We were visited this morning by quite a heavy rain storm. It will no doubt have a good effect on the grass crops, and on vegetables generally. Several good sized fish ponds might have been noticed on Third street, between Strawberry alley and Walnut streets, this morning. Several catfish were placed in them, but did not survive the accumulated mud and filth. The supervisor should have the holes filled up.

In the United States Circuit Court at Pittsburg, on Tuesday, Judge M'Ken nan overruled a motion for a new trial in the case of John D. Etzwiler, of Millersburg, this county, convicted of having in his possession counterfeit notes of the United States with intent to utter the same. R. the bootblack arrested some time since on a charge of stealing a railroad ticket and a small amount of money from Phil Dougherty's restaurant, had a hearing yesterday, and although he strongly protested his innocence he was committed in default of $500 bail to await a trial at the next term of court. Not Dead Yet.

Mrs. Jemima Wol gemuth, whose death from her injuries was announced in our paper of Tuesday, was alive thia morning, and her physician has not yet abandoned all hope of her recovery. She seemed in very good spirits, and if mortification can be prevented, may ultimately recover. She is doing very well, better, in fact, than could reasonably be expected. A Brave Act.

Thia morning a horse and wagon belonging to the Peipher line went dashing along Market street at a fearful rate of speed, and when near Fourth street, the team was captured by James Hughes, who after being dragged some distance succeeded in stopping it, and delivered it to the driver. The act was witnessed by a umber of persons, and was highly commended. Gored by a Bull. On Tuesday evening as Mrs. Bricker, an aged lady of Lisburn, Cumberland county, was passing along the public road between Lautz's mill and her house, she was at taked by a bull (belonging to Mr.

Floyd) who pushed her against and over a fence, and inflicted an ugly gash of five inches in length upon one of her limbs. It seems that the animal had escaped from a field into a road. The wounded lady was conveyed to her home, where she is receiving proper attention. Last evening two colored men, employees of the Jones House, engaged in an altercation. The parties, whose names are Henry Islands and William Welker, had a difficulty in the course of which the former called the latter a liar, when Welker threw a tumbler at Islands, which struck him on the arm.

He then sent another one on the same errand, which cut Islands on the back of the head. A third tumbler missed the mark and went out the window. Islands then made a charge of assault and battery against Welker and the latter entered bail in the sum of $300 for his appearance at the next term of court to answer. Perry County Affairs From the Perry county Advocate and Press we clip the following Fatal Accident On Saturday, the 18th inst, as Mr. Peter Sholly, of Rye township, this county, was on his wagon unloading wood, he slipped, and his foot catching in one of the standards, he fell to the ground on his head and shoulders, receiving such internal injury as to cause his death on the Monday following.

Mr. Sholly was only aboat thirty years of age. lie leaves a widow and four children to mourn his sudden death. Arm Crushed. On Monday evening of last week, Mr.

David Bitner, while engaged in boring posts with a machine driven by horse power, at the residence of John R. Boden, near Ickes burg, he slipped, and in throwing out his left arm it came in contact with the augur and both bones of the fore arm were crushed at the wrist joint. This' will render the wrist joint useless. We sympathize with Mr. Bitner in his misfortune.

dec5 3i) Mcgrapf). Presbyterian Assembly. Detroit. May 29. A memorial from the Presbytery of Brooklyn on the subject of women oc cupying pulpits of churches was answer ed as follows "That there is no neces sity for a change in the constitution of the Church, and the memorialists are referred to the deliverance of 1832, which expresses the judgment of this assem bly." This action declares that meet ings of women by themselves for con versation and prayer are entirely ap proved, but to teach and exhort and lead in prayer in public and promiscous assemblies is already forbidden to women in holy oracles.

This afternoon a report was presented proposing an overture to be sent to pres byteries, altering the constitution so as to provide distinctly for a limited term or service in eluersiiips. A minority report was presented declaring the sufficiency of the judicial decision already made. Both reports were tabled. The moderator, Dr. Nicolls, with Drs, Hatfield, Adams, Backus, Tryon, Edward and T.

Ralston Smith were ap pointed to consider and report next year upon methods on publicly recognizing persons received into membership in the church. After the usal vote of thanks and addresses the assembly was dissolved to meet in Baltimore the third Thursday in May, 1873. Hoists the Greeley Manner. Charleston. 8.

May 29. The Henublican. the oldest radical newspaper in South Carolina, thia evening hoists the banner of Greeley and Brown. It takes the ground that they are better Republicans than President Grant, and that their election will best promote the true interests or tnenepuo lican party. It also declares that hence forward only honest and capable Re publicans must be elected to the offices or the Btate government.

The FInchback Republican. Pinchback'a Republican Convention nominated Warmouth for Governor and Pinchback for Lieutenant Governor, Xtesolulions were passed indorsing the administration of Warmouth, and the convention adjourned to meet on the 19th of June at Baton Rouge. Afterthe adjournment Pinchback made a speech, stating that he would support the Phil adelphia nominees at all hazards. WASHINGTON. the treaty.

Washington, May 20. Secretary Fish to day received infor mation from London in relation to the supplemental article of the Treaty of wasmngton, and made it known id the President. Correspondence is in progress between the two governments, and the British ministry are acting with caution in the premises. wnatever may be the ultimate dispo sition of the additional article, it is cer tain that up to five o'clock this afternoon there had been no definite response from the British Government. Much interest is expressed in Executive, diplomatic and other circles, and an unusually large number of telegrams passed between the two countries to day.

the ku kltjx bill, President Grant. with all the members of his Cabinet, was at the caDitol for several hours to dav in conference with leading Senators and members of the Mouse concerning the nassaere of tne Kuklux, civil rights and enforcement bills. It was rumored that the supplemental article to the Washington Treaty was also under consideration, but there is reason) to believe thatitwas not discussed. Republicans in Congress are manifestly conscious or tne fact that they nave made a grave mistake in passing the amnesty bill and then fixing an early day for adjournment before the three important measures above mentioned were passed. Tbe Southern Outrage Committee to day authorized Judge Poland to report the Ku Klux bill, and to amend it with the civil rights bill.

He will, therefore, make another effort to pass these two measures. The Democratic majority in the House is sufficiently large to filli buster sucess iuiiy against the passage of anv of these bills until Monday next, the day agreed upon for the adjournment. THE ENFORCEMENT BILL Against which the Democrats in a solid column filibustered to day, cannot pass because it is within the cover of one fifth to prevent the passage of any bill which cannot command a two third vote to suspend the rules. We suggest that you take either of two courses which may recommend itself to you as the best. First to nom inate at once, at your meeting, candi dates for President and Vice President; or, second, to call a meeting of representative men, to make nominations at Steinway Hall, on some day not later than the 27th June. We will pledge ourselves to heartly co operate with you in such action or any otner course you may adopt to secure the end of placing a ticket fn the neid mat snail tully represent the principles embodied in the platform adopted by the Reunion and Reform Convention recently held at Cincinnati.
