Boston Evening Globe Monday, November 21, 1977 OBITUARIES DEWEY STONE Dewey Stone, helped create state of Israel BROCKTON Dewey Stone, 77, a textile manufacturer and for many years a leader of the American Jewish community, died Saturday atr Brockton Hospital. He played a significant role in the creation of the State of Israel. Mr. Stone began his career while still in college, when his brother-in-law offered him a job at Harodite Finishing Co.

in North Dighton. Eventually, Mr. Stone became the chairman of the company's board. of director and expanded his interests to other textile businesses. He was active in many area and national Jewish organizations.

He led the operation in the United States to raise money for boats to take survivors of the concentration camps to Palestine, despite the British ban on such activity. It was one of Mr. Stone's companies that purchased the Exodus. In 1947, when votes were needed in the United Nations to secure the passage of the Palestine Partition Resolution, which created the State of Israel, Mr. Stone and his brother, Judge Harry K.

Stone, lobbied among the large number of Latin American delegates. Mr. Stone also was active in the elections of Presidents Truman and Kennedy. He organized substantial fund -raising efforts for Truman's 1948 campaign. In 1952, when John F.

Kennedy was running for the US Senate, Mr. Stone rented facilities in Boston and invited 250 Jewish leaders from Massachusetts to talk with Kennedy. He also arranged for Kennedy to speak at the 1960 convention of the Zionist Organization of America.4 For 27 years he was chairman of both the board of governors and the American committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, one of the world's foremost scientific institutions. He was the national chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, the United Jewish Appeal, and the Jewish Agency. He was a trustee of the Cardinal Cushing General Hospital in Brockton and the Truman Library in Independence, Mo.

Mr. Stone was born in Brockton and from Boston University in graduated 1920 with a BBA degree. He leaves his wife, Anne (Abrams), brother, Abraham Stone of and a Brockton. Services will be at noon tomorrow in Temple Israel, Brockton. Burial will be Pride of Jacob Cemetery, West Roxin bury.

Mrs. Shirlee Cotler Lexington civic leader Funeral services for Mrs. Shirlee (Saftlas) Cotier, 47, Lexington civic leader, will be held at 1 p.m. at Temple Isiah, Lexington. Mrs.

Cotler died yesterday at Symmes Hospital, Arlington, after long illness. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery, Lexington. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Mrs. Cotler graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Art in 1952. For the past five years she worked at the Sherwin Williams Design Center in Lexington.

She was Chavarah chairman for Temple Isiah, former chairman of the Temple's social action committee, and chairperson of Social Action for the Northeast Region of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. She served as a member of the Lexington Chapter of the AFS Selection Committee. She also was Lexington chairman of the De Cordova Museum in Lincoln. She leaves her husband, Morton; two sons, Reed and Jared; two daughters, JoEllen and Marjorie, and her mother, Mrs. Regina Saftlas of Philadelphia.

Stanley E. Davis Restaurant manager Stanley Davis, 68, of Revere Beach parkway, Revere, retired manager of the Hayes-Bickford Restaurant in Park Square, Boston, died Saturday in Beth Israel Hospital. Born in Camden, Mr. Davis moved to Boston 30 years ago. He leaves his wife, Dorothy I.

Call Globe Classified. 929-1500 LEGAL NOTICES 15 killed in weekend accidents Police report at least 15 persons were killed on New England highways during the weekend six in Massachusetts. Massachusetts State Police said three young people were killed early Saturday morning when their car slammed into the rear of a parked tractor trailer on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Charlton.

Killed were Alan Gullotti, 21, the drive, and passengers John C. Tyman, 21, and Eileen R. Moses, 20, all of Waltham, Mass. Police said the truck driver, Thomas V. Driscoll, 30, of Gardner, had stopped on the shoulder of the limited access highway to check his cargo.

Driscoll was treated for shock at Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge, Mass. In Dracut, police reported Raymond Vivier, 21, of Tyngsboro, was killed Saturday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck. Joseph Coyne, 17, of Norwood, died after he was hit by a car Saturday while he was crossing Rte. 1 near Cross Street in his home town. Gary Meyers, 23, of Andover, suffered fatal injuries Saturday when his car skidded on an icy bridge on Interstate 93 in Sanbornton, N.H., and flipped over.

Steven Hagar, 21, of Attleboro, was killed Saturday when his car collided with another vehicle on Rte. 104 in Bridgewater, I Mass. Police said Christopher R. Simpson, 17, of Canton, was killed Saturday in a twocar collision in Winsted, Conn. A head-on collision on Rte.

10 in Winchester, N.H., early Sunday claimed the life of Richard Castine 45, of Winchester. Police said Kevin Paquette, 20, of Winchester, driver of one vehicle in the accident, was charged with drunken driving. Two Ossipee, N.N., men died early yesterday when their van skidded off Mountain Road in Ossipee, rolled over and slammed into a tree. State Police identified the victims as Alan Shannon, 22, the driver, and Kirk Ryder, 18. Another New Hampshire man, John Baker, 20, of Epping, was killed Saturday when the truck he was driving hit several trees off Rte.

101 in Epping. Three people, including two Green Mountain College students, were killed Saturday in a two-car collision in Rutland, Vt. They were Robert Davis, 20, of Cuttingsville, Darlene Huse of Cazenovia, N.Y., and Wendy Collins of Brattleboro, Vt. Ernest Howarth School baseball coach Ernest "Benny" Howarth, 75, long-time baseball coach at St. Mark's private school i in Southboro, died yesterday in the Saybrook Convalescent Home, Old Saybrook, after a long illness.

A native of Guilford, Mr. Howarth was graduated from Guilford High School and Wesleyan College in Middleton, where he majored in mathematics. He taught mathematics and coached baseball at St. Mark's for 22 years until his retirement in 1967. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Noble); two sons, Ernest Howarth of Old Lyme, and John, of Concord, four brothers, Percy of Rocky Hill, Walter and Raymond, of Hamden, and Warren, of Guilford; three sisters, 1 Mrs.

Curtiss Sadler, of Illinois; Mrs. Ethel MacGregor, of Guilford, and Mrs. Robert Cass, of Killingworth, Conn. and sixgrandchildren. Victor Wolff Victor Alfred Wolff, of Pinehurst road, Belmont, a retired executive with the Clifford Manufacturing died Saturday at home.

He was a 1919 graduate of Yale and a veteran of World War in which he served in the 1st Division's 6th Field Artillery and was with the first American battery to fire in the war. He was a member of the Winchester Country Club. He leaves his wife, Eileen Altree (Taggart) Wolff; two daughters, Mrs. Remington A. Clark of North Andover and Mrs.

Alexander Alexander Jr. of Palm Beach, Fla; and five grandchildren.
