THE BOSTON GLOBE NATION SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1999 Clinton coy about Senate race as she boosts reading program 1 By Jill Zuckman GLOBE STAFF 'A i National Briefs California JYorld's tallest tree is 367-foot redwood T-JKIAH An ancient California redwood tree that towers 367.5 feet above the forest floor has taken the official title of being the tallest living thing in the world. The giant, dubbed "the Mendocino Tree" and estimated to be between 600 and 800 years old, is located some 12 miles frest of Ukiah in northern Califor-fria's redwood country, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported yesterday. The results have been authenticated by the Guinness Book of World Records. (Reuters) However, Clinton made no direct mention of her political aspirations in the state of New York. "She's here as first lady," said Marsha Berry, her press secretary.

"This is the kind of thing she would do anywhere." If there was the slightest hint that the Empire State was on her mind, the only reference occurred when Clinton announced that the Cordelia Corp. had pledged $300,000 for Reach Out and Read, including $50,000 for Greater New York. There were a few less-than-ob- lique allusions to life beyond the White House. House Speaker Thomas M. Finneran presented Clinton with a Dr.

Seuss book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" inscribed, "Dear Mrs. Clinton, wherever you do go, enjoy the journey." Dr. Barry Zuckerman of pediatrics at Boston Medical Center, who helped develop the reading program, was slightly more overt. "I believe the first lady has not yet peaked," he said. "I believe her biggest and most important accomplishments are yet to come." On the day she announced that she will form a committee to explore becoming a candidate for the US Senate, Hillary Rodham Clinton came to Boston but was as coy as ever yesterday about her political intentions.

She helped celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Reach Out and Read program at Boston Medical Center, and the 10th anniversary of City Year at Faneuil Hall. 2 GLOBE PHOTO MAX BECH ERtft Hillary Rodham Clinton made no direct mention of her political aspi- rations during yesterday's Reach Out and Read program I I I I i for you? enough i So are our prices on top brand air conditioners!
