She spent three months last year in El Salvador studying Mandarin, one of the largest sweatshops in the country, which makes clothing for Fruit of the Loom and The Gap. "In the sweatshops of El Salvador, I saw young women working in very inhumane conditions experiencing severe violations of dignity, of self-esteem, and of human rights," said Lopman.

For example, women often were not allowed to use the bathroom, were given only polluted water to drink, and were made to stand 12 to 14 hours per day, she said. The pay rate of 43 cents per hour is low even by FJ Salvador's standards, and women are forced to skip meals in order to have money to bring home to their families, she said.
