SEPTEMBER24.2000 The uos'fON Sunday Globe ColBege tfootltoaiS Close call goes Crimson's way i iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiii in. iL ending after he endured five losses by a total of 18 points last season and a 2-point setback to Holy Cross last week. "We lost a real tough one here last year (17-10), we lost a real tough one to Penn on the last play of the game, we lost on the last play of the game to Yale, so to come out on top is a real great feeling," said Murphy. This 100th meeting of the schools produced 1,128 yards of total offense. Harvard racked up 586 and had to do it with fifth-string tailback Nick Palazzo lugging the football at the end because of injuries.

Webber, taking over this season from All-Ivy first-teamer James Perry, threw for 356 yards (32 for 51), while tailback Mike Malan picked up 190 yards rushing. But, said Brown coach Phil Es-tes, all the offense in the world couldnt make up for what he perceived as a nonexistent second-half defense. Asked what happened to his team's tackling over the final 30 minutes, Estes replied, "I didnt see it There wasnt any. The guys who were supposed to make the big plays didnt" The same could not be said for Rose, who had a total of just six varsity passes going into the season, or for Morris. Rose, a junior, was beaten out for the starting job by sophomore Barry Wahlberg Syracuse running back Dee Brown attempts to pull away from East Carolina defender Devone Claybrooks (top left).

Big East roundup Defense helps Miami blast Mountaineers It was the Wildcats' Day against Holy Cross, but came in late in that game to direct two scoring drives. Yesterday, he went to the air 38 times, completing 24 passes, 10 to Morris and seven to KyleCremarosa. When Harvard had to retain possession in the final four minutes, Morris showed his mettle. Before his big catch at the Brown 35, he had gained 11 yards for a first down to the Brown 48, but had to leave the field because of leg cramps. It was a freak little thing, but there was no question I'd come back in," said Morris.

1 never thought our game plan was set up to produce two records, but we got the big plays when we needed to. And Carl really made my job easy," said Rose. Brown, which beat San Diego in its opener last week, 36-20, had haJftime momentum after All-Ivy tailback Malan plowed through a traffic jam at the left sideline and outraced a half-dozen Crimson-faced defenders for a 73-yard touchdown and 10-point bulge. Harvard, still down 10 44 seconds into the fourth quarter, then went wild, rnaking up for its litany of tough defeats with three consecutive tallies in a span of 5:39. Tve been waiting for this for a long time," said a beaming Rose.

Greg Smith made his first start at quarterback with Brian Mann sidelined after suffering a concussion last week. Smith had the Big Green on the move.

On one early possession, he hit Damien Roomets a sophomore out of Sudbury, who had a monster game for 54 yards over the middle. On the next play, from the UNH 12, Reggie Belhomme fumbled. A couple of possessions later, Roomets caught a pass and was headed for a score but lost the ball and UNH recovered in the end zone. Roomets got that one back with an 8-yard touchdown catch with 1:52 left, making it 35-7. After a UNH fumble, Smith hit Matt DeLulis for a 10-yard touchdown pass and it was 35-14 at halftime.

Peterson had another touchdown for UNH in the third quarter and Roomets had his second in the fourth. Smith was 28 for 47 passing with three touchdowns. Roomets shattered the Dartmouth record with 17 receptions for 201 yards. The old mark of 1 1 catches was shared by three players, "And a lot of those were tough routes," said Dartmouth coach John Lyons. "He was running inside and was getting whacked." UNH coach Sean McDonnell was not happy with his team's 14 penalties for 134 yards.

"As I told them after the game, now we have to raise the bar," McDonnell said. "JMU's an away game, a nationally-ranked team, and the defending conference champions. It didnt help West Virginia (2-1, 1-1) that quarterback Brad Lew- is had his worst outing and Avon Cobourne, the Big East's leading rusher, sat out the game with a sprained ankle.

Dorsey was 22 of 33 for 291 yards and no interceptions. Miami broke the game open with 17 third-quarter points. Howard Clark returned an interception 29 yards for a 28-10 lead midway through the period. On the Mountaineers' next pos-. session, Leonard Myers, who lier returned a second-quarter in- terception 25 yards for a score, stripped the ball from West Virginia receiver Phil Braxton.

The Wildcats are 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 and next face James Madison in Harrisonburg, Saturday. Dartmouth drops to 0-2 with its Ivy opener Saturday at Pennsylvania. Dartmouth moved the ball but was hurt by turnovers. And the Big Green bad all kinds of trouble stopping UNH. UNH, often taking advantage of its speedy receivers, scored touchdowns the first five times it had the ball en route to a 35-0 lead.

Sophomore tailback Stephan Lewis scored three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Lewis ran 21 times for 100 yards and also was UNlTs leading receiver with five catches for 95 yards.
