FOOTBALL Baseball: Walker gets a new pact Outfielder Larry Walker agreed to a $75 million, six-year contract extension with the Colorado Rockies. The agreement came less than two weeks after Walker openly wondered if 1999 would be his last season in Colorado.

"I've been shaking for the last three days," said Walker, "not only thinking about six years and all the-money that's involved, but just the fact that it's over and we can quit talking about What I'm so elated it's sick." Walker, 32, will make $5,075,000 this season as he finishes a five-year contract. The new deal calls for a $1 million signing bonus, $12 million each in 2000 and 2001, and $12.5 million annually from 2002-05 The Baltimore Orioles will be without Delino DeShields for 5-7 weeks after the recently acquired second baseman suffered a fractured left thumb in an intrasquad game in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. DeShields, who was signed to replace All-Star Roberto Alomar, was fitted for a cast after being struck by a line drive off the bat of Luis Matos Hall of Fame pitcher Catfish Hunter, 52, who is suffering from the neurological disorder Lou Gehrig's Disease, participated in pregame ceremo-' nies at the Yankees exhibition opener in Tampa. "I'm doing all right," said Hunter. "It's just my hands and arms don't work right." Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams told the Texas Rangers he will not be playing baseball for them this spring, choosing instead to prepare for next month's NFL draft Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell said Mark McGwire's record-breaking home run performance in 1998 had nothing to do with the dietary supplement androstenedione.

"Hand-eye coordination is something you can't get from a bottle," said Bagwell. Bagwell said he tried androstenedione during the winter before the 1998 season. After hitting 43 home runs in 1997, Bagwell dropped to 34 last season Commissioner Bud Selig canceled the owners' meeting scheduled for March 16-18, delaying consideration of the proposed sale of the Kansas City Royals until at least June. Mother Nature and coach Pat Burns combined forces to give the Bruins an unexpected day off yesterday. It was one, Burns said, the team desperately needed. The Bruins, fresh off a 2-1 loss at Carolina Wednesday, chartered here immediately after the game. They were expected to be in the team hotel by midnight and had scheduled an off-day skate at Montclair State University yesterday afternoon in preparation for tonight's game with the New Jersey Devils. But that's where Mother Nature came into play.

High winds, hail, and snow squalls that caused widespread power outages diverted the Bruins' plane from Newark to JFK International Airport in New York. The team then took a bus here and didn't arrive until just after 2 a.m. "They were bushed, we wouldn't have accomplished much," said Burns. "We played Tuesday, we played Wednesday night, and we have New Jersey coming up. It's been one tough stretch." A stretch, though, that with 9 of a possible 12 points (4-1-1) in the bank, has seen the Bruins catapult into the eighth and final playoff spot 2 points ahead of Florida with 21 games remaining.

"That's why we forget Wednesday night," said Burns. "It's over, it's behind us. Let's think about New Jersey. It's a big game. Heck, with only 21 left, they're all big games, especially when you're fighting for a playoff spot like we are." Defenseman Kyle McLaren echoed Burns's sentiments.

"Points are critical at this part of the season," said McLaren. "You want to try and go out there and win every game." I know you can't, but we're at the stage now where we have to do everything we can to get every point we can." McLaren said he thought the Bruins suffered a bit of a letdown at Carolina, especially after ringing up three wins and a tie in their last four games at the FleetCenter. "Our road game hasn't been up to par this year," he said. Boston is 10-17-3 away from home. "That's tough because the last Atlanta (NFC): Signed CB Ronnie Bradford.

PAVEL BURE Expected to miss 2-3 weeks Names: Bure to have surgery on right knee Florida Panthers right wing Pavel Bure will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. Bure had an MRI yesterday that showed bone bruises, fluid on the knee, and a cartilage tear.

He is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. The four-time All-Star has 13 goals in 11 games since being acquired Jan. 17 from Vancouver Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Tom Barrasso broke his right hand gloving a shot in Wednesday's tie with Montreal and could miss the rest of the regular season Defenseman Gerald Diduck of the Phoenix Coyotes will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken foot after being hit by a shot in Tuesday's loss to the Bruins. The Coyotes also recalled former Bruin Steve Leach and goalie Jimmy Waite from Springfield of the American Hockey League Toronto Maple Leafs center Alyn McCauley is out indefinitely after suffering a concussion when checked into the glass Wednesday by New Jersey's Sheldon Souray. McCauley was knocked unconscious for about five minutes Chicago Blackhawks leading scorer Doug Gilmour may miss tomorrow's game against San Jose with pain in his lower back caused by an inflamed nerve The New York Rangers claimed rookie left wing Mike Maneluk off waivers from the Blackhawks Phoenix Suns reserve center Horacio Llamas underwent surgery on his left Achilles' tendon and likely is lost for the season.

HOCKEY couple of years we played strong on the road and kind of struggled at home. But the guys played hard Wednesday night. We were down, 2-1, and nobody quit. These guys care whether we win or lose and if we can re- bound that's a good sign." McLaren said it would be to the Bruins' advantage to get the first goal against New Jersey tonight. "We'd love to get that first one," he said.

"I think that's a confidence booster for this team. A team like New Jersey, you can't give up much, because if they're up one or two, they basically shut the door on you. They just play solid defense and have great i goaltending. We have to come out with the attitude that we're going to win the game." The Atlantic Division-leading Devils (34-20-8) are the NHL's best road team (20-8-2) but just 14-12-6 at Continental Airlines Are- na Bruins wing Sergei Samsonov, sidelined with a sinus infection that forced him to miss two games last week, said he feels fine and thinks he's back to 100 percent Samsonov, who had 22 goals and 25 assists Anaheim (NHL): Recalled Mike Crowley from Cincinnati (AHL).
