VV J. If ks 'Is)) i is BARBRA STREISAND A financial backer INSTITUTE Continued from Page Al regular basis, and there's no place that has devoted itself to the study of Jewish women." Streisand, the singer and film star who portrayed a young Jewish student in the 1983 film "Yentl," will swerve as the institute's honorary chairwoman. I "As a Jewish woman, I have always been bothered by negative stereotypes about us, and in my films I Have always tried to show Jewish women in a positive light," she said in a statement released yesterday. 1 The institute will not be an academic department of the university or offer classes, said Reinharz. It will Concentrate on research, publishing books and articles and organizing regular conferences on the changing of Jewish women.

It also will host lectures open to the public, add-ed Reinharz. i Research topics will vary from arts to business to aspects of Jewish family life, including the growing riumber of Jewish women who marry non-Jewish men, or pursue careers and remain single longer. Reinharz said the institute's agenda will be agreed on later this year, following a gathering of Jewish scholars at the university. 1 She said the institute will not needs." When asked whether an institute sponsored by Hadassah, a group known for its generally liberal stands on domestic social issues, would have difficulty doing research on more conservative sides of Judaism, both Post and Reinharz said they were not worried. "We're going to look at all of Judaism's religious and political streams," Post said.

Many agree the institute will be a way for Hadassah to increase its profile and perhaps its membership. The organization, founded as a Zionist group in 1912, is today one of the largest volunteer organizations for Jewish women in world, with chapters in 35 countries. But over the past several years, participation in Hadassah by young women has dropped significantly, giving the group the image of being a club for grandmothers. "Hadassah was once largely composed of suburban housewives who'd been married for most of their lives," said Barry Kosmin, a director with the Institute of Jewish Policy Research in London, who produced another report for Hadassah in 1993. "This seems like an attempt by the group at modernization and to understand the younger generation.

This strikes me as a positive move on their part." 12 From $40. Hair today, gone tomorrow! SHULAMIT REINHARZ Will direct new institute compete with the university's Jewish women's studies program, which offers a master's degree. Other institutions have begun similar programs of research and study. The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City offers a master's degree and the Reconstruction-ist Rabbinical College, a small religious school in Pennsylvania, recently created the Center for Women's and Gender Studies. The seed for the institute at Brandeis was planted two years ago, when the university produced a Ha-dassah-sponsored report on the fu- ture of American Jewish women.

The report, titled "Voices for Change," found that a growing number of American-born Jewish women were finding Judaism less relevant. "We really needed to give a gift to the Jewish people for the 21st century," said Marlene E. Post, Ha-dassah's national president. "We realize that we have been lacking pure academic research on Jewish women." Post added, "The Jewish woman has always been the fulcrum of the family. But if she chooses to be single, we need to know what she LOCATIONS: IN MA: Andovcr Boston Braintrce Brockton Burlington Cambridge Chelmsford Chestnut Hill Dan vers Frarningham Franklin Hanover Medford Needham Norwood Seekonk Swampscott Worcester IN CT: Glastonbury Vernon West Hartford IN RI: Warwick IN NH: Bedford North Hampton IN NY: New York City Larchmont 0 50 OFF er Be TTHP Summ st Dresse Suits Sportswear, i Jf I A ill 45 A "95 '4 E3 MtlliPfli If MtiiiiOilVl'l AO AO mm in m-n 50' 50oa OFF OFF OFF OFF Summer's New Breezy Famous Maker Career Dresses Misses Petites Women Soft prints, lovely silks and linens in chemises, wedges, sarong looks, coatdresses, long full styles, flippy looks, shirtdresses, tunics and two-piece styles.
