A stated meeting of the City Council will be held on Saturday evening. Read Eusminger Adams' advertisement of a large sale of household goods, to take place in the lower market house, on Saturday afternoon. Ice. Last night was uncomfortably cool, and early this morning there was ice visible on the water in the gutters about town. This was the first ice of the season.

TnE Lewistown Gazette says Mr. Black and some other officers of the Pennsylvania Railroad, last week made an 'examination of the roadbed from Reedsville to Milroy, with a view, it is hoped, of finishing that portion. Sadden Death. A man named M'Elwee, a resident of the lower end of Huntingdon county, was thrown from his horse a few days ago, near Rough and Ready Furnace, and died almost instantly from the injuries received.

The Secretary of Harrisburg Lodge No. 68, I. 0. 0. notifies the members who intend to participate in the excursion to Ncw ville, to meet at their Hall on Walnut street, nt half past seven o'clock on Saturday morning.

Rev. E. S. Johnston, pastor of the Second Lutheran Church of this city, having accepted a call to Emmcttsburg, will preach his farewell sermon in the church, on Forstcr street, next Sunday morning, at half past ten o'clock We notice by tho report of the proceedings of the Select Council of Erie, that that tody has decided in favor of purchasing the Citizen Fire Company's hand engine, of this city, at one thousand dollors. There seems to be no doubt that the Ltig Threes will be enabled to ship their "Machine" at an early day.

Accident. On Monday night last, a wheel of the local freight train on the Hol lidaysburg branch railroad, while going west, broko in the neighborhood of Rail's Mills, and James Manealis, abrakesman, was almost instantly killed. Deceased resided in Al toona, ajd leaves a wife and three small children. Mayor's Court. There was but a slim court this morning.

Stephen White, lodger, and Richard Budu, drunk, were the only parties arraigned. Yesterday afternoon Margaret Ilatchinson, a worthless, drunken vagrant, was committed to the lock up, but became so noisy in the evening that the Mayor was compelled to send her to prison. When sober, Margaret will probably be ordered to leave tho city. TnR boys of our city appropriately celebrated Hallow E'en. Cabbage heads were in demand and many doors suffered from tho heavy thumps to which they were subjected.

Windows were well corned, and not a few panes of glass were broken. This morning a lady appeared before Mayor Edwards, and entered complaintagainst a number of boys, charging them with damaging a door considerably. The names of thV lads are in the hands of the Mayor, who will give the case his attention. We are infomed that to night the police will keep an eye on the boys around town, and any who engage in throwing cabbage pr corn may expect to find quarters in Fort Callender. Boys look out! The Little Wanderers from the Howard Mission, New York, attracted largo audience to the court house, Inst night.

Six little girls were present and sung a number of beautiful songs, such as they are accustomed to sing daily at the Mission house. Rev. B. T. Phillips, who had them in charge, delivered an address, explanatory of the work of the institution.

A very liberal collection was taken up. Thisunorning the Little Wanderers again appeared at the court house, to and roceivo donations of clothing, edibles, to bo forwarded to the Mission. Our citizens were quite liberal in their contributions, making glad the hearts of the little ones as well as tho Rev. gentleman having th'em under hie care. The Death of Good, The Media Republican gives the following particulars of tho death of Mr.

Jacob Good, of this occurred near that place on Saturday last "lie was working on a scaffolding which rested upon a plauk about 12 feet long, there being 8 loot between the trussels, and while lifting a piece of lumber, the extra weight caused this plank in the centre of which he was standing to DreaK, ana no was precipitated a distance of 00 feet. A correspondent of one of our agricultural exchango papers says "In my ramble in various portions of this and adjoining counties, I have been very par lar in making observations with reference productiveness of those vines that have totne (iown wnen compared, with those Zt ben laid down during the that have no. ik an invariable rule winter, and I havu I0U Ucr whftt WM the that tJsose vines, no fe detachsd variety ot grape, which from (heir supporters in taB down and covered with a few 1 soil, or with leave, until the JJJ" had passed in the spring, yielded gu rP of grapes, while those that had not down during winter yielded but little fr. and in many instances, none at all; when such vines did bear, the grapes were almost several days later in maturing, and were also of an inferior quality.

