Police said James Reeder, 18, died at the scene of the crash on State Road 23, just south of the state line. Lt. Matt Blank of the St. Joseph County (Ind.) Department said southbound pickup truck went across the center line of the road around 4:30 a.m.

and hit a semi truck. The semi was driven by Troy Massey, 43, of Coloma. Massey was taken to South Memorial Hospital with back pain and minor facial injuries, news reports said. Lawrence Public Schools officials said an empty chair, draped with graduation cap and National Honor Society cloak, was left at graduation ceremonies at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

There was a moment of silence for Reeder during the commencement ceremony. The graduates wore a black patch for Reeder and another for classmate Rebecca Burnett, who had died earlier in the school year, Superintendent John Overly told Mlive. Reeder was due to graduate with high honors, according to information from the school. Police said semi had just been filled at a fuel depot and was carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel. The cab of the semi caught re because of the crash, but the re spread to the tanker portion of the semi.

It took emergency crews an hour to douse the fire. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management was called to the scene because of the fuel spill. Police said the investigation into the crash is continuing.
