For a choice lot of fine groceries, go to T. P. Garman, corner Third and Chestnut, Harris burg, Pa. The Governor has appointed Mark Burke, of East Birmingham, Allegheny county, a notary public for a term of three years. Peaches have come, but the quality is not yet of the best.

Those in the market now could be appropriately, called friends of the doctors. Mayor's Court. Since our last report there were two vagrants, two inebriates and one disorderly before the Mayor, who were disposed of in the usual manner. Mr. Wm.

Haterstick announces himself as a candidate for Director of the Poor, through the columns of this paper. Mr. H. was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Mr. Bowman.

Another heavy rain storm visited us during last night. The atmosphere, seem to be cooled any thereby. The heat to day has been quite oppressive. Up to eleven o'clock this morning no dispatches had been received at the Executive Department or Adjutant General's office from Williamsport. Adj utant General Russell went to that city yesterday afternoon.

A number of the citizens of Mechan icsburg are preparing to form a colony to go West, and held a meeting for that purpose on last Saturday, at whicn a number of addresses were made, and a committee appointed to draft articles of association. Dan Dietricic was arrested by officer Hippie at the depot last evening on a charge of being drunk and disorderly on a picnic train, and breaking window glass in the cars. He was committed to answer at the next term of court in default of $300 bail. Contractors are interested in an advertisement which appears in another column, asking proposals for excavation and straightening Paxton creek and the old channel above Briggs street. Mosquitoes are becoming quite abund ant, and their bewitching strains can be heard at all hours of the night. They are very intrusive and seem to laugh at screens. Can't somebody invent an ar ticle that will prove sure death to them fjoaiou, pennyroyal and carbolic acid do not seem to have any effect on them. An Ore Bank Caves In A Man Killed. Between nine and ten o'clock this morning an embankment caved in at the Lebanon Valley ore bank, near swatara Btauon, instantly Killing John Meackley, who was at work there.

The location is beautiful, and within one eighth of a mile of the Penn sylvania railroad. tickets. which can be had at Harrisburg and all intermediate points, will be issued on the 31st Inst, good until the 10th of August.

Everything will be done to make this meeting interesting. Don't foreet that the "Old Reliable" theatre company appears at Brant's hall on Monday evenincr next, when the great sensational drama of "EastLynne, or the Elopement," will be presented, in wnicn Madame D'Este appears as Liaay jsaDei" ana "Madame vine." The company is composed of a large number of first class performers. The papers of the places in which the com pany has appeared speak in the highest terms of it. Reserved seats may be procured at ward's music Btore. Singular Summer.

Upon the principle that misery loves company, it will lighten the summer and swelter which we have to suffer in our own locality, to know that this section is no exception to the general rule, as far as heard from, The Intense heat of the present summer is not more remarkable than the severe thunder storms, and the damage done by the lightning. The temperature is unlike tnat or any previous warm seasons of recent years. The closeness and sultriness of the atmosphere generate electricity wiin great rapidity, ana in duos extraordinary tempests, which only dear the air for a short time, when the tropical, ueaia ageuu uegin. A special meeting of the Odd Fel Iows' Hall association will be held at the office of the secretary to morrow (Saturday) evening at seven o'clock. A directors' meeting of the Hope nre company will be held tnis (Friday) evening at 7:30 o'clock, in the hall of said company.

Second street, above State. Each and every director is expected to be prevent, as business of im portance will be transacted. By order of chief director. Borers. For a regular, persistent borer commend us to the majority of those chans who daily swarm into the stores'of our merchants with their carpet bags and valises.

It takes some energy to shake them off without purchasing of their wares, and they will stand a snub orrebutt with a nonchalance that no independent mechanic would permit. It is surprising tnat so many young men prefer this business, when they are often treated with curcness ana incivility, to the hammer, the saw or the plane, where the good workman is always treated with respect and is not oblieed to almost sink his manhood to gain a small favor. The Mendelssohn Picnic This musical society held its first annual picnic at Marysville yesterday, and a jollier set of young folks there never was. rom tne time mey congregated at the depot in the morning until their return in the evening, there was tne liveliest spirit manifest. Throughout the day nothing arose to mar the eDioy ment of any.

It seemed as if no one added more to the amusements than another, but each one did his best to be nappy. The society can reel highly compli mented on. having the arrangements so complete, and on the picnie being so successful. Indeed, we regret that there are not more similar picnics, where there are few guests, and so well selected. The least that can be said of this one is as a picnic, it was the happiest occasion of the season.

A New Express Office. As announced some time since, the Philadelphia and Reading railroad company has decided to have an express line of its own, and yesterday Mr. E. E. Parke, the general superintendent of the express company, visited this city to make arrangements for opening an office here on the first of September.

The large room on the first floor of Brant's hall has been leased for the purpose named. A ticket and telegraph office will occupy the same room. Arrangements are being made by the company with other express companies, by which important connections will be made. We understand that Mr. W.

H. Smith, one of our well known citizens, and who for a num ber of years has filled a ciertsmp in the Adjutant General's office, will be the agent at this point. Mr. Smith is a genial and obliging gentleman, and with his experience in the business will, we have no doubt, discharge the dunes of the position in a manner satisfactory to the company and parties transacting business with it. Middletown Items.

We clip the following from the Journal of yester day On Tuesday afternoon, while Mr. ohn H. Not withstanding the severe pain, he managed to walk home, when he had the arm promptly dressed by Dr. Mish. He is now doing well. The trustees of the E. O.

All the young men of our town should turn out on this occasion. The Sixth Annual Camp Meeting of the United Brethren C. M.
