the TriNynEG daily tribute, si, isoi. 3 writtenTortiie women. A Dance at Mr. Sin-prise Party-Mrs. Jones' Tea, Talk About tbe Charity Ball Somber of Entertain-nieuts Held.

The aliominable weather of tho week, and the atill more abominable condition of the etreeU resulting therefrom, the topic one heard cm every tide thia week, but notwithstanding several partic have been given during the week with much success, and the attendance at the theatre ha been good almost every night. Iu Winnipeg it I ia always a noticeable fact that weather I haa little influence over the people if they are going to a party or any amuaement. Whether it ia that tin are ao used to it, or that they have ao much apirit, remaina a mystery. After all, if yon can manage to face a storm like that of Thursday evening, it ia a great temptation to go aut to eome place of amusement rathor than stay in and mope, and generally my own experience ia that if I 'alto the trouble to go thnmuh the disagreeable part of it I am mure than ready to enjoy myself afterwards. The largost social event of the woek was the dance given by Mrs.

O. W. Ciirdlcstone, Kiver avenue. Fort Rouge, on Wednesday evening for Miss Kirkpatrick, of Toronto, who, as I mentioned last week, ws staying for a few days with Mrs. John Gilt, befnro continuing hor journey t' Ki-aiua.

The night was one ot the wore' of tlm week of stormy nights, the rain nn ng down in torrents and tno wind ll wiuk alo. Nevertheless very few of tin ao mvii, were prevented from attendin Tbe house was a blaze of light and vny prettily arranged, the large rooms thMA'U into 01. for dancing and various comfortable little sitting-out places, hich are so much appreciated at a dance. Unfortunately an orches'r which had leen engaged dnl not arrive but the dance went merrily ou and proved in every way a perfect success. A novel and pleasing innovation was tho sot of ladies' lancers.

Tile interval after aiippcr being thus agreeably passed which geuerally, in the absence of the men, cauxes a lull Mrs. Girdlestone received in a dress of black gros grain silk, Miss Gird leatone wore a very pretty gown of hite Henrietta cloth with loops of white satin ribbon. Miss Sutherland, who is at present visiting Mr. Jirdlestone, wore white ail with cherry colored ribbon and red geraniums. Among other noticuble drenscs were Mrs.

following are Jn.VJi" J.W. Hi-nry, Mi-1'bUllpa, ItO, Hlmp-ou O.A II. iu. -11 order, J- HAKRIrt, NO SNOW FOR TEN YEARS. A Tribune Kei.nrter'ii niin-lf-w Vif a Uau Kruiu Fur-off Chili.

Herman Coiuinir to MiitiKoli.i, WlnTe They Have Greater Freedom. Johan Birmisrh and family arrived from Temuco, South Chili, on Friday morning, after a tedious journey, lasting nearly six weeks. They left their rcjent home on the 8lh of March, and have travailed by way of Talcahuano, Panama, Xaw York and Ottawa. Mr. Birmisch wa ren by a TRinfMK reporter yesterday, and although he did not know a word of English he spoke Spanish and German fluently, and the following Interesting facta were gleaned from his utterances: He had not seed snow for ten years until he reached this country.

He and his family were delighted with the beautiful white snow i the youngest member of his family could not understand what snow was, a ahe had never teen any before. Mr. Birmisch left hi native land (Germany) ten year ago, being at that time assisted by the Chilian government in the wsy of fro transportation from Hamburg to Chili, free land, implements, seed grain, and strnk to commence farming with, aud in addition to this utlicient money given by monthly iwstal-menta durum the iirsl Tear with which to purchsse provisions. Of course the amount wa charged up acaintt the land and remained the first lieu agtiust all he possessed until paid off, and every cent wa expected to be returned withiu the first Un years of settlement. "Are these debts ever "In the majority of can they are, and a large number of Herman colonists have been fairly successful, not only managing to pay off their liens during the first tew yoars, but they have also succeeded in saving sullicient money to come out to Manitoba and make a fair start here on a new basis with greater freedom.

Threo other families are now on the way, and many other are preparing to follow in their foointepa?" "Are they not contented when, doing so well, then?" "They would lie but for one great drawback, which is the cauio of their leaving. The fact is the cmei a of Chili are not properly protected by the government; they are subject to tho onslaughts of mar-auders, who take away their stock and horre, and complaint to the government otliciuls are unavailing. There is practically no recnurce, as your demands for redress are unheeded. Some months ago I got a letter from Mr. Csrstens, German ullicer at Winnipeg, and he afterwards sent me some German pamphlets which convinc ed as that yon had a good country here, and so we came.

We expect to farm in your land more successfully even than we nave done and will not have robbers to contend with." Mr. Birmisch has not yet decided as to his ultimate location..
