OCTOBER 28, 2001 Boston Sunday Globe Sports C17 College football Crimson get message, deliver Green sets record in grand style Yv- Harvard roars back to stop Dartmouth By Marvin Pave GLOBE STAFF i7etwfrragri versilv nas HMil played 1,149 football games since 1874, but it never came back from a larger deficit to win than yesterday afternoon, when the Crimson erased a 21-0 halftime deficit and preserved their undefeated season. Harvard's 31-21 victory at home was very much in doubt after Dartmouth took it to the Crimson physically and emotionally, but when it came to emotion, no play was bigger for Harvard than flanker Carl Morris's option pass to Sam Taylor that got the Crimson on the board and set off a three-touchdown barrage in a 3:49 span of the third quarter that drew the Crimson (6-0, 4-0 Ivy League) even. Harvard, scoring on four consecutive possessions, went ahead to stay on Anders Blewett's 30-yard field goal on the opening play of the fourth quarter, his first of the season. They came ready to play and we weren't. But then we came back to play with tremendous character and we made some big, poised plays in the clutch," said Harvard coach Tim Murphy, whose halftime message to his team, he said, "you couldnt print" Harvard got the message and quickly.

It held Dartmouth to 27 yards of offense in the second half and made every big play in the process. Ryan Fitzpatrick, playing in place of Neil Rose and making his first start, won the battle of freshman quarterbacks subbing for injured starters. He threw for 262 yards and Harvard's second score to Morris, whose 11 catches for 153 yards put him second on Harvard's all-time receiving list with 132 catches. The perfectly timed 32-yarder to Morris came right after Dartmouth's Steve Jensen was hit by Xavier Goss on the kickoff return following Harvard's first score. Shawn Parker recovered and, said Murphy, "that sequence was crucial because we needed the football and the momentum." By Michael Vega GLOBE STAFF William Green I entered last night's i game against Notre JJ Dame needing 31 ti nrt yards to become the notebook first running back in Boston College history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. The 6-foot-l-inch, 215-pound junior did it in grand style by rushing for a 71-yard touchdown on his fifth carry of the game, tying the score, 7-7, with 1:24 left in the first quarter. i'. Green, who earned a share of Big East Offensive Player of the Week honors last week after rushing 29 times for 182 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-7 romp Over conference foe Pittsburgh, topped that performance with 195 yards on 28 carries. He added a 70-yard touchdown reception.

Green rushed for 1,164 yards last season as a backup to Ced-ric Washington and has run for 100 yards 1 1 times in his career, with last night the seventh time he reached the mark in eight games this season. He failed to hit the century mark in a 34-20 loss at Virginia Tech Oct 13 when the Hokies' vaunted defense, ranked No. 1 nationally, held Green to 74 yards on 21 carries. 1 Green, who began the season No. 21 on BCs all-time rushing list, had shot up to sixth (426 carries for 2,384 yards) entering the game.

His 71-yard jaunt moved him past Omarl Walker (2,471 yards, 1994-97) for fifth place, and he later supplanted Keith Barnette (2,500 yards, 1973-75). I By halftJme, Green had 13 carries for 152 yards. At night's end, ie had 1,164 for the season and 2,579 for his career. Colombo KO'd BCs offensive line took a huge hit on its first possession when Starting right tackle Marc Colombo injured the medial collateral ligament of his right knee and limped off with 7:04 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Dan Murphy, a 6-6, 279-pounder from Dedham, replaced Colombo Notre Dame is winless in its last seven night games, a streak that Priestley propels Panthers ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA-David Priestley was i8 for 24 for 204 yards and two touchdowns and Nick Lotz matched a school record by kicking four field goals as Pittsburgh beat Temple, 33-7, yesterday.

