Guest so-foists: Oct 31, Ted Casher. Nov. 1, Ed Saindon. Set aside the next three evenings, jazz fans, because important groups are visiting Cambridge for a single evening each. Soprano saxophonist Dave Liebman gets things started at the Regattabar tonight, and the Liebman quintet that sounded so strong on its 1995 visit is now a foursome, with guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Tony Marino, and drummer Jamey Had dad still aboard.

Nicholas Payton, who follows Liebman into the Regattabar tomorrow, 617-876-7777, still has a quintet, which in its last local visit surrounded the best of the young I I itfitm i iMi iMmnmn.mi straight-ahead trumpeters with similarly talented sidemen who followed Payton's lead in putting a modern spin on classic material. Saturday night concludes the one-nighter cycle at the Dante Alighieri Cultural Center in Kendall Square, 617-868-3172, as multi-reed master Marty Ehrlich brings his Dark Woods Ensemble to the area for the first time. This is Ehrlich's chamber group, a trio in which his saxes, flutes and clarinets merge with Eric Fried-lander's cello and Mark Helias' bass in delicately probing creations.
