Uriffin and Micbaels, it is alleged, were seen leaving ihe neigh borhood, aud, when questioned by police tneD, aaid tbey were on tbeir way to sound a fire alarm, having aeen tbe blaze as tbey were paasing. Shortly after Micbaels waa locked up he agreed to give tbe police a signed confoasion. Io bis own haodwiiting he prepared and aigned a statemeut setting forth that about 1 o'clock Sunday moroing Uriffin auggested to Micbaels that tbey aet fire to tbe two housej. Michaela etated tbat he declinetl to bo a party to tbe ciime, but he aaw Uriftiu apply the matcb, svbich atarted the blaze. They then hurried away from the neighborhood.

The fire, it will be remembered, was dis rovered and extinguished by Officers J.mea and Henderaon. The caae was called in the Police Court this morning. Mr. L. IL Macbeu appeared aa coun for Oriftin.

Officer Henderson later rearreated Micbaels, who will be held aa an acceaao'y.

It was not known poaitively whether the negroes left Norfolk on the Baltimore or Washington steamer.
