K16 TrWBOSTON SUNDAY GLORE SEPTEMBER 19, 1999 College football I Past glory can't save AOnutemen DELAWARE, 2940 ranked opponent in school history. "They have an excellent team, but one of the things they're going to find out is that it's hard to win every single year, especially when you're the hunted," said Talley. UMass quarterback Todd Bank-head completed 25 of 38 passes for 261 yards and a touchdown to set the school's career touchdown mark, but he was intercepted twice and downed for a safety with 14:21 left in the third quarter, one play after Minuteman Jerard White had intercepted Villano-va's Chris Boden. UMass wide receiver Adrian Zullo tied a school record with 11 catches (for 125 yards), but he was the team's only consistent deep threat UMass running back Marcel Shipp had 22 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown for his 14th consecutive 100-yard game, but he had just 23 yards in the first half, when UMass trailed by as much as 21-0 its largest deficit under second-year coach Mark Whipple. The biggest thing is that you can't hand people who are ready to play turnovers that aren't forced," said Whipple, whose team must regroup for Division 1-A Toledo Saturday.

"The interception by David Heck-ard with 3:43 left in the first half was rallied to close to 23-14 on a 7-yard run by Shipp, capping a 15-play, 89-yard drive. Shannon kicked a career-best 46-yard field goal to put the Wildcats ahead by 12, but UMass brought it to 26-21 with 2:03 left on a 39-yard pass from Bankhead to Shipp. UMass got the ball back and reached the Villanova 34 with 11 seconds left, but on first down, center Maikel Miret's snap sailed over the head of Bankhead. Bankhead managed to track down the ball and, under a heavy rush, completed a 14-yard pass to Shipp with three seconds left. But rather than throw to the end zone on the last play, Bankhead attempted a short pass to wide receiver Sean Higgins, who was at the 12-yard line.

Villanova linebacker Aaron Weems batted it away, and the Wildcats stormed the field in celebration. "On the last play, I thought they were going to drop back in the zone, and they did," said Bankhead. "I thought I'd hit Sean across the middle, and maybe he could run it in. I was just a little late on the throw." "We had a chance at the end, but that kind of would have been highway robbery," Whipple said. "Those guys deserved to win.

They played harder. They played better." By Joe Burris GLOBE STAFF I VILLANOVA, Pa. The University of Massachusetts' run HI. to an unlikely Division 1-AA national championship last season was so compelling, so dramatic, it overshadowed the fact that in many of the Minute-men's games, a thin line separated triumph from defeat. UMass outscrapped, outhustled, and outschemed its foes, and often one amazing play, one stroke of fortune, or one lapse by the adversary led the Minutemen to victory.

They had better return to that approach soon. Consider the reputation of the second-ranked Minutemen in the wake of yesterday's 26-21 Atlantic 10 defeat to 22d-ranked Villanova, and you know that what Wildcats coach Andy Talley said is being echoed by each of UMass's upcoming foes. "Mass. was the national champion last year," said Talley, "but that was last year." Ducarmel Augustin had 13 carries for 122 yards and a touchdown, Casey Shannon booted three field goals, and the Villanova defense registered a safety, four turnovers, and seven sacks as the Wildcats beat the highest- V1I1AN0VA, 26-21 at VKaeove, Pa. i IMI 7 7 21 12-11 1 II I 21 VU Casey Harmon 21 held goal.

Shooting yourself three times is another. The University of New Hampshire allowed 13 points off three first-half fumbles and bowed to James Madison, 35-28, yesterday at sunny Cowell Stadium, spoiling the Wildcats' home opener. UNH tied it at 28 with 2:07 remaining when quarterback Ryan Day scored on a 1-yard sneak. Then the Dukes put together a marvelous 68-yard drive, capped when Curtis Kea-ton scored his third touchdown from the 2 with just 20 seconds left. James Madison is an up-and-coming unit under first-year, no-nonsense coach Mickey Matthews.

JMU started the season by getting starched by Division 1-A preseason No. 13 Virginia Tech, 47-0, but returned to form last week, beating Northeastern, 29-21. "We came here to get a job done, and we did it," said Matthews. James Madison junior quarterback Charles Berry, a transfer from the University of North Carolina, completed 15 of 30 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Senior tailback Keaton, the Dukes' top rusher last season with 1,064 yards, carried 32 times for 161 yards and 2 TDs and caught two passes for 33 yards and a score.

"I had good blocking all day," said Keaton. "This was another team win. We do it all as a team." UNH got solid performances from Dan Curran (29 carries, 121 yards, 2 TDs) and Day (20 of 35, 268 yards, TD). UNH got on the board first at 4:50 of the opening quarter when Curran busted up the middle for a 20-yard score. The 79-yard drive was highlighted by Day passes of 34 and 14 yards to Jermaine Washington.

The Dukes then scored 20 straight points. A Curran miscue was recovered on the Wildcats' 37 by Timm Carper, and six plays latr er Mike Glover booted a 21-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead. Three plays after another UNH fumble was recovered by Derrick Lloyd, Keaton ran it in from the 6.

The other UNH fumble led to Mike Glover's 32-yard field goal and a 20-7 second-quarter lead. The Wildcats got a lift when Day and Kamau Peterson combined on a 20-yard scoring pass as the second half was winding down. UNH went ahead, 21-20, when Curran capped a nine-play, 80-yard, third-quarter drive with a TD run from the 20. JMU answered with 8 points on a 2-yard TD run by Robert Carson and conversion pass from Berry to Ernest Payton. After Day's late 1-yard plunge, the Dukes made their clutch drive.

A gallant UNH team played a nervous first half and paid the price. Bears an upset win over the 19th-ranked Spiders in Orono, Maine. But after that, the Crimson went to work as linebacker Isaiah Kacy-venski picked off Mark Stoutenberg's pass at the Columbia 29 and returned it 2 yards. After Jones picked up 11 yards, he shed tacklers for the final 16 yards of the drive to create a 7-7 tie 8:44 into the first quarter. The Crimson then scored again, Jones sweeping left to pick up 40 yards to the 10. He ended the march by lugging it 5 yards for a 14-7 lead with 3:04 left in the opening quarter. Mike Giampaolo's 30-yard field goal staked the Crimson to a 17-7 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Jones started to his left and reversed to Patterson, who came around from the left side and ended up making a gorgeous tut-back at the 8 for a 30-yard scoring run and 24-7 lead. By JoeConcannon GLOBE STAFF Just 12 months ago, the players on Har vard's football team straggled toward the buses parked outside Columbia's Wien Stadium and filed in for the long ride home, wondering what had gone wrong. Coming off a glittering 9-1 season and its first umblemished Ivy League campaign since the circuit was formalized, the Crimson had been blown away, 24-0, in a struggle that set the tone for an inconsistent season. If yesterday's game against the Lions in Harvard Stadium is any indication, the Crimson may be on target for another run at a championship. There was a 41-yard run behind a block by tailback Troy Jones, a reverse that went for Terence Patterson's touchdown, and a 49-yard strike to freshman Carl Morris for late breathing room. Still, the early moments provided a few flashbacks as the Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and the Crimson's first scoring thrust was thwarted when tailback Chris Menick's option pass to Wilford was picked off by Chris Nugent in the end zone. Otherwise "They outplayed us.
