Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America, the two-day Kraig Ohlmg was lost to the activities are being sponsored and his teammates, not to mention the coaches, were ecstatic would be an understatement. But undermining Ashby's happiness was the wish that he could have been a part of the game. "I really wanted to be in there," he said as we talked to him. And though he was not battling physically for Albany, we believe his mere presence has done a lot for the locals. Ashby is, and will be, a strong part of the Bulldogs' bid for grid supremacy this season whether or not he's in the lineup but we sure hope he is! Blind-Side Tackles Are Rough Many a football fan has seen awesome incidents of a tackier hitting an unaware quarterback, resulting in a loss of yardage and a shaken-up signal-caller.

Last week we were "granted" a taste of what the blind-side tackle feels like. And it doesn't feel too good. We were visiting the Lebanon high school footballers for the relatively soft job of photographing the Soft is one thing it was not! As we were discussing the setup for the picture with the Warriors' new head coach, Gleascn Eakin, a gung-ho gridder sailed into our backside, from head to foot. Not knowing whether the world had come to an end or Just that particular part of the earth where we were standing, there was little to do but realize the pain. We recovered with but a few bumps and bruises, and a greater respect for those who are on the receiving end of a tackle.

This Could Be Albany's Year It's been a long time since the Bulldogs were considered a major threat in the Oregon high school grid wars. But this may be the Bulldogs' turn. Depth seems to be the major problem with the 1966 Albany eleven, but head coach Fred Siler and his assistants are working as hard as ever with younger players. Experience is the key to success, and hard work is the way to get experience. Throw in a lot of spirit, which Albany has plenty of, and you've got a top-notch team the Bulldogs.

The Oregon Journal's first poll of the season named the Blue and Gold as the number 10 team in the state, and The Oregonian had the Bulldogs in the number 11 spot, tied with Jefferson of Portland, Milwaukie and Washington of Portland. Time will tell if Albany is to advance in the ranking, but the rankings are far from being the important thing. Molding a good club, and the Bulldogs have the material, and keeping the spirit of winning and playing hard every game must be maintained. Albany tangles with Crater high school Friday night on the Comets' home grounds at Central Point. Crater opened the season with a 344 victory over Sweet Home last week, giving strong indication that the teams from the Southern Conference are as tough in 1966 as they have been in the past.

Last year, the Bulldogs had little difficulty with the Comets, defeating them 26-6. But that was on Albany's home grounds. A reputation as a tough football team is tough to uphold because other squads start concentrating on you. But an even tougher opponent is yourself. Overconfidence can defeat a club much easier than an opponent.

We think our Bulldogs have got the manpower, the coaching, and the will to win. With support from the citizenry, such as there was at the Albany-Corvallis game last week, Albany may surprise a lot of people, even themselves. The Prognosticarors Return Collegiate football begins its first full weekend of grid action Saturday, and as the teams take the field the Democrat-Herald's awesome quintet of gridiron predictors begin their job of picking the winners. Last year, Maun, Sanderson captured the honors by finishing the season with a 123-60-7 win-loss-tie record. He's back to defend his title.

His opponents include Elmo Smith, Ralph Lee, Al Davenport, and yours truly. A total of 20 games are on tap for the famous five, and we invite our readers to participate with us in the predicting of "the winners in the selected games. The predictions will be staged each week.
