mouth's Ivy League showdown with Harvard next Saturday. The Big Green lost. Dartmouth ran up against a tough Lehigh eam looking to make its season, collapsed in the fourth quarter, and lost, 46-26. i The Big Green's unbeaten streak longest in the land and second best in Division 1-AA was snapped at 22-0-1. Dartmouth's win streak was stopped at 15.

lit was the first time Dartmouth had lost since Sept. 30, 1995 when Cornell beat the Big Green, 24-19, in Hanover. It was the most 'points Dartmouth had given up since a 49-7 loss Penn in 1987. i "They kicked our butts today," said Dart- mouth' coach John Lyons. "The only thing that 'really matters is how we respond from here.

We've got to play a team now that beat those Iguys. We'll see what we're all about as a football team." 'Dartmouth still takes its perfect 3-0 Ivy record into the Harvard game and is 5-1 overall, i Lehigh improved to 3-4. I The- Big Green gave up 450 yards of total 'offense while gaining 227 yards themselves. No i team had rushed for 100 yards against the Big i Green before yesterday and tailback Rabih Abdullah alone ran for 186 yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Phil Stam-baugh was 27 for 37 and 272 yards passing, i Five times Dartmouth turned the ball over two on fumbles and three on interceptions.

And I then there was the fourth quarter, i "Thgy extremely well and our defense played extremely poorly," Lyons said. "We missed tackles, gave up big plays and then lit all feU in the fourth quarter. We lost our poise." i Trailing, 22-19, at halftime, Dartmouth took i the lead itf the third period on a 1-yard run by I Peter Sellers: It was still Dartmouth, 26-25, en- "tering.the fourth, but Lehigh was on the go. I Threes njinutes in, Abdullah scored his third 'touchdown from 1 yard out and it was 33-26. i Lehigh -stalled its next drive when Sam 1 Brinley intercepted Sellers with 9:12 left.

1 Dartmouth held for three downs and it was 1 4th and 11 from the Big Green 32. Lehigh coach Kevin Higgins thought about i punting, but he wasn't confident his punter could put it inside the 10. Lehigh called for a ilong pass. And Dartmouth had it covered. I Instead', Stambaugh found tight end R.J.

Ryan, a junior out of Milton and Boston College 1 High, open underneath. i Ryan put a move on and got past one de- fender and was on his way to a 21-yard gain and 1 the biggest first down of the game. i Three plays later Abdullah scored from the 12 and the rout was on. i i "You don't deserve to win the game when give up fourth and lis," Lyons said. It had been quite run.

"It really is an accomplishment to go that long without a loss," Lyons said. "Particularly i when everyone is gunning for you. This year we were finding ways to win. It wasn't always pret- 1 ty. But we ran out of bullets today." Menick, fumbled at the 33, but he would end up setting a record for carries as he ran 42 times for 125 yards.

The Tigers mounted a sustained drive that was culminated by Alex Sierk's 36-yard field goal 6:25 into the game. Then the Crimson's Nathan Dean sailed a snap on the ensuing punt over Giampaolo's head, he fielded it and kept running into the end zone to lift the Tigers to a 5-0 lead just 1:55 later. Before the half, Giampaolo found the range on a 22-yard field goal, and things bogged down and Nakielny left the field with just one completion in 15 attempts for a minus-l-yard total. Nakielny's third pass in the second quarter, on a third and 10, was completed to Ray Canoje. He fumbled, and it was recovered by the Crimson's Jay Snowden.

After Rich Linden (16 of 31 for 216 yards) found Terence Patterson for an 11- yard gain to the 22, the Crimson's drive ended when Ryan Damien picked off a Linden pass in the end zone. The fates continued to twist in the chilled breezes, and this time the Crimson were on the receiving end when a Todd Helfrich snap went out of the end zone and it was a 5-5 standoff. The Tigers' Nakielny found Ryan Crowley on a bomb that he hauled in at the 30, went past defender Mike Madden and finished off a 65-yard scoring play for a 12-8 lead 1:37 into the fourth quarter. Then it was Linden's turn for the big play, as he rolled right, saw Colby Skelton open in the right flat and hit him. Skelton cut back through traffic and turned it into a 62-yard gain to the 7.

The Crimson settled for Giampaolo's wobbly 21-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 12- 11 with 7:55 remaining in regulation. Nakielny promptly fumbled the snap at his 27, setting up Giampaolo's career best 43-yarder with 5:20 left. "I saw the high snap," said Giampaolo, "and I just had to make sure I hit it hard and my timing was right." liflTffil IF1 Mike Giampaolo started 0llt "ras '0Ilg aI1C' s'I)Py UiuiuiUKJ tday in Harvard Stadium dashing into his end zone with an errant snap on a punt to take a safety, and he never got the ball on a later punt when the snap went off a linebacker's leg. Then everything turned into a ray of sunshine for the Crimson as Giampaolo kicked two of his four field goals in the fourth quarter and unloaded one final punt into the end zone to just about dash Princeton's hopes. When time ran out the Crimson (5-1, 3-0 Ivy League) had escaped with a 14-12 triumph over the Tigers (4-2, 1-2) to set up a summit meeting with previously unbeaten Dartmouth (5-1, 3-0) in Hanover, N.H., Saturday.

Harvard is unbeaten in the Ivy heading into the game for the first time since 1981, and, even though the Big Green's unbeaten streak ended yesterday in 46-26 defeat to Lehigh, they're without a loss in the league; it's a matchup of the only two without a blemish. The Tigers had 17 yards in total offense in the second quarter, and quarterback Harry Nakielny completed just three of 23 passes in the rain until the final, desperate drive when he doubled his completions. The Tigers gained just 153 yards in total offense, the Crimson 279. The Crimson won because the breaks evened out in the end and Giam-paolo's 43-yard kick after a high snap but perfect placement by Jared Chupaila made it through the uprights with 5:20 left. "We knew it would be a hard, physical game and certainly the weather conditions countributed to that," said Crimson coach Tim Murphy.

"More than anything, our kids willed this win. We were determined not leave that field without a victory." The halftime score was Princeton 5, Harvard 3. The tempo was established early when the Crimson's durable tailback, Chris MIT, 16-13 Jose Raymond 12 run (Paul D'As-coli kick) Andrew Macaione 16 pass from Dan Maurer (pass failed) John Andrewes 20 pass from Josh Norse (Bryan Sinatra rush) Dave Lundell 24 field goal Attendance: 435.
