Harvard's Chris Menick bulls his way for a few extra yards while caught in the clutches of the Cornell Midi bath is raJiYematim too confident with the way his Spiders warmed up and had trouble holding on to passes before yesterday's game with University of New Hampshire. He didn't feel a whole lot better after his team squandered a 7-0 lead and fell into a 13-7 hole at halftime.

"It kind of felt like we were getting run out of the ballpark," he said. And then the Spiders turned it around. They handled the wet and nasty weather, and the Wildcats. They played ball control on the Wildcats, who like to play ball control. Quarterback Jimmie Miles passed for a couple of touchdowns and the Spider defense, helped by UNH's problems holding onto the ball, shut down the Wildcats for a 22-13 win.

Richmond improved to 4-2 overall and continues a $wing through New England next Saturday at Maine. UNH dropped to 2-3 and has Northeastern at home Saturday. The game did not count in the Atlantic 10 standings. It was a tale of two halves. Two halves for Miles, who was 0 for 6 passing in the first half with two interceptions.

And was 7 for 7 in the second half with the two touchdowns. I Two halves for UNH tailback Jerry Azumah, who had 127 yards on 13 carries in the first half, which put him over (he mark for the fourth year he became the only 1-AA runner to accomplish that feat. He carried only eight times in the second half as the UNH offense fizzled, i One constant was UNH's difficulty holding onto the ball. The Wildcats lost an Azumah fumble early in the game at he Richmond 26. And lost another late.

Several times there were problems with the exchange between center Jeff Hayes and quarterback Tim Cramsey. Several other times receivers failed to hold onto Cramsey passes. 'I "That's something we haven't been doing all year," said UNH coach Bill Bowes of the bad snaps. "It puts you behind in down and distance. It's hard to overcome that.

Give them credit, they did a better job holding onto the football than we did. They did a much better job." i Richmond broke on top when Miles finished a 58-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. UNH got that one back on a 41-yard Azumah touchdown on a double peverse on the first play of the second quarter. UNH went ahead, 13-7 the extra point snap was botched on a Cramsey to Jermaine Washington 13-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds left in the half. The Spiders tied it 13-13 -they also had problems on the conversion on their third play of the second half, a 20-yard touchdown pass from Miles to Matt Davis.

Richmond went back in front on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Miles connected with Dwaune Jones for a 28-yard touchdown on a fourth-and-3 play. Jeff Falkowski made the kick and it was 20-13. Azumah started UNH's next series with a 21-yard run to the Richmond 43. And Cramsey fumbled the snap and the Spiders recovered. UNH went three plays and out on its next two series.

And on the one after that, after being backed up to his 9 by a holding call, Cramsey was pulled down in the end zone for a safety by Richmond tackle Marc Megna, a senior out of Fall River, Mass. going in the third quarter on three runs by Menick totaling 40 yards, but had to settle for John Patton's 21 -yard field goal. After Isiah Kacy-venski intercepted a Mike Hood pass, Patton missed a 25-yard field goal-There was enough excitement in the next few moments to whet the appetites of both sides oh this wet, chilled afternoon. The game's next play saw Aron Natale tip a Hood pass, and defensive back Glenn Jackson caught it and returned it 41 yards for a 16-6 lead on Patton's extra point. Before anybody could get overly excited, Bush took the ensuing kickoff and, virtually untouched, raced 87 yards to cut the deficit to 16-12.

On the Crimson's next possession split end Terence Patterson swung around from the left side to take a reverse and raced 60 yards up the right sideline for a 6-3 lead at 11:14 of the quarter. He'd scored on a 62-yard reverse a year ago at Dartmouth and is a distinct deep threat for the Crimson. The Big Red failed to capitalize on a third-down play from the 6 after Justin Bush ran it 48 yards to the Crimson 11, but after a loss of 17 for illegal use of hands McCombs kicked a 40-yard field goal to create a 6-6 halftime tie. The Crimson got Glenn Jackson (right) is about to and Yale i yf3; feci By Joe Concannon GLOBE STAFF It'd been down for the count, a Harvard team that went unbeaten in the Ivy League a year ago. The Crimson were 0-3 entering yesterday's game vs.

Cornell, but maybe all it took was a good mud bath in Harvard Stadium and a rejuvenated Chris Menick. "People were losing respect for us," said Menick. "I knew we had the ability to do it It was just a matter of wanting it, and going out and proving it." So the Crimson slopped and slugged their way to a 19-12 victory, a win that left the Crimson with a 1-1 record among the Ivies and very much alive and kicking in the Order of the Ancient Eight, where there appears to be no dominant team. "After we graduated 16 guys last year," said captain and defensive tackle Brendan Bibro, "we had to mesh as a team, and that had to take some time." This was a surprisingly good game with a variety of big plays on a field that was pure slop in the second half after three days of occasionally torrential rains. The teams combined for more than 500 rushing yards, and Menick felt a sense of redemption after a penalty in the fourth quarter in last week's 17-12 setback against Lehigh stalled a Crimson drive.

He ran 39 times for 176 yards to move into third on the career list with 1,920. "You're really disappointed when it's self-inflicted," said first-year Big Red (2-2) coach Pete Man-gurian. "We had opportunities, and when you do you have to take advantage of them. We were in a situation where someone was going to come out of it 1-1 in the league and someone was going to come out 0-2. They made the big plays when they had to, and we didn't.

The bottom line is we turned the ball over, and didn't make big plays when we had to."
