It is hoped that every member will attend, 'as business of the utmost importance will be on hand. Dosavan, the York county murderer, will positively be hung on next Tuesday. Mayor's Cocrt. There were six vagrants and one inebriated individual before the Mayor this morning, who were disposed of in the usual manner.

April 1st is fast approaching, and deeds, leases and all the various legal blanks will be in great demand. All persons wanting anything of this kind will find a full assortment at. Bergner's book store. All the various United States Revenue stamps used on such papers can be bad at the same place. Burglars Arrested.

For some time the town of Sunburv. and the immediate vi cinity, have been infested with a cans of burglars who defied detection. A detective was employed, who became acquainted with some of them, and was received as a "hale fellow well met." After learning their plans and becAminer aeauainted with their opera tions, he arrested them on last Sunday morn ing, and lodged them in the prison at Sun bury, for trial. Officers Elected. The following officers were elected by Dauphin Lodge, No.

ICO, I. O. O. last evening: Noble Grand Thos. P.

Montgomery. Vice Grand William Hippie. Secretary George F. Weaver. Assistant Secretary John S.

Utz. Financial Secretary Levi Wolfinger. Treasurer Robert A. Trustees B. G.

Teupser. Arrest of a Tuief. Yesterday morning a dispatch was received by the Mayor from Milesburg, Centre county, requesting the police to be on the look out for a female thief who, it was supposed, would arrive in this city on the noon train. Officer Cline was at the depot when the train arrived, and" passing through the cars, found a woman answering the description telegraphed to the Mayor. He immediately arrested the woman, who gave her name as Anna Jones, and acknowledged that she had robbed a Mrs.

Fritz, of Milesburg. She bad in her possession a larore carnet sack, which beinz opened, was found to contain a number of silk and other valuable dresses, shawls, She was com. mitted to prison to await the action of the au thorities of Centre county. Fire. About half past nine o'clock this morning an alarm was given by the fire bells ot mo city.

soon atter tne auierent tire companies were on their way to the fire. Following the crowd we eoon ascertained that the alarm was caused by the burning of a portion of the floor and a featherbed, in the backbuuding ot the residence ot Mrs. ox, corner of Second street and Karbara alley. The Dine of the kitchen stove, which passes through the floor of the room, becoming very much heated, set fire to the floor, and the flames were soon communicated to the feather bed in the room, causing considerable smoke. Our firemen were promptly on the spot, and soon extinguished the flames.

From what we saw of the house we should think it was more damaged by water than fire. Had this fire occurred atmcht wo would have been com pelled to chronicle a large conflagration. Our citizens cannot be too careful in examining their pipe holes. We have been presented with a pocket knife of as beautiful workmanship and finish as any we ever saw: the product ot a new cutlery manufactory located at the town of Beaver Falls, Beaver county, Pennsylvania. It is a source of pride to find that in our good old State we have the enterprise to take hold of this branch ot industry, and the patience to develop it fully.

The works to which we now refer belong to the Harmony Society of Economy, better known as the Economies," and their quiet, unobtrusive determination forms the surest guaranty that the cutlery works from whib this beautiful work' comes may be considered, one of the permanent and successful enterprises of our State. It is well known that, the vast wealth of the Economites is a sure safety against one description of danger which all new ventures usually have to meet and the quality of their products give all the assurance possible that the skill and the capital are, in this instance, happily combined. To Senator of Beaver county, we are indebted both for the present and the particulars of this important manufactory, and we heartily join him in the enthusiastic hope which he entertains for the complete success of the Beaver Falls cutlery establishment. Lower End Affairs. We glean the fol lowing items in regard to matters occurring in the lower end of the county from the Dauphin Journal Fire.

On Tuesday noon, a small frame building attached to the engine house of Messrs. Raymond Campbell, caught fire, and, but for its timely discovery, we would no doubt be compelled to chronicle a very disastrous conflagration. New School House. We understand that the board of directors intend erecting a large brick school house, near the market house, in the Middle Ward. This ward never had a school house, and from the amount of tax paid by its citizens, we think it is justly entitled to one.

Rev. Beck, of Newville, will take charge ot the Uethel Congregation ot this place, next week. His opening sermon will be delivered on Sabbath week. Town Council. The town council met in their chamber on Monday evening.

The three new councilmen Mr. Caleb Roe, from the North Ward, Mr. Samuel Landis, from the Middle Ward, and Mr. Joseph Steward, from the South Ward, having been sworn in, the council proceeded to elect its officers for the ensuing year, with the following result President Mr. John Monaghan.

Treasurer Cant. John K. Shott. Town Clerk Mr. W.

