Gumbel concedes he's still smarting from recent remarks by ABC News czar Roone Arledge in Vanity Fair that he only made a "half-assed" attempt to woo Gumbel because the "Today" host is "not even in the same league" with ABC stars.

"I still have the paperwork of the offer Roone made to me, and if I -ever wanted to publicize it, people would say, 'That's hardly half- says Gumbel, 48, whose CBS deal is worth a reported $25 million over five years. "To this day, I have no idea why said it. I remain disappointed he said it I would still say, in my opin- ion, he's the most important person in television in the last 50 years." Lisa McRee may be 'GMA' anchor Rumors are circulating again in New York that Lisa McRee, a news anchor at ABC-owned KABC in Los Angeles, is the top choice to succeed Joan Lunden, who steps down as a co-anchor of "Good Morning America" in early September. The trades earlier this month had McRee turn- ing down the job because she didn't want to move to New York, even though Disney chairman Michael Eisner is one of her fans, as is Alan Wurtzel, the ABC News senior vice president in charge of "GMA." An ABC News source Wednesday didn't discourage the latest rumors but insisted "no deal has been struck yet." It's not as if McRee hasn't been on ABC before: She was the first co-anchor, along with Aaron Brown, of the network's overnight news show, "World News when it debuted in January 1992. You need not share the glory with anyone, and if you sere there's nobody to share the blame." In the latest chapter of "The Bryant Gumbel Story," TVs notori- ously moody loner is about to tee it up for CBS News with a fall newsmagazine. Thus far, Gumbel has a time slot (9 p.m. Wednesday), an executive producer (Michael Rubin), and not much else not even a title.

"My preference changes daily," says Gumbel, who joined CBS March 13 after a 22-year run at NBC the last 15 as anchor of "Today." "So many are already taken. For those of you under 40, that was the nameof CBS's live interview show hosted by sainted newsman Edward R. Murrow from 1953 to '59. Thanks to then-breakthrough technology, Murrow chatted up celebs in their homes from CBS's New York studio. Don't bet the farm on "Person to Person," says CBS News chief An- drew Heyward.

"It's a great name from CBS history, but we don't want to come off as arrogant. It creates unfair expectations." Though loathe to discuss details, Gumbel says his show will have many live elements. "We won't just be live to be live, like ABC's 'PrimeTime Live' says it's live, when it's just live as a lead-in to taped pieces." One of the best interviewers in the business, Gumbel has always loved performing without a net.
