The next term of Common Pleas Court will begin on January 10, 1879. Thermometer 24 above zero at 8 o'clock this morning. "Weather pleasant. Tramps at West Chester must break stone. Here they are sent to jail because TTA h4VA Til" wnrlr house.

News: What a pleasure it is to be continually told of our faults by those humbugs whose virtues have never yet been detected. An important meeting of John Fi Hart ranft Post, No. 58, G. A. to night.

All comrades are expected to be present at half past seven. The members and friends of All Workers' chapel paid their pastor, Rev. G. W. Seilhamer, a valuable donation visit a few evenings ago.

Four inebriates were in the lockup last night. One of them, a woman, was sent to jail for ten days, she having been arrested repeatedly. The Ways and Cleans Committee of the Toung Men's Republican Club are requested to meet at the club room this evening at 750 sharp. Business of importance to each member of the committee will be transacted. Two bad Small Boys were arrested last evening for disorderly conduct and discharged with a reprimand.

The police have instructions to arrest all disorderly boys on the streets, as complaint has been made of their actions. Freight crews on the Middle Division. Pennsvlvania railroad, report Tuesday and Wednesday nishts as the coldest in their experience. The wind blew at a furious gale on Tuesday night, but not an accident occurred traceable to the cold. The canal, from Hcrr street to the lock, was covered with boys and girls this morn ing, enjoying the pleasures of skating.

There were several girls on the ice who were very graceful on the steel runners, excelling in speed the stronger boys of the crowd. Newark Call: When a young man is escorting his girl on one arm and her mamma on the other it is remarkable how the vigor will go out of the arm hooked to the mamma and go into the arm hooked to the girl. This is one of the curious things in physiology which our scientists ought to wrestle with. Buy a diary you may only use it for a few days to fill in your good New Year's resolutions, but that doesn't matter. Buy one all the same.

It's the proper thing to do. Besides, along about 4th of July you look at the diary with astonishment. It's worth something to be astonished now a days. While passing Cowden street, above North, this morning, we saw a man shaking up a lot of hay in a stable while he smoked a pipe, and we at once concluded that that was the way in which incendiary fires occur. If that man's stable had burned down to day he would have insisted that it was the act of anncendiary.

Hundreds of boys were coasting down the streets running from Ridge avenue to Pennsylvania avenue this morning. From Forster to Broad almost every street was occupied by crowds of jolly boys with their sleds, some of whom ran down the steep hill within a few yards of Pennsylvania avenue, dashing across Cowden street with the velocity of an arrow. The sidewalks on the south sido of all streets running east and west are in a hor rioie condition, tne ice rendering it very dangerous for pedestrians. In many of the narrow streets, where there are no sewers to carry off the water from dwelling, houses, the overflow of gutters and sidewalks has accumulated the ice in such a manner as to render some of these streets almost impassable. Remembering their Teacher.

On Christmas day Mr. DifFenbach's class, consisting of young gentlemen attending the Sabbath school of the Fourth Street Lutheran church, proceeded to his residence on North Second street, near Pine, and presented him with a very large and fine group picture of themselves, including one of their deceased classmates, Harry G. Sample. The picture is encased in a handsome frame. Geo.

W. Bennett, delivered a very fine presentation speech. The picture and frame was furnished by Burnite, photographer, Third street. Tho Friendship Fair. The pleasant fair now being held by the Friendship lire company in Brant's Hall is the centre of attraction, and visited by large crowds of people.

A nicer variety of useful and ornamental articles we have never seen at a fair, and courteous treatment is the rule to all who visit it. Last night the following articles were chanced off: Set of cut glass tumblers, won by Mis. Edwards; chamber set by Miss Jennie Tawney; large turkey by Turner Koons; Miss Clara Edward3, glassware; wall bracket by Emma Blessing; immenso twist loaf byMrs. Brown. A splendid tobacco pouch, contributed by an old volunteer fireman of "Philadelphia, will be chanced off to morrow night.

Dancing will begin this evening, and the VOunsr folks (and the old ones, tool can en joy themselves in the terpsichorcan festivities to their heart's content. Eveky one who has used it pronounces T)r. Brill's Hiirw SWi nn t.liA Twtst remulir known for the complaints of early childhood. It contains no opiates. Reminiscences of Harriaburg.

The third number of the series of reminiscences of Ilarrisburg appear on our. third page this evening, delayed in its publication by the great press of advertising during the holidays. Several persons, whose memory stretches back to the period covered by these sketches, allege that the writer has inadvertently fallen into mistakes, particularly in that of the 10th inst. The writer of the reminiscences is ready to be convinced of any error on his part, if the proof adduced is strong enough to do it, and would therefore be glad to meet any of his friends who desire to call on him to correct history and keep the record riht. He is ready to establish the correctness in his judgment, of all that he has written and, therefore, any who differ with him might be instructed or afford instruction by making the call we suggest.

It must always be remembered that the reminiscences are drafts on memory, the revival of recollections of scenes and proceedings in which the writer bore a personal part or had a personal observation. Judge not a man by what he has on him, but what he has in him, and especially what he takes for his cough or cold if his judgment is good, he will use Dr. Haas' Expectorant. 23 cents a bottle. Prospects for Ice.

Harrisburg ice dealers are now engaged in reaping the winter harvest. We are informed that on the ponds in 'this vicinity ice ten inches thick was cut yesterday afternoon and this morning, and a good quantity stowed away for use. The prospects are! very good for a large stock on hand next summer, to be sold at low prices. Masonic. At a meeting held by Chosen Friends Lodge, No.

Returned to the Lunatic Asylum. Detective Jacob Johnson, of Easton, yesterday afternoon returned Laros, the prisoner, to his old quarters in the insane asylum at this city. Laro, an account of whose escape was given in the Telegraph at the time of its occurrence, was found at Memphis, and in relating his wanderings to Detective Johnson, said that he had gone into the yellow fever district in hopes that he would be stricken with the pestilence. He expressed a strong desire to be hanged, and was much discumfited on being told that he was to be returned to the asylum. He was very indignant at the detective when the latter intimated that he was insane.

It is not known whether legal proceedings will be instituted to again place him in Easton jail tor a resentence of hanging. JIIKETING OF THE HIGHWAY COM3IIT The Residents of Allison's Hilt and Eleventh Street State Their Grievances. The Committee on Highways were waited on last evening in the Select Council chamber by a delegation of residents and property owners of Eleventh street and Allison's hill, relative to the condition of Eleventh street below Market. They represent a large class of our citizens and have waited for some time to have that important thoroughfare put in good condition. They claim that large sums of money have been spent in the upper part of the city where the population is comparatively light, while the people on and near Eleventh street have beeu almost entirely neglected.

During the last freshet, people residing on that street were obliged to use boats in order to get to their dwellings. What they ask for is that this street be graded and piked, so that pavements can be laid and the street be made safe and in good condition for people from Allison's hill, Baldwin and below the city generally, thus avoiding the fatal accidents which have occurred in crossing the railroad on Paxton and Second street. A CHRISTIAN WORK. An Invitation to United Christian Effort for a Work of Grace. The ministers of various denominations in Baltimore invite the ministers and churches of our country to unite, in the month of January next, following up the Week of Prayer, in special efforts for a revival of God's work throughout the land.

The Baltimore ministers in their appeal say: "The observance of this week has been attended with great blessings in the past; but, as is well known, in many cases the cheering expectations excited have failed to be realized.