S. Fortney. Supervisor Mr. Jacob Brandt. The council orderd Union street to be cleaned, "dressed and put in good condition, with crossings at the market house, l'eters and Zearimra stores, and at Smith's hall All other improvements necessary mads at the nroner time.

will be The flood in the Susquehanna, last week, did on immense amount ot damage. Uur up river friends, however, were the heaviest losers in the timber line. A vast amount of logs passed this place, and the islands in the Susnnehanna are literally covered with them. A large amount of logs are also lying in clover and wheat fields above Highspire. The estate of G.

W. Stahl. at Marietta, lost heavi ly in cord word and lumber. We believe our lumber dnnlnrn and sawvers escaped Without any serious loss. The river is now falling last, and will soon be in good rafting order.

A. Boyd Hamilton and Richard Hogeland were qualified as members from the Third and First wards respectively. A. Hamilton was elected President, and Ovid F. Johnson clerk.

committee was appointed to inform the Common Council that this branch was organized. The Select Council then proceeded to the Common Council chamber to be present at the counting of the votes cast for city After returning to their chamber Council adjourned. Common Council. Common Council met in their chamber this morning at ten o'clock. The election returns were read and the new members sworn in by the Mayor.

Mr. Jno. H. Zeigler was elected President and John T. Wilson, Clerk.

Select and Common Councils then met in convention in the Common Council chamber, and counted the votes cast for City Treasurer and City Auditor. Mr. Geo. F. Weaver appeared and was sworn in as City Treasurer Mr.

P. McNiff being the only one of the City Auditors present, was duly sworn in, after which the Select Council retired to their chamber. Mr. Child offered an ordinance repealing an ordinance creating the office of Street Commissioner, and reviving the ordinance of May, 18G3 (which appointed two supervisors), which was passed by a vote of 8 for and against. A resolution was offered authorizing the Presidents of the Select and Common Councils to approve the bond of the City Treasurer elect.

After which Council adjourned. Gouon's Lecture. We never saw the court house so completely crowded as on last evening. Every nook and corner was filled, and there was scarcely standing room left for the speaker, who was the inimitable John B. Gough.

The sale of tickets was immense everybody, almost, desiring to hear the famous lecturer. At eight o'clock John J. Rebman, introduced Mr. Gongh to the audience, and that gentleman at once proceeded tovdeliver his address on Peculiar People." Not only was the subject a peculiar one, but the lecture was as peculiar as the peculiar talents of the peculiar speaker could render it. The varieties of peculiar characters described by Mr.

Gough were so numer ous that a column ot our paper could not contain the slightest reference to each of them. There was not one person in the vast audience who would, after hearing the lecture, have been unwilling to pay the price of a ticket for another opportunity to listen to the popular speaker, ihe probts ot the evening (after deducting the large figure paid for the lecture and the incidental expenses) must have netted a handsome sum to be devoted to the noble object for which the entertainment was given. We cannot close our notice of this lecture without referring to the fact that our citizens are indebted to Mr. Rebman for the several popular lectures that have been delivered here for benevolent objects, and upon each occa sion the lecturers have been ereedet by crowded houses. While nearly all other at tempts to render this description of entertainments profitable have failed to a greater or less extent, his have been highly renumera live.

The secret of Mr. Rebman' success is that he secures lecturers of the first class, and although very high figures have to be paid the speakers, the profits of the.entertainments have in all cases netted large amounts for the treasuries it was desired to replenish. Thanks to Mr. Rebman for his successful efforts to entertain our people and the at same time benefit the great cause of Christianity. COHEN. AMERICAN WALTUAM WATCH S. The true value of Machinery applied to Watchmaking is not that by iU use watches are made rapidly, but that they aro made oorreotly. Very few people know why a Waltham Watch should bo superior to any other. In the first place, at Waltham the Watch is regarded as only a machine, to be constructed like any other mechanical principles.

If the watches are good, it is because the machinery ia good. Of course there must be no defeot in the principle or plan of the governmentno mistake in the sizes or shapes of the pieces of which it is composed nothing wanting in their properties, and no error in their positions. These points once thoroughly settled, it rests wholly with the machinery, constructed with infinite diversity of form and function expressly for the purpose, to produce the finished pieces. By means of multiplying gauges and mioroscopes, tests and inspection for the detection of wear in the cutting tools, and for faults and flaws in steel or stone are made to accompany the work in overy stage from beginning to end. As a nocossary rosult, the watoh goes together a perfect machine.

Every part is found to lit properly in its place. Every pin may be pushed till it pinches, and every screw turned home. Instead of a sluggish and feeble action, the balance even under the pressure of the lightest mainspring vibrates with a wide and free motion, and the beat bos the clear ringing sound always characteristic of the Waltham Watch. The machine is a timekeeper from the start. This system of watchmaking is unknown in foreign countries, and is entirely original with the Waltham Company.
