C6 THE BOSTON GLOBE SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 1998 'Sex in the City' offers savvy, cynical humor 1 tftfffff By Matthew Gilbert GLOBE STAFF i i (. i. 1 1 -v SEX AND THE CITY Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Damn, Cynth ia Nixon On: HRO Time: The two-episode premiere in tonight at 9:1,5. The regular time slot for the series will be Sundays at9p.ni Rated: TVMA voice-over, and occasionally she breaks the fourth wall to comment on the action. "Are men in their 20s the new designer drug?" she wonders.

While Carrie's big ideas are explored in each episode, "Sex and the City" is also savvy enough to smile wryly on its heroine's journalistic tendency to invent trends: "Were women in New York really giving up on love and throttling up on power?" Carrie asks, preparing for her next column. "What a tempting thought." Parker is perfect as a woman who is attractive enough to run with the beautiful people, but self-conscious and cautious enough to be gathering observations for a newspaper. "Sex and the City" is sure to offend some, with its retro and not very politically correct approach to the battle of the sexes. It takes a grim view of single living, generally putting the women at a disadvantage unless they are contriving revenge of some sort. Almost none of the characters is particularly likable unless he or she is angling for something.

What's refreshing about "Sex and the City" is that it pushes to a darkly comic extreme the situations that already fuel the many urban-singles sitcoms on network TV, particularly those with female leads like "Suddenly Susan" and "Caroline in the City." More social satire than sitcom, it looks openly at relationships steeped in ambivalence, fear, and the games people play. Cupid has deserted the New York of "Sex and the City," a nighttime landscape of clubs and galleries where men and women vie for what George Television Review Slippery bachelors and "modelizers" narrowly avoid depth and commitment, while beautiful, successful women wake up to discover they are 41 and lonely. He takes her home to see his Ross Bleckner painting, she angles for breakfast at Tiffany's. And so it goes on "Sex and the City," a shrewd and very cynical comedy that premieres tonight at 9:45 on HBO. Created by Darren Star, the man behind "Beverly Hills 90210" and "Melrose Place," it's an original series that is quite different from Star's sudsier ventures, particularly with its de-emphasis on ongoing story line.

The concept, based on Candace Bushnell's columns for the New York Observer, has Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw writing about the Manhattan dating scene by using her own experiences and those of her three close friends. She's a self-labeled "sexual anthropologist," and she goes on nightly field trips to note the mating habits of the wealthy and maybe bring home something resembling romance for herself. With all the late-night clubbing and yuppie at-tilude, the New York of "Sex in the City" looks more like the 1980s versions portrayed in books and movies like "Bright Lights, Big City" and "Slaves of New York." Parker and her 30-some-thing friends are fairly obsessed with the rules of chic culture, gathering regularly to engage in racy and ironic talk about whether the man or the Dave Matthews (center) with, clockwise from left, Carter Beauford, Boyd Tinsley, Stefan Lessard, and LeRoi Moore. Matthews Band wows 52,000 fans at Foxboro PHOTO NORMAN JEAN ROY Clockwise from bottom, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, Sarah Jessica Parker. woman has the power in a given situation, and what role money plays in the game.

Along with Parker's Carrie, the women are Kristin Davis's naive Charlotte, Cynthia Nixon's intellectual Miranda, and Kim Cattrall's predatory Samantha. In tonight's episode, the weakest of the three sent for review, Carrie experiments with the typically male approach to sex, trying to have no feelings afterward. In the second episode, the women deal with modelizers (men who date only models), and in the third, called "Valley of the Twentysometh-ing Guys," they mix it up with a few slackers. Parker deploys Carrie's thoughts in a witty MATTHEWS Continued from Page CI big dance at Foxboro Stadium, playing before a sold-out 52,000 fans and giving them their money's worth, though only after a herky-jerky start. Clearly, the Dave Matthews Band's stadium virginity was apparent in the early going.

The group came with a too-small circular video screen behind the stage (about a third of the size of Pink Floyd's screen). And curtains on each side of the stage even blocked part of the screen, especially if you sat in the loge and bleacher seats. And the NEW MENU FEATURING PENNE PASTA WITH WOOD GRILLED CHICKEN. NORWELL (61 7) 659-618 DAVE MATTHEWS BAND With Beck and Ben Folds Five At: Foxboro Stadium last night "Opening Night Live." Taking further risks, the band played a lot of new material early: "Don't Drink the Water" (a grinding defense of Native American rights), "The Last Stop" (with Middle Eastern accents showing a Led Zeppelin influence and featuring virtuoso violinist Boyd Tinsley), and the transporting story song, "The Dreaming Tree," about the loss of innocence. It was buoyed by magnificent electric-banjo improvisation by Bela Fleck, a Matthews friend (and onetime Boston-based bluegrasser) who sat in frequently last night.

The show really started to turn around with the contagious, country-rocking "Tripping Billies," a band staple that brought everyone to life. It was preceded by Matthews's crowd-pleasing words to fans sitting in the far corner of the stadium: "When we're done, we're going to walk up and smoke a fat one with you." Matthews may have struggled at times last night, but he still gave his all to the fans. Speaking of the crowd (which included New England Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe), it gave a respectful reception to opening acts Ben Folds Five (an Elton John-influenced crew that was much better than its KISS concert set hinted last Saturday) and the oblique, streetwise Beck. The latter's junk-culture-obsessed, hip-hoprock pastiche was at times poseur-laden, but at other times brilliant as, on "Jackass" and "Loser." CARL'S PAGODA RESTAURANT OLD NAME UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT.
