But the Crimson proved to be resourceful enough to take a 28-26 victory over Princeton to improve to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League, Harvard's best start since 1968. This was a reality check," Harvard receiver Carl Morris said.

"It made us stop and think about what we have, and we have a lot of good things going for us." Ryan Fitzpatrick was among those positives. Fitzpatrick completed his first pass of the season midway through the second quarter, then, after Rose departed for the duration, Fitzpatrick led Harvard on the decisive scoring drive early in the final quarter. "We knew he could do it and he just came out and did it," Morris said of Fitzpatrick. "He knows what he is doing." Fitzpatrick executed the basics, but also displayed spontaneity on the key plays of the winning drive. Fitzpatrick scrambled for 14 yards on third and 10, on the next play threw a 37-yard flea-flicker pass to Dan Farley, and then he turned a third-and-8 play into a 13-yard scoring pass to Morris for a 28-20 lead with 13:33 remaining.

Princeton (1-4, 1-2), a clear underdog, was in position to win on the final play, thanks to the game's best professional prospect, Taylor Northrop. But Northrop's 49-yard field goal attempt hooked wide. "I am stunned," Northrop said. "I hit it nice, definitely, I hit it solid and kept my head down and I thought it was through." Said Harvard coach Tim Murphy: "First of all, I told the coaching staff that everyone is going to 7 o'clock Mass this morning. If they had gotten to the 25 he probably makes it he never misses from there.

Even the pros only make about 55 percent from 50 yards and he may be a pro someday, but he just didnt make it" Harvard gained command ear- Ivy League roundup 'i'. a Harvard's Carl Morris, who had a fights off the tackle of Princeton's ly and appeared headed to an easy victory after Josh Staph's second 1-yard touchdown run made the score 14-3 early in the second quarter. But Chris Roser-Jones halted Harvard's momentum by intercepting a Rose pass midway through the second quarter. Five plays later, Mike Chiusano caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from David Splithoff to cut the deficit to 14-10. Within the next five plays, Rose departed with a shoulder injury and the Tigers scored again on a 7-yard run by Cameron Atkinson for a 17-14 advantage.

Rose returned, but his next pass was intercepted by Paul Simbi, leading to a 42-yard field goal by Northrop. Harvard was on the verge of regaining control, but Sam Taylor fumbled on the 1-yard line with 1:04 remaining in the first half. The Crimson took the lead, 21-20, but Rose reinjured his shoulder after scoring on a 3-yard run with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter. The deciding drive had a slow start as Fitzpatrick and fourth-string tailback Rodney Thomas, who replaced Staph (ankle), failed to gain yardage on the first two plays. But Fitzpatrick scrambled for a first down on the next play, and the Crimson were on the way to victory "This team doesn't have complacency in them," Murphy said.
