Freshman quarterback Marc Eddy of Southborough threw for 247 yards and four touchdowns as Bentley (9-2, 8-2) earned a spot in Saturday's Northeast-10 Conference championship game against C.W. Post in Brook-ville, N.Y., with a 44-17 romp over Stonehill (4-7, 3-7) yesterday in Easton. Eddy, who completed 15 of 27 passes with one interception, set an NCAA all-division record for touchdown passes by a freshman (31) when he connected with junior Brian Whalen for his third TD pass of the game, an 11-yarder with 8:05 remaining. He later hooked up with fellow freshman Dallas Mall of Northborough for a 15-yard score that enabled Mall, who caught seven passes for 135 yards, to extend his NCAA all-division freshman record of touchdown receptions in a season to 23. Junior Paul Reed of Roxbury rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons.

Merrimack 17, Bryant 3 Jon Garro caught a 28-yari touchdown pass from Tom Ruswick on the game's opening drive, and Jon Reid scored on a 24-yard run with 44 seconds remaining as the Warriors (6-4, 6-4) topped the Bulldogs (4-5, 4-5) at Smithfield, R.I. AIC 28, UMass-Lowell 12 Tom Guy passed for 241 yards and a touchdown, leading the visiting Yellow Jackets (8-2, 8-2) over the River Hawks (1-9, 1-9). GeoJ Gardner was 17 of 30 for 177 yards to set the UMass-Lowell season record for passing yards with 1,992. Assumption 23, Mount Ida 9 James Bucci ran fcr 88 yards and a pair of second-half touchdowns as the Greyhounds (1-10) rallied from a 9-0 deficit to top the Mustangs (1-8) in Newton. NESCAC Tufts 20, Middlebury 6 Keven Kelley ran for 135 yards and a touchdown to set Tufts' single-season rushing record as the Jumbos (6-2) topped the Panthers in Medford.

Kelley finished with 1,079 yards, breaking Paul Dre-sens's mark of 1,070 set in 1988. Donovan Brown scored on an 89-yard punt return for Tufts. N.E. Conference Westf ield St. 12, Nichols Shawn Lyman rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown as the Owls (10-0) blanked the Bison (6-4) in the New England Football Conference championship game in Worcester to earn a berth in the NCAA Division 3 playoffs.

Freedom Western Conn. 16, Norwich 7 Michael Scipione threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Russell early in the second quarter, and Anton Thompson recovered a Norwich fumble in the end zone 13 seconds later in Northfield, VL, as the Colonials (7-1, 5-1) clinched share of the Freedon Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division 3 playoffs. Plymouth St 43, WPI 14 Matt Simpson threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers (7-3, 5-1) got a share of the conference crown, but a loss to Western Connecticut cost them a playoff berth. Springfield 49, Union 35 Freshman Mike Judge ran for 95 yards and two TDs, threw a 46-yard scoring pass to Bob Sedlor, and set up another score with a 44-yard completion to Luke Quigley as the Pride (4-5) surprised the Dutchmen (8-2) in Schenectady, N.Y. Other N.E.

Utah St. 38, Connecticut 31 Emmett White ran for 117 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Aggies (3-5) over the Huskies (2-7) at Storrs, Conn. UConn rallied from a 38-10 deficit in the second half of a penalty-marred game liams ambushed Amherst for a 23-20 overtime victory in a climactic collision of unbeatens yesterday, the opponents lined up at midfield and shook hands, not necks. It wasnt that they'd suffered temporary amnesia after jousting for four-plus ferocious quarters to determine which 7-0 team was worthier. The postgame ritual is as old as this Division 3 rivalry, which was formed just the other day, 1884.

"Most of the kids who come to these schools are from the same background," said Williams safetywide receiverkickerkick re-turnermaitre d' Scott Farley. "It's a matter of mutual respect. You leave it on the field. Well probably see these guys in life on Wall didnt diminish the intensity of the participants before they finally settled matters on fullback Tyler Shea's 1-yard bullrush, which eclipsed the 22-yard field goal by David Bodner on Amherst's OT possession. Both teams were aiming for a perfect season.

Both sought to rule the New England Small College Athletic Conference, which orders its players back into classrooms rather than playoffs or bowls at the end of the season. And both coveted sovereignty in the Little Three, having beaten the other dues-payer, Wes-leyan, in a conference that is both certifiably the country's oldest without a change in membership (since 1910) and presumably the smallest. The miniature spoils belonged to Williams because of its resiliency. The Ephs spotted Amherst a 17-7 halftone advantage. "We were reeling," said Williams coach Dick Farley.

