MOTES AND QTJEHIEM Belattng to ths History of Dauphin County. LI. Street Regulators. On the 10th of May, 1707, William Glass, Jacob Bucher, and Samuel Berrybill were appointed ttsgub.tor of tho Streets, Lanes and Alleys of the Borough Harrisburg What were the duties of these municipal officers X. Tho following correspondence comes to us through the courtesy of A. Botd Hamilton, Esq. It gives a statement of affairs in this locality, which it is well for us to properly understand.

It will be seen that the difficulty to get out the Battalion in tho latter part of December, 1776, was the fact that one half of the men were already in service the re mainder, although Col. Burd does not say so, bad only recently returned from the Jerseys, wnore they had endured untold hardships had to supply their own clothing, blankets, shoes, besides their rifle. Many of these associators had not recovered from the exposure of tho Fall campaign the field was an ex tensive one, as cot. auia says, weather Inclement and severe, and it was more than the patriotism of many of them could surmount. Col.

Burd's resignation did not proceed from his inability to gather up the remnant of his bat uuon ana marcn tnem 10 mm front The true secret of this was that Burd, as well as many of the other officers of the old Provincial servJoe during the French and Indian war, were lighted in the officering ol the Pennsylvania Line. Those who had control of aJIairs did not want them. Perchance if they had taken into their counsel some of these men, it would have gone better with the whig cause, and the coun ar would not have been on the ragged ge of destiny as long as it was; and yet, who knows? Col. Burd to William Atlee, Etq. Tiki as, 27th December, 1776.

Dsab Sib I send you herewith the present state of my battalion, as I have related to General Mifflin. I mean that you should read my letter to the General, and then seal and deliver it. I have in lormed the officers in the battalion that I shall attend at any time and place of ren desvous to supply any company or de tachment, that intend to march, with money, and render every other acceptable ervico In my power. You will observe that I have resigned the command of the battalion, and the Major did say at Mid dle town that he would also resign. How that may he, I cannot say but think It nay be proper, for the present, to send any orders that may be neccessary to the Major.

lam, with much esteem, sir, Tour obedient, humble servant, James Btod. Floats to let Mr. Bhlppen peruse my letter to the General before you deliver it. and this to you, it you think proper. Ut supra.

J. B. William Atlxb, Esq. Col. Burd to Gen.

Mifflin. Tivxax, t7th Dtumber, 1778, 8n i I had the honour to be favored with your orders last night, dated 93rd current, previous to which I bad resigned the command of the battalion. But this morning, by Captain Crouch, have forwarded your order to Major Cornelius vox, wno at present commands tne Dat tallon, Lieutenant Colonel Murray being taken prisoner at Fort Washington. I think It my duty to give you my reason for resignation, and the more especially at this time of publick danger. II I had an opportunity or a personal conference, I think I would have convinced you that I bad not only a reason for this step, but a necessity for so doing.

I would inform you that the battalion is very long, between forty and fifty miles la length, and broad withal; that it reonlres time to communicate an orders. and Inconvenient to get the whole battalion together, especially at this season of the year. However, in consequence of the orders you refer to, I gave out or ders for the whole battalion to meet in three districts, on Monday, the 6th in stent, the middle of which I attended myself; and further, directions for all the oflcers of the battalion to a. set me at arber's Mill, on Tuesday, the 10th instant, to make report of their proceedings. Accordingly, on Tuesday, they all did meet me, and the report was that few volunteers were to be found upon which I gave orders in writing, nod sent them to every company in the battalion, that the whole battalion should rendezvous at Middletown, on Monday, tho 16th Current, in order to march by divisions to Join General Washington and those that were not provided with arms, 'I promlfed to have them provided at Fbiu aavjpnia tnat money nornotmng snouia be wanting.

I attended ready to march with the battalion, from Monday, ilia 10th, to Sunday night, the SSod instant, und not one man turned out but eighteen, seven of whom were officers, myself included, except a small company of volunteers, commanded by Captain Elder, of thirty three, officers included, whom I marched oil. I put it to the vote of the eighteen, if I should not march with them it was carried against me I should not. On Saturday morning I was on my Journev to go to to see you. The officers advUed I should not proceed, bnt remain to endeavour to get the battalion to march this they thought more advisable for the good of the service. Lest I should stand in the way, I thought proper to resign, oflering at the kmc time my personal attendance, and to render any service acceptable upon notice beiog given me of such being wanting.

You will no doubt expect I should give some reasons for such conduct )n the battalion at this time. I cannot suggest any, unless the following may be tne reasons inac mrce companies nave already marched to camp, one of which, Til Captain James Murray's still remains there; that Captain Smith has takon two companies from the battalion, and Captain John Murray one, which renders the hajttallion so weak that they nave not more, or very few men more, left than are sufficient to attend their cattle, Ac. It is not due to any prejudice against myself. I have commanded the battalion ever since our troubles began, with pleasure to myself and to the battalion seemingly for anything I know to the contrary, and have been able to com ply with all orders heretofore given me, which was not the case in the last instance to which your order alludes. And fiom what I have already said, I make no doubt I will tuaa unirnpeached in your Judgment, and of all those of my superior officers Judging I have done everything In my power.

Alter making an apology for troubling nil With (l.lo 1 "crawl, a oeg leave 10 subscribe myself, sir, your most obedient, James Bcbd. The Honourable ri Thomas Mifflin, Esq. TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION la Old Paxtang Church Graveyard. I. I The Inscriptions on the tombstones in burial ground of old Paxtang Pres byterian Meeting House have been care fully transcribed and revised, since tnese havelbeen copied a number of the inscrip tions have already become illegible.

By preserving this record, which we made at the time tor our own personal reierence, the descendants of those buried within the shadow of that venerable structure, especially those in the far away places of our TJn ion may find the beginnings of their Family History. It Is ot greRt value dui mucu ot that depends upon those wno can ap preciate such labor. The tombstone in scriptions of Christ Church, graveyard, Philadelphia, published in book form ten years ago at the price of five dollars per copy, cannot be purchased now lor twice that sum; and yet the records which we propose giving in Notes and Queri are just extensive and just as valuable. Jn due time we hope to go over the Hanovtr Church burial records and give them to our readers. The Deny Church inscriptions were eagerly sought for, and frequent inquiries have since been made for them.

Many of our read ers are preserving these Notes and Queries in scrap books, and that is the part of wisdom, for It is surprising how trequently tnese sometimes apparently trivial, are referred to. la memory of MARGARKT A LEX AND ER and her two babes. Thousands of these fronts In that eity show this decxy and It Is now apparent that every one of three buildings, sooner or later, must be replaced by others of moro durable material. There are millions in this as a loss.

Cull and see polished and hammered samples at Greene Opperman's No. 22 N. SECOND STREET. WHAT IS DYSPEPSIA? Among: the many symptoms of Dyspepsia or indigestion the most prominent are: Variable appetite; faint, gnawing feeling at pit of the stomach, with unsatisfied craving for food; heartburn, feeling of weight and wind in the stomach, bad breath, bad taste in the mouth, low spirits, general prostration, headache, and constipation. There is no form of disease more prevalent than Dyspepsia, and none so peculiar to the high living and rapid eating American people.

Alcohol and tobacco produce Dyspepsia; also, bad air, rapid eating, etc. BURDOCK BLOOD BITTERS will cure the worst case, by regulating the bowels and toning up the digestive organs. Sold everywhere. J. B.
