Avina announced Tuesday he was stepping down, saying he thought it was time for a change for himself and the university's basketball program. Portland, a member of the West Coast Athletic Conference, finished the season with a 14-14 record. Avina overall record with the Pilots wa.s 222 23. Joe Ktzel, the university'i atheltic director who hired Avina as basketball coach in 1970, said the university would begin looking for a replacement immediately.

Avina said he decided not to exercise an option year on contract he signed with the university last spring. In 1979 Avina was an assistant to Bobby Knight in the World University Games and in 1W4 he worked with Knight in conducting tryout camps to pick the U.S. Olympic team. Avina, a graduate of San Jose State University, coached at the junior and senior high school levels before becoming a junior college coach at College of San Mateo in California in I2.
