C14 THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE OCTOBER 10, 1999 College Football Atlantic 10 roundup Crimsoi heartbroken Spiders edge URIonlate Kirchner kick CORNELL, 24-23 7 7 0-23 ASSOCIATED PRESS Doug Kirchner kicked a 30-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining yesterday to give Richmond a 41-38 victory over visiting Rhode Island. Richmond quarterback Jimmie Miles ran for 152 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 180 yards and a touchdown. The Spiders had 421 yards of total offense. Kirchner had missed two extra points before kicking the winning field goal. Richmond (3-3, 2-3 Atlantic 10) was slowed by four turnovers, including three fumbles that the Rams (0-5, 0-3) turned into 17 nailed the extra point for the lead, leaving Harvard with just 26 seconds to rally.

To its credit, Harvard didn't quit. Quarterback Brad Wilford (17 of 30, 183 yards) drove the Crimson to the 30, where, with four seconds left, Giampaolo, who had booted field goals of 20, 32, and 39 yards, tried what would have been a winner from 40 yards, but it was blocked. "I've really never been involved in a game like this before," said Murphy. "I cant remember in 21 years of coaching and 13 years as a head coach something like this happening. "Cornell deserved to win.

They deserved to win not necessarily because they were the better team, but when they absolutely had to make the plays, they made them." 1 The crushing loss overshadowed a brilliant Harvard ground attack that included Chris Menick (115 yards) and Chuck Nwokocha (110 yards) becoming the first two Crimson players to gain 100 or more yards in the same game since Eion Hu and Kweli Thompson against Colgate in 1995. 1 Harvard got rushing touchdowns from Nwokocha (11 yards) and Wilford (3), along with Giampaolo's three field goals, to take a 23-10 lead before Rahne and Cornell came storming back. "How do you top this?" asked Cornell coach Pete Mangurian. "This is even a little bit better than last week's come-from-be-hind 33-28 win at Brown. I had trouble expressing that win, so you can imagine what it's like this week.

We hung in there the whole game and did what we had to do when we had to do it. Right now, it doesn't get any better than this." Or, in Harvard's case, any worse. Rahne guides Cornell in the final minute ByJohnVellante GLOBE STAFF BfflfnTTn ITHACA, N.Y. For near-I sjmi ly 59 minutes yesterday, LaUlslUksJ Harvard's defense gave highly-touted Cornell quarterback Ricky Rahne all he could handle. Unfortunately for the Crimson, football games last 60 minutes, and Rahne, in the waning seconds, proved he's every bit as good as advertised.

Rahne took Cornell 58 yards in six plays with no timeouts, culminating the march with an 18-yard scoring strike to Keith Ferguson with just 26 seconds to play, to lift the undefeated Ivy League leaders (4-0) to a pulsating 24-23 win at Schoellkopf Field. This is one Harvard (2-2, 1-1 Ivy) thought it had in the win column and, coming on the heels of last week's final-play, 24-22 loss to Colgate, left the Crimson reeling. "It's somewhat devastating," said deject ed Harvard coach Tim Murphy. "From an emotional standpoint, let's face it, our kids played so hard. At times we played extremely well and it looked like we were in control.

This one really hurts." Rahne, beaten and bruised by Willie Al-ford, Ben Green, and. Isaiah KacyvensW in particular, completed 27 of 49 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns. He's now thrown for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns in four games. But yesterday, he saved his best for last. Harvard led, 23-17, when Cornell got its AIC, 56-14 WESTERN I TuWflifi Conf.

The Rams' David Jamison ran for four touchdowns. His 2-yard run tied the game at 38 with 2:04 remaining. For the Spiders, Paris Lenon returned a blocked extra point for 2 points and Cordell Roane had a 68-yard punt return for a TD. Rhode Island quarterback Ken Mastrole was 19 of 37 for 230 yards.

William Mary 45, Villanova 10 At Williamsburg, David Corley threw four touchdown passes to lead the Tribe to an easy win. Corley, a redshirt freshman, has started only two games for the Tribe (2-3, 2-1) but has thrown four touchdowns in each game. Jimmy Cerminaro's 13-yard interception return put the Tribe up, 28-10, with 8:04 remaining in the second quarter. Chris Boden was 20 of 36 with a touchdown and two interceptions for Villanova (3-3, 2-2). The Wildcats ran for only 89 yards on 32 carries.

The rout was highlighted by Shipp's four touchdowns and Todd Bankhead's two TD passes to Adrian Zullo.

That's the meat and potatoes of the debacle. "We didn't come out ready to play," said Gallup, who was dazed and confused. "We lost confidence. We played scared." For Northeastern, this goes as the worst loss in its 64-year history of playing football. The worst defeat before yesterday was a 56-0 drubbing by Eastern Michigan in 1969.

Offensively, the Huskies never threatened. They moved the ball over midfield only once to the 46-yard line in 16 possessions. They fumbled the ball away twice and threw six interceptions for a school-record eight turnovers. Garbage time began early. UMass pulled Bankhead (14 for 19, 194 yards, 2 interceptions) early in the second half, and Shipp (24 carries, 110 yards) followed after passing the century mark rushing.

"It was a chance for us to get a lot of guys, especially a lot of young guys, some playing time," said Whipple. One of those who made the most of his unexpected playing time was Shipp's understudy, sophomore Kevin Quinlan of Somer-ville, who rushed 24 times for 136 yards and a touchdown. "I was just happy to get into the game," said the former Maiden Catholic star. "I tried to make the most of my opportunity." There were plenty of opportunities for UMass yesterday. UMASS Continued from Page CI "We have no excuses," said Gallup. "I thought we were ready to play. But we didn't do anything to deserve to win. I take full blame. The 49-0 halftime score was the most points in a half at McGuirk Stadium and the most NU has allowed in a half. The 11 PATs were a school record. It was UMass's first shutout since beating Holy Cross, 51-0, Sept.

16, 1995. Shipp moved up to second on the all-time UMass rushing list with 3,966 yards; he also passed the barrier in all-pur (,.
