Harvard almost had another seconds before the half, but coughed up the ball at the Brown 8 when receiver Colby Skelton was hammered by linebacker Ernest Dean and defensive end Matt Simmons recovered. But that was just a momentary reprieve for Brown, and Harvard coach Tim Murphy, whose team ended a four-game losing streak to Brown, sensed it "At 10-0, 1 was a little concerned because this was starting to look like a typical Harvard-Brown game of the last couple of years," said Murphy, in reference to 31-7 and 47-8 defeats.

"But at 10-7 I really felt we were going to win, because quite frankly, we had made so many mistakes, especially offensively, and we were still in the game." Harvard took the opening kickoff of the second half and sliced through Brown's soon-to-be-tiring defense, going 80 yards in eight plays with Menick scoring untouched from the 5. Late in the third quarter, Menick picked up 41 of his team's 43 yards on another scoring drive, accounting for 28 of them on an up-the-middle rush for the touchdown that put Harvard ahead, 21-10. And when a Brown field goal attempt fizzled on the ensuing possession, Harvard was home free as Brown's depleted offense struggled and its defense couldn't stop the run. "We would have had a better chance if not for our injuries, but give credit to Harvard. They were much the better team in the second half," said Brown coach Mark Whipple.

"We needed something to stop their momentum, but we never got it" No, the momentum was all Harvard's after the big second-quarter fumble recovery, and now the Crimson are on the verge of their first Ivy League title in a decade. ing behind by even more to upset-minded Brown, Harvard's football team got a big play from its defense, then rode the back of 201-yard rusher Chris Menick to a 27-10 victory before 3,188 Homecoming Day fans at rain-splattered Brown Stadium. The Crimson, off to their best overall start (7-1) since 1973 and best Ivy League start (5-0) since 1984, appeared on the ropes early as Brown dominated. A Tom Routt 24-yard field goal and a 22-yard scoring pass from James Perry to Sean Morey, a combination that burned Harvard's secondary repeatedly, had the home team and the crowd pumped up. And when Harvard had to punt on its next possession, Brown promptly marched to the Crimson 22 from where Perry hooked up with Morey for a first down to the 10.

But a holding penalty on the play did what the Harvard defense hadn't yet been able to do and on the next play, as he fought for yardage on a keeper, Perry was hit by cornerback Glenn Jackson, fumbled, and Crimson defensive back Clint Kollar recovered at the 26. From that moment on, Harvard and Menick, who scored three second half touchdowns, were too much to handle for Brown, whose offensive line lost tackle and co-captain Dan McClutchy to a knee injury on Brown's lone TD drive and then tackle Shelton Magee to another knee injury in the third quarter. Menick, who posted Harvard's sixth-best rushing yardage total in a game and is now 79 yards short of Eion Hu's record of 1,101 yards in a season, was immense after being held to 32 yards in the first half. The Crimson climbed back into the game right after Perry's fumble, marching 74 yards in nine plays, with scrambling quarterback Brion Stapp threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, and Holy Cross 5 took advantage of two key turnovers N.E. bating Lehigh, 20-14, yesterday in rOUndUp a Patriot League game at Bethlehem, Pa.