Killed. A man was killed last evening, at Case's rolling mill, at Columbia, by an embankment falling on hi m. Fire. A small building opposite the depot, and next to Eby Kunkel was slightly damaged by fire, about daylight this morning. The loss is but Troops Moving.

Four hundred and seventy cavalrymen, from Carlisle Barracks, passed through this city yesterday, en route for Texas, via Baltimore. Accident. On Mondayof last week, while threshing at Mrs. Beshoar's, near Perrysville, Juniata countv. a vounz man named Simon A.

Plank, was daneerouslv injured. While the machine was in motion he attempted to fix something about the machinery, when his clothes caught, and drawing him in, cutting one of his limbs ho badly that he will be a cripple for life. Another warning to others. Attention is directed to the advertisement of Madamoiselle Keogh, who has lately rebuilt and enlarged her fashionable' Millinery establishment at Philadelphia. This is now one of the most extensive emporiums of the kind in the country, having numerous correspondents in Paris, through whom the latest European styles are being constantly forwarded.

Sad and Fatal Accident. About one o'clock this afternoon Mr. William Ferns ler, of the Sixth ward, fell into a cellar at Second street, above and broke his neck. An inquest was held this afternoon by Alderman George B. Cole, and a verdict of "accidental death" rendered.

Deceased was about seventy years of age, and leaves a widow and several children to mourn his loss. Sale op the Brady House. We understood, to day, that Mr. John Brady, the projector and proprietor of the Brady House, one of the largest, most popular and eligibly located hotels in this city, sold the establishment to Mr. David II.

Hutchinson, for forty thousand dollars. Mr. Hutchinson has already ga'med a reputation as a hotel proprietor, which has made him known extensively throughout this and the adjoining States. He has the ability to add still further to the popularity of the Brady House, and we predict for him (as we shall pray for him) a success in his new location equal, if not greater, than any he has heretofore gained. TnE chain gang is an institution at Indianapolis.

La Fayette Courier. For once the Courier man is light. The chain gang is an institution and one which could not well be dispensed with. Besides enabling impecunious individuals to pay their fines by working them out, it is a great advantage to have the city cleaned up occasionally without going to great expense. Indianapolis Gazette.

If Harrisburg had a similar "institution" hundreds of drunken fellows who are discharged because they have no money, would have an opportunity to pay their fines. They could do work on the street, for which money has to bo rfaid out of the city treasury. We believe, too, that had we an institution known as the chain gang, there would be less drunkenness in our midst. It would prove a terror to many who now frequent the lock up, but never have the stamps to pay fines. A Fiendish Act by a Devil Incarnate.

The barn of Wm. J. Goshorn, of Tell town ship, this county, was utterly consumed, with all its contents, on the morning of the 3d by being set fire to by a desperado named Joseph Matthews. Matthews, who resides in Blacklog Valley, approached the premises of Mr. Goshorn on the morning aforesaid, making demands of Mr.

Goshorn which he refused to concede: whereupon Matthews entered the barn and deliberately set fire to the hay; all the while holding Goshorn at bay from extinguishing the flame, with rifle and pistols with which he was armed, until the fire had full sway. He then made for Shade Mountain, across the fields of Mr. Goshorn, shooting and kill ing three of his horses to complete his fiendish deed. Matthews is still at large. One hundred dollars are offered for his arrest.

The barn was a new one, yet unfinished. No insurance. Shirleysburg Herald. i Lebanon Items From Yesterday'1 Cour ier. Daniel Slroh, Postmaster at Ann ville, died on Sunday evening.

Mr. Stroh was at one time Register of our countv. William Behny has been appointed Postmaster at Myerstown in place of Daniel H. Coover, removed. Mr.

