But Dunn's deal fell through, allowing Channel 68, at the time owned by Boston University, to sign a two-year contract The deal worked well for the Red Sox, but Channel 68 hemorrhaged as much as $6 million a year carrying the 70 or so games. The station declined to exercise a $14 million option in 1998, leaving the door open for new suitors. Offers included a 10-year deal from Fox as well as one from Home Shopping Network magnate Barry Diller. JCS eventually won the right to carry last season. The search for a new television partner started after the Red Sox fired JCS at the end of the season.

Several outlets lobbied for the over-the-air broadcast package, including Channel 25, Channel 38, Channel 56, and a bizarre combination of Diller's Home Shopping Network and Channel 5, an ABC affiliate. In the past, the Red Sox have opted for the most unlikely of television partners to solve short-term needs. But those kinds of two- and three-year deals made it difficult to increase ratings on a sustained basis. The team wants expensive rights fees, but those fees have prohibited television partners from making a profit. NESN has the exclusive cable rights to the team, but that could change in the near future to allow a Fox cable arm, Fox Sports New England, to carry Red Sox games.

Fox has a similar deal with the New York Yankees. The network's flagship station in Manhattan signed a two-year deal last year that called for the broadcast of 50 games. Most of those are shown during late-night hours or afternoons, allowing Fox to air its prime-time programming. Ratings skyrocketed, making the station's $25 million-a-year rights fee a solid investment In making an agreement with Channel 25, the Red Sox are trusting the station and its network to steadily increase ratings so they can make even more money in a future television rights deal. The Red Sox have all but ended their search for a new television partner, agreeing in principle to a deal with Channel 25, the Boston Fox affiliate, to air at least 65 games next season, with the rest remaining on New England Sports Network.

Channel 25 general manager Greg Kelley called reports of a deal "premature" but a source familiar with the negotiations said the parties have a deal that will be announced soon, perhaps today. Over the years, the Red Sox have been a money-losing proposition for their television partners. Channel 38, for instance, had the rights for two decades before surrendering them in 1995 after losing $8 million that season. The most recent Red Sox TV deal ended in disaster, as JCS New England Television Network, a start-up company run by former CBS president Gene Jankowski and Kevin Dunn, could not come up with about half of the $10 million rights fee. Red Sox officials were hard-pressed to find a replacement for JCS.

For the most part, local stations with network affiliations could not afford to preempt prime-time programming to air games, nor could most afford the asking price. Opting for independents, as the Red Sox have done in recent years, solved short-term problems but created long-term nightmares. The first disaster occurred in 1995. A group of investors headed by Dunn secured the Red Sox rights and promised to pay an estimated $67 million over five years. That came to about $3 million more per year than the other offers, including one made by a syndication group that included Jack Connors of Hill Holliday and former Channel 25 general manager Gerry Walsh.

is social worker who has knowledge of the family and docu mented evidence or records of their need; or countersigned It had to have been among the most imposing sights in baseball: Jimmie Foxx, one of the most powerful righthanded hitters in history, standing at the plate in Fenway Park, with the Green Monster looming a mere 300 feet away down the left-field line. The prospect so enticed Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey in 1935, two years after he bought the team, that he swung a deal with Connie Mack to bring the Philadelphia A's slugger to Boston for the '36 season. In anticipation, Yawkey had a 23-foot screen installed atop the Wall to keep some of the home run balls from sailing onto Lansdowne Street. Foxx, who is No. 38 on the Globe's list of the top New England sports figures of the century, did not disappoint Foxx, also known as "Double and "The Beast," came to the Sox with impeccable credentials.

In the four seasons before he joined Boston, Foxx led the American League in home runs and slugging percentage three times, and twice was Most Valuable Player (in 1932, when he hit .364 with 58 home runs and 169 RBIs, and 1933, when he won the Triple Crown, hitting .356 with 48 HRs and 163 RBIs). When Yawkey paid Mack $150,000 in the trade for the 29-year-old Foxx, it was part of a two-year spending spree that also brought Joe Cronin and Lefty Grove to town. While the Sox didn't win a pennant during those days, interest in the team was revived. The muscle-bound Foxx became an instant hit with the Fenway fans. In his first season, he hit .338 with 41 homers and 143 RBIs.

His best year with the Sox was 1938, wln he won his third MVP award. Fox walloped by a clergyperson who has up-to-date congregation census records andor documentation of the families' need. SMC 50 home runs and had 175 RBIs, still Red Sox records, and led the league with a .349 average and .704 slugging percentage. Thirty-five of his homers came at Fenway.

"He was as strong as a bull," said Red Sox teammate Doc Cramer. "He'd take a hold of your leg right there and put the whole prints of his fingers right in it" Said Yankees pitcher Lefty Gomez, "Even his hair has muscles." When he was traded to the Cubs early in the 1942 season, Foxx's playing days were nearly finished, but in six seasons with the Red Sox, he had 222 home runs and 788 RBIs, and batted .320. His .605 slugging and .429 on-base percentages trail only Ted Williams in club history. For his career, Foxx hit 30 or more homers in 12 straight seasons and had at least 100 RBIs in 13 straight He ranks fourth all time in slugging percentage sixth in RBIs and ninth in home runs (534). Foxx worked briefly as a Red Sox radio announcer in 1946.
