him a lot in that situation." Harvard then got its chance from the 25 and on the first play, corner-back Roy Hanks stepped in front of a Jay Snowden pass for a game-ending interception. It was a frustrating finish for the Crimson. They outgained Columbia, 312-186, although Murphy said they need to have better pass-run balance (they gained 244 yards rushing, 68 passing). Harvard senior tailback Eion Hu ran for 118 yards to become the school's all-time leading rusher, passing Vic Gatto and finishing the day with 2,230 yards in 20 games. The Crimson also got a big game from freshman Chris Menick, who gained 91 yards on 25 carries, and played tough defense.

But at the end they were 0-1 and had lost back-to-back games to Columbia last year the Lions scored with 19 seconds left for the first time since 1954. Hu thanked Sean Riley and the rest of the offensive line for their part in the record. "That's it for the record," he said. "I don't care about the record. I don't care how many yards I rush for.

We made too many mistakes." Even after Harvard had squandered the 13-0 lead, Columbia tying that sucker in the end zone," Murphy said. "We still got it down to the 1. But we made some fatal mistakes that really overcame a great effort. Harvard had third and 1 at goal line with 1:36 left but a delay of game penalty pushed the ball back. After an incomplete pass, the Crimson lined up for what could hav been a winning 22-yard field goal, -J But the snap was high and "Columbia standout defensive end Mar-cellus Wiley broke through (Ad blocked the kick.

"They made the plays when they, absolutely had to," Murphy After a scoreless first Harvard took charge. Korinke's first of two field goals in the second period a 23-yarder started it. 'rii The Crimson then quickly turned two Columbia turnovers into a i3-(f lead. Harvard freshman Aron Natate1 sacked Thomason deep in the Columbia end to force a fumble and'Ja-son Hughes recovered on the Colunv' bia 6. Hu scored on the next Three plays later free safety Jeff Compas intercepted a Thomason pass for his ninth career pick.

I(or-inke kicked a 38-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the half. Columbia rallied on an 11-yard! Thomason-to-Bert Bondi pass and 22-yard field goal. liFTTETiit 1M Crimson could not hold off Columbia. Trailing Harvard, 13-0, at half-time, the Lions came back. Facing a late Crimson field goal try with the score 13-13, the Lions blocked it.

Then Columbia owned overtime and handed Harvard a 20-13 season-opening loss. "It never should have gotten to overtime," said Harvard coach Tim Murphy. "We had our foot on their throats a good part of the game and we didn't finish them off." The Crimson won the overtime coin toss and opted to give Columbia first crack from the 25-yard line. It was the last thing that went right. Quarterback Bobby Thomason threw incomplete but Harvard was called for roughing the passer and the Lions had a first down on the 12.

Thomason missed David Ramirez on the left side, then hit him on the right for a touchdown. "We came back in a different set and David had pretty much lone coverage all day," said Columbia coach Ray Tellier. "The guy touched the ball 13 times last week, counting returns, and he got over 100 yards. Every time he's touching the ball we're getting 7 or 8 yards, one thing or another, whether he's running or catching the ball. He has to get more involved because he makes plays." Parcells would like to see Meggett get the ball 15-18 times a game.

"Let him run six or seven times, catch four or five passes and run a couple of kickoffs and punts," said the coach. "That's what you want to do. If you do that most of the time, he'll have a big play in there. Most of the time." Meggett had 132 total yards last week against the Cardinals. In addition to 87 on punt returns (with a long of 36), he rushed seven times for 26 yards and ran back one kickoff for 19 yards.

He also attempted one pass (incomplete) and did not catch any passes. Parcells questioned what appeared to be Meggett's reduced mobility last year, saving, "Last year he was too fat. This has made a big difference for him. He's got much better quickness. He was toting his piano last year.

It's not only 4 pounds. That's what he says. Last year, he makes weight at 190 and he plays the game at 194 or 195. This year, he's coming in before practice at 186. That's a 9-pound swing.

You gotta watch him, though." Time will come for rookie Grier, too Parcells also plans to get rookie running back Marrio Grier more involved this week. Against Arizona, Grier carried five times for 28 yards, including a 16-yard run late in the game, the Patriots' longest run from scrimmage so far. "He's our fourth back, and eventually something's gonna happen where he needs to play," said Parcells. "The problem is he's worked out mostly as a fullback and we put him in as halfback last week. He was out there on the goal line on the touchdown pass to Ben Coates.

He was goofing around back there. He didn't know where he was supposed to be." Said Grier, "My main job has been special teams. I've tried to play well there and earn some playing time." In retrospect, the Patriots and Jaguars were extremely fortunate in the college draft this year. The Patriots went in thinking they were going to end up with defensive end Cedric Jones of Oklahoma. Tom Coughlin woke up that morning in Jacksonville feeling he would make Nebraska running back Lawrence Phillips his first choice.

The Jaguars even had a club executive in place to deal with Phillips, who was living in Los Angeles at the time. But the morning of the draft, something in his gut told Coughlin to back away from the controversial running back and take linebacker Kevin Hardy of Illinois, which he did. Hardy has been terrific, and if the first few games are any indication, he looks like a star of the future. Phillips is floundering with the St. Louis Rams and still beset by legal problems.

The New York Giants surprisingly selected Jones with the fifth pick, so the Patriots, choosing seventh, never had a shot Good thing they didn't Jones has been a bust to date, and his problem is traced to eye trouble. He underwent a cornea transplant right after his last college game. NFL scouts and coaches were aware of this. However, what they apparently did not know on draft day was that Jones had reinjured the eye a month earlier while horsing around with friends and needed another operation, though he didn't tell anyone. He has four tackles in three games and has been complaining of pressure, so he may need another operation.

Madden is party to an anniversary Can you believe that 25 years ago this week, the Patriots played their first regular-season home game, in Schaefer Stadium, beating John Madden's Oakland Raiders in Jim Plunkett's NFL debut? "I don't remember much about it except Plunkett threw a couple of touch-i down passes and beat us," said Madden. "We stunk that day. We had a i hard time winning an opener. I try not to remember the games we played bad." Madden also didn't recall that the pipes in the visiting lock-: er room burst that day just minutes after the game ended Field con-i ditions at Foxboro Stadium could become an issue, as the Revolution played last night against Columbus. Longtime groundskeeper Pierre i Landry resigned last week to take a new position and his assistant Den-I nis Brolin.

has taken over As promised, John Burke is seeing more 1 action. He was in on 34 plays last week and Parcells thinks hell be in there a lot again today, with the intention of resting Coates more i Also coming along in practice is tight endlong snapper Mike Bartrum, who, according to Parcells, "can catch it as good as Ben. This guy has really good hands." Outside linebacker Monty Brown has practiced i this past week, still nursing a strained left groin. Todd Collins may get the start Brion Stapp completed 20 of 32 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns, and J.R.