Coover was a faithful officer and a good man, and had too much principle to support "my policy." The Health of Lebanon. The health of Lebanon is as good at this time as it ever was. The excitement that was occasioned by seven or eight sudden deaths, a couple of weeks ago, has entirely subsided, ana is almost forgotten. Disgraceful. The late Postmaster at Ann ville, who died on Sunday night, had scarcely breathed his last, before hungry Copperheads were running about with petitions for signatures asking for tho place.

There is a decency about these things which ravenous office hunters should not do permitted to outrage with impunity. We never remember to have seen any class of men so hotly in pursuit of office as the Copperheads are at this time. Their whole souls seem to be engrossed in the ignoble pursuit. Getting Marriyqe Licenses. In Indiana, Ohio, and other Western States it is necessary to obtain a license before any one can be married.

Here, in Pennsylvania, our young men are not compelled to go through this trying ordeal, but as some of them may happen to go West, to seek wives as well as fortunes, we publish, tor their benefit, the following article on the subject ot Getting Marriage licenses, clipped trom an Indian apolis paper "I lie transition trom boyhood to youth is one of the most trying and vexatious times to which man is subject. When the boy, for the first time, assumes the modern toga virilis, the long tailed coat, shame, fear, joy and ad miration ot himself, reign alternately in his breast and continually fight for supremacy until he has worn the coat long enough to be come accustomed to it. ibis is, undoubtedly, the real "spooney" part of man's life, but many have a recurrence of trouble, dis ease, mania, or whatever it may be called, when they cet married. 'In some States, when a man wants to get married an ne has to uo is to go to a Parson or to a Justice of the Peace, and the knot is tied with the utmost dispatch. But in Indiana it is necessary for the blushing candidate for matrimonial honors to nrocure a li cense from the County Clerk.

The manner of it 1 1 getting tuis license varies according to tne manners and knowledge of the applicant, and it is amusing to witness the various styles in which the Clerk or his deputies are informed what is wanting. A few, widowers, who are used to it, or old bachelors, who are hardened, walk in and state their business, hand over the re quisite nmount of postal currency, taken up the license and walk out, treating the whole matter simply as a piece ot business. "But these are few very few. The ma' ioritv soflvl open the door and walk in with a manner which wonderfully resembles that of a dog just convicted of stealing, gaze all around the office as if looking for somebody who ain't there, sneak across the room to the stove and if there is an empty chair sit down, then cast furtive glances at the clerks, occasionally interspersing tho performance with sighs grievous After being importuned several times as to the nature of their business, they finally muster up courage enough to ask if the Clerk is in, and finding whether he is or not they, after more sighs, more blushes, and much stammering, finally come to the object of their call, which they state in various ways. One fellow will ask for a "warrant for a woman," another "for one of them thar papers what marries a feller," a third who is inclined to be facetious for a 'death warrant," a fourth for "a pair of licenses," another for "some papers," and still another for "reve aue stamps." "When being sworn, or signing an affidavit, and when the Clerk is making out the papers, the parties generally seem to tako things a little easier, but when the license is ready, their trepidation seems to commence anew.

They take up tho paper, examine it carefully, read it through, fold it up, and put it into a pocket book, and then usually ask "What's to pay," but sometimes attempt to go off, forgetful of the fact that the expenses of marriage begin before the ceremony takes place. Generally, however, they pay the fee without any hesitation, and after a careful examination of pockets to see if the valuable document is all right, they slip out in a way which is calculated to make an observer think that they have just done some mean trick, of which they are ashamed, and fear that somebody will tell on them." ood Judges think no Flavoring Extracts equal Burnett's. Unclaimed Fractional Currency. Treasurer Spinner desires persons who have forwarded packages of mutilated fractional currency to the Department, but have not received a reply, announcing the receipt of the package and inclosing the amount of the sum forwarded, to address a letter as before, stating distinctly the amount forwarded, the date of transmittal, and the name and post office address of the writer. The officers of the Treasury may thus be enabled to identify a large number of packages now in their possession, the lor warders of which neglected to state their names or post offices.

