 importance of this Road as a new outlet from (be Went to the sea magnifies It into one of national consequence, and Insures to it an extensive through traffic from the day of its completion while, in the development of the extensive agricultural and mineral resources of Virginia and West Virginia, It possesses, along Its own line, the elements of a large and profitable local buslnets.

Thus the great Interests, bath general and local, which demand the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad to the Ohio River, afford the surest guarantee of its success and value, and render It the most Important and sub stantlal Railroad enterprise now In pro irress In this country. 1 Its superiority as an East and West route, and the promise of an immense and profitable trade awaiting its completion, have drawn to It the attention and co operation of prominent Capitalists and Railroad men of this city of sound judgment and known integrity, whose connection with It, I together with that of eminent citizens and bust ness men of Virginia and West Virginia, snres an energetic, honorable and sue eessfnl management. The Road Is completed and in operation from Richmond to the celebrated White Sulphur Springs of West Virginia, 227 miles, and there remain but 900 miles (now partially constructed) to be completed, to carry it to the proposed ter minus on the Ohio river, at or near the mouth of the JEtlg Sandy river, 160 miles above Cincinnati, and 360 miles below Pittsburg. Lines are now projected or in progress through Ohio and Kentucky to this point, which will eon nect the Chesapeake and Ohio with (he entire Rail road aystems of the West aud South went, and with the Paelfle Railroad. Its valuable franchises and superior advantages will place the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company among the richest and most powerful and trustworthy corporations of the country; and there exists a present value, In com pleted road and work done, equal to the entire amonnt of the mortgage.

The details of the Loan have boon arranged with special reference to the wants of all classes of investors, and combine the various features of convenience, safety and protection against loss or fraud. The Bonds are in denominations of 81,000, 8500 and eUOO. They will be Issued as Coupon Bonds, payable to bearer, and may be held in that form or The Bond may be in the name of the owner, with the coupons remaining payable to bearer attaohed, the principal being then transferable only on the books of the Company, unless reassigned to bearer or The coupons may be detached and cancelled, the Bond made a permanent Registered Bond, transferable only on the books of the Company, and the Interest made payable only to the regis tered owner or his attorney. The three classes will be known respectively as lN "Coupon Bonds payable to Bear or." 2d. "Reeisterod Bonds with Con pone attacked." 3d.

'ReffiMtered Bonds wills Coupons detacltcd," and should be so designated by Correspondents in specifying the class of Bonds desired. They have thirty years to ron from January 16, 1870, with Interest at six per cent, per annum from November Principal and inter eat iiavable In cold In (lie city of New York. The Interest la payable In May and November, that It may take the place of that of the earlier Issues of Five Twenties, and suit the convenience of our friends who already hold Central and Western Pacific lionds, with Interest payable in January and July, and who may desire, In making additional Investments, to have their interest receivable at different seasons of the year. The Loan is secured by a mortgage upon the entire Line of Road from Richmond to the Ohio River, with the equipment and all other property and appurtenances connected therewith. A Sinking Fund of 100,000 per annum is pro vided for the redemption of the Bonds, to take effect one year after the completion of the Road.

Tho mortgage is for 16,000,000, of whloh 000 will be reserved and held In trust Tor the redemption of outstanding Bonds of the Virginia Central Railroad Company, now merged In the Chesapeake and Ohio. or the remaining a sufficient amount will be sold to complete tbe road to the Ohio river, perfect and Improve the portion now In operation, and thoroughly equip tbe whole for a Urge and active tratltc. The present price Is 90 and a crued Interest. A Loan so amply secured, so irelully guarded and so certain hereafter to command a prominent rlaie amonir the favorite securities In the mar kets, both of this country and Europe, will be at once appreciated ana quirmy imunwi.
