D14 THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE NOVEMBER 2, 1997 Eastern college football Harvard takes, over Ivy A Little! Three upset By Joe Concannon GLOBE STAFF lifflffliT HANOVER. N.H 1 WfWill'K i Conf. All Harvard 4-0 6-1 Dartmouth 3-1 5-2 Penn 3-1 4-3 Brown 2-2 5-2 Columbia 2-2 3-4 Princeton 1-3 4-3 Cornell 1-3 3-4 Yale 0-4 1-6 passing in the night in a 4-yard pass from Rich Linden 6:38 into the game, the Crimson regained the ball when Clint Killar returned an interception to the Harvard 38-yard line. Then Patterson made on his run. "On the reverse I saw two or three guys in the offensive line in front of me," said Patterson.

"I basically had my hand on their backs." The 11-catch total is third highest in Crimson history. "I have to tip my hat to our quarterback Rick Linden," said Patterson. "When he gets the ball to you like that, it's a big plus." Just 50 seconds into the second quarter, Linden led Patterson with a pass at the 25, which Patterson took into the end zone to complete the 45-yard play. "We had a game plan and the big play came our way." Mike Giampaolo's 22-yard field goal completed the unanswered Crimson scoring blitz just 4:37 into the second quarter, and the two missed field goal tries by Giampaolo later were moot. Even though the Crimson came out in shotgun formation, Menick carried 25 times for a tough net gain of 51 yards.

The Crimson compiled 309 yards of offense in the first half, but just 82 after intermission when the winds came up and neither offense could draw much blood. The Big Green feel they are still in the Ivy race. "There was a lot at stake," said Big Green coach John Lyons. "We didn't make the big plays when we had to." yesterday's occasional mist and wind that swept over soggy Memorial Field. There was Dartmouth (10-0 last season), which entered the game owning a share of the Ivy League lead with Harvard.

There were the Crimson, who showed three games ago at Cornell that the luster has returned to Cambridge in coach Tim Murphy's fourth season. The Crimson jumped on the Big Green in a devastating stretch of just more than six minutes in the first half, taking a 24-0 lead to the locker room. There were four scoring drives in just 15 plays within 6 minutes 23 seconds. The defenses and weather took over in the second half, and after a scoreless third and fourth quarters, the Crimson were heading home with their first shutout of Dartmouth in 56 years, having handed the Big Green their first blanking in 98 games. The Big Green (5-2, 3-1 Ivy League) were held to minus 15 yards rushing in the first half and just 173 yards of total offense in the game.

The Crimson (6-1, 4-0), now alone at the top in the Ivy, have three games to go (at Brown, Penn, at Yale), and are in their most successful campaign since 1984, when they went 5-0 in the league before losing their last two contests. "I think defensively we played about as well as we can play," said Murphy, whose words were reinforced by five Harvard interceptions of Peter Sellers passes. "The run those Dartmouth seniors have had may not be equaled," Murphy said of Dartmouth's 22-game unbeaten streak, which ended last week against Lehigh. "We've played outstanding defensive football. We didn't allow Cornell to cross the goal line.

We gave Columbia one and Princeton one. The team that ends up scoring defense champion probably is going to be the team with the crown." The offensive star was flanker Terence Patterson, who caught 11 passes for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns and swept around on a reverse from tailback Chris Menick for 62 yards down the sideline for a third score. After Patterson, a former high school option quarterback, scored on If lv at Wesleyan hands Williams first loss ASSOCIATED PRESS Jake Fay completed 16 of 31 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns as Wesleyan (6-1) handle ed Williams (6-1) its first loss, 28-14, rOlindUP yesterday in a Lit- tie Three showdown at Middletown, Conn.