The Poor. "While chill November's surlv blast makes fields and forests bare," the cold hand of poverty chills the heart of many helDless widows and orphans, lheir trials, semingly too great for human endurance, are met with noble fortitude, though almost sufficient to break the heart with anguish and despair. Knowing that winter, like seed time and harvest, must come, with its cold, piercing winds, every little crevice through which the frnnr wnnlrl pnt.pr is earefullv tilled with torn nnd tattered shred a of clothing, and fuel of everv kind is gathered, from almost every place, to be used in the most frugal manner during tne long, com winters uigms. i trust those resting in the lap of fortune will remember the needy, for riches hath wings and may fly away, leaving some who have withheld charity in the day of prosperity to pieaa lor it in tne uay oi A wealthy planter of Mississippi is at New York urging emigrants to go South instead of est. Brown's Vermifuge Comfits or Worm Loxenges. Much sickness, undoubtedly, with children and adults, attributed to other causes, is occasioned by worms. "Vermifuge Comfits," although effectual in destroying worms, can do no possible injury to the most delicate chyd. This valuable combination has been successfully used by physicians, and found to be safe and sure in eradicating worms, so hurtful to children. Children having worms require immediate attention, as neglect of the trouble often causes prolonged sickness.

Symptoms of worms in children are often overlooked. Worms in the stomach and bowels cause irritation, which can be removed only by the use of a sure remedy. The combination of ingredients used in making Brown's Vermifuge Comfits is such as to give the best possible effect with safety. CURTIS Sc BROWN. Proprietors.

Sold by all Druggists. mayl8 dw6m Reasons Why tbe AMERICAN WATCH, Made at Watham, IS TBE BEST. It is made on the best principle. Its frame is composod of SOLID PLATES. No jar can inter fere with the harmony of its working and no sud den shock can damage its achinery.

Every piece is made and finished by machinery (itself famous for its novelty, as well as for its effectiveness) and is, threfore, properly made. The watch is what all mechanism should be ACCURATE, SIMPLE, STRONG AND ECONOMICAL. Except some high grades, too costly for goneral use, foreign watches are chiefly made by women and boys. Such watchos are composed of several hundred pieces, screwed and riveted together, and require constant repairs to keep them in any kind of order. All persons who have carried "anores," lo pinos" and "English Patent Levers," are perfectly well aware of the truth of this statement.

At the beginning of our enterprise, more than ten yoars ago, it was our first ohjeot to make a thoroughly good low priced watoh for the million, to take the place of these foreign impositions the refuse of foreign factories which were entirely unsaleable at home and perfectly worthless everywhere. How well we have accomplished this may bo un dsrstood from the fact, that after so many years of publio trial, we now make MORE THAN HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES SOLD IN THE UNITED STATES, and that no others have ever givea suoh unive sal satisfaction. While this department of our business is continued with increased facilities for perfect work, wo are at present engaged in the manufacture of watches of the very HIGHEST GRADE KNOWN TO CHRONOME TRY. unequalled by. anything hitherto inadeW ourselves, and unsurpassed by anything made iu the wor d.

For this purpose wo have the ample facilities. Wo have erected an addition to our main buildings expressly for this branoh of our business, and have filled it with the best workmen in our service. New machines and appliances hare been constructed, which porform their work with consummate delicacy and exactness. The choicest and most approved materials only arc used, and we challenge comparison between this grade of our work and the finest imported chronometers. AVe do not pretend to sell our watches for less money than foreign watches, but we do assert, without fear of contradiction, that for the same money our product is incomparably superior.

All our watchos. of whatever grade, are fully warranted and his warrantee is good at all times against us or our agents in all parts of the world. CAUTION. The public aTe cautioned te uy only of respectable dealors. All persons soiling counterfeits will be prosecuted.