The Panthers (2-5, 1-3 Big East) won for the first time since their season-opening 31-0 victory over East Tennessee State. Temple (2-5, 1-3) has lost five of its last six. Priestley threw both TD passes in the first quarter, connecting with Antonio Bryant from 6 yards on the game's first drive and Lou-saka Polite on a 5-yarder. 1," The Panthers' first touchdown was set up by RJ. English's 46-yard reception to the 28 on the first play from scrimmage.

Raymond Kirkley gained 16 yards on a run that put the ball at the 6 and Bryant scored two plays later. The second touchdown pass came on play action as Priestley faked to Kirkley, rolled right, and hit Polite with a short pass into the end zone. Lotz had field goals of 26 and 27 yards in the second quarter to give the Panthers a 20-0 halftime lead. He kicked a 37-yarder in the third quarter after Jay Junko blocked a punt that gave the Panthers the ball on Temple's 26. Pittsburgh's Brian Guzek stripped the ball from Tanardo Sharps and ran it back 80 yards with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter to make the score 33-0.

1 Temple's Mike McGann was 27-for-52 passing, one attempt shy of the school record, for 240 yards. Ufhe Owls rushed ff minus-36 yards on 30 carries. eVT Dartmouth safety Ken Phelan a third-down play. "In the second half, they forced us into passing situations and really teed off on us defensively," said Dartmouth coach John Lyons, whose team fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Ivy League. That scenario proved the undoing of Big Green quarterback Evan Love, who after seeing his team fall behind, was picked off by Dante Balestracci, whose touchdown was negated by penalties.

Then, with Dartmouth at the Harvard 24, linebacker Marc La-bo rsky sacked Love and Niall Murphy recovered Love's fumble for the Crimson, who got a late score from Palazzo after Dartmouth couldnt convert on fourth down deep in its territory with time running out Fitzpatrick, in addition to his clutch passing, carried the ball 17 times for 58 yards to lead Harvard in both categories. "They were keying on our tailbacks," said Murphy, "so we had to go to Ryan more on the run." Fitzpatrick, who was intercepted by Kevin Hogan then had to ran for another TD as the Lions surprised the Bulldogs in New York. Yale (3-3, 1-3 Ivy) closed to 21-14 on Peter Lee's touchdown pass to Billy Brown. But on the subsequent possession McCall connected on his second scoring pass to Peck. McCall finished with 241 yards passing and Peck had career highs with nine receptions and 186 yards for the Lions (2-4, 2-2), who won for the second straight week after operung the season with four losses.

Lee, who threw for four touchdowns against Columbia last year in a 41-0 Yale win, was 28 of 56 for 294 yards, while McCall completed 17 of 31 passes. Cornell 10, Princeton 7 Peter Iverson atoned for an earlier miss by kicking a 40-yard fourth-quarter field goal and Cornell avoided its worst start since 1985 by defeating host Princeton. Ricky Rahne threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Keith Ferguson, and safety Jamie Moriarty had a fumble recovery and an interception in the second half as Cornell (1-5, 1-3 Ivy) snapped a six-game losing streak. The win was the first for Big Red coach Tim Pendergast David Splithoff threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mike Chiusano for Princeton (1-5, 1-3), which lost its fourth straight Taylor Northrop nearly tied the game with 7:21 to go, but his field goal attempt hit the crossbar and bounced away. goal with 40 seconds remaining in the half before 12,324 fans, didn't let that setback ruin his day. "I was kind of antsy in the first half," said Fitzpatrick, "but I settled down after that Having a receiver like Morris can help settle you down." Harvard, which beat Dartmouth for the fifth consecutive year, still has some hard work ahead, said Murphy. "We've played four Ivy League games and we've been behind at halftime in three," said Murphy, whose team completed the program's greatest comeback since the Crimson rallied from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Columbia in 1985. That's if you don't count the "Harvard beats Yale" 29-29 tie in 1968, when Harvard fell behind, 22-0. They came out and dominated," said Balestracci, "but we took a hard look at ourselves in the mirror at halftime." The rest was a great reflection on Harvard's still perfect season.