"We shot ourselves in the foot" But the Ephs aimed elsewhere after that against a defense that had allowed only 26 points all season, an average of 3.7 a game. Shea had helped double that when he plowed a yard for the game's first score at 7:26. And after the break, Williams kept firing the right way behind the NESCAC's top passer, Joe Reardon (23 of 43, 224 yards), parlaying a 20-yard Scott Farley field goal in the third quarter and Michael Hackett's 4-yard run with 10:23 left in the fourth into a 17-17 regulation tie. Then Shea provided perfect symmetry, scoring the last TD to go with the first The linebacker was coming up," he said. "I said to my-self, 'Whoa, buddy, you might want to make an adjustment' But he kept coming, and I went under him." Lifting the Ephs over Amherst And triggering the ceremonial congratulations and conciliation by players who seemed dazed by the proceedings but were sincere in their sentiments nonetheless.

"It's a common-fought battle," said Shea. "I'm sure there are some good guys on their team. If you put us in the same room, odds are we wouldn't kill each other." Postgame fellowship isn't the sole departure from the gridiron goliath mentality that consumes more pretentious campuses. The SAT scores of one player at Weston Field might have exceeded the total of some big-time college rosters. On the other hand, the average lineman here could have fit inside one end of a barbell in the Nebraska weight room.

And both teams were calling it quits after their eighth game of the season, which is about the length of spring practice for the megapowers who are three divisions, many millions of dollars in pro contracts, and countless recruiting violations removed from this placid atmosphere in the shadow of the leaf-encrusted Berkshires. So this, by contrast, was genteel football, of course. Not quite. Unless they printed up the fans' dueling clusters of scatological sweatshirts in the school libraries. Or unless they offer a course in heckling, which some Williams supporters did to such an extent, according to an Amherst official, they forced losing coach J.

On the field, the lads of Amherst and Williams displayed no such shameless behavior. But while they may treat the sport as an extracurricular activity instead of an academic major, the stakes in this showdown were as precious as a Bowl Championship Series berth and all the accompanying booty. Bragging rights may have been foremost.

"This game means everything," said Shea. "It's as big in its own way as Florida-Florida State." For those who have a taste for such things. Dick Farley isn't among them. In his 15th year as coach, he wrapped up his fifth perfect season and improved his record to 101-16-3, including 13-1-1 against Amherst With a winning percentage of .854, Farley doestft need to bow to the Bowdens and Paternos of the coaching stratosphere, but he doesnt even want to join them. This is our playoff," he said.

"Tomorrow I go to the leaves. Let the big guys keep coaching into December." The Ephs were the giants of November to a crowd of 11,379 about the number of patrons you'd find in a restroom at halftone in State College, or Knoxville, Tenn. who jammed the field adjacent to hardy hackers squeezing in their last round at Taconic Golf Club. All the customers got in for free; at Williams, when they refer to admissions, they're talking about incoming freshmen, not athletic revenue. Gratis or not, this was a major attraction.

It marked the third time in the series that both teams entered with perfect records, but unlike in 1942 and 1964, the Ephs prevailed. Their lead is now 65-46-5, but that tally is a bit murky. The series goes back so far," said a Williams spokesman, "that we weren't sure who won some games. So we said to Amherst, 'Here, you take these and well take Unique concept Estimated supremacy. Another novelty is Scott Farley, the coach's son who does everything but pass to himself.

Yesterday he managed only six tackles, two interceptions for 15 yards, four receptions for 24, a field goal and two extra points, two kickoff returns for 35 yards, and two punt runbacks for 15. But afterward, he was dwelling on the 21-yarder he missed in the third quarter that would have prevented OT. Never mind that he probably shouldn't have been in uniform by then. He'd separated his right shoulder while returning his second kick-off, forcing his father to overhaul a game plan that was supposed to feature the junior Farley. "I thought I'd broken my collarbone," said Scott "But I wasnt going to sit this one out even with a broken collarbone." So it's not Oklahoma-Nebraska, USC-UCLA, Michigan-Ohio State, or Auburn-Alabama.

The Amherst-Williams football IQs are just as high, the passions just as inflamed, as those of their colossal counterparts. And triumph is equally cherished. This is modestly billed as The Biggest Little Game In America all right, they're not immune from a tad of self-grandeur even at this level and yesterday it was gargantuan.
