$1.27 Bates goes to air, passes Tufts, 27-16 Special to The Globe LEWISTON, Maine Quarterback Hugo Co-lasante threw three touchdown passes as Bates rolled past Tufts, 27-16, yesterday in the final game of the season for both teams. Colasante connected with Tom Burhoe on tosses of 38 and 27 yards and teamed with Steve Olsen on a 13-yarder to account for the only scoring through the first three periods. Tufts got its offense rolling in the fourth period, scoring on Mike Band's four-yard run and a 58-yard touchdown pass from Dennis Works to Tracey Mach-lin. Bates put the game out of reach when Olsen ran eight yards for the final score of the afternoon. Tufts finished with a 3-5 record while Bates would up 4-3-1.

halfback option pass with 4:04 left in the third period to tip Springfield College, 10-7. Springfield had held the lead from the first quarter when Bob Weller tossed to tight end Jon Cherry for 21 yards and a touchdown. The Albany first-period points came on a 23-yard field goal by Larry Leibowitz. The winning Albany touchdown was on a drive that came after a Springfield march was stopped by a pass interception in the Albany end zone. Bowdoin took its third consecutive CBB (Colby-Bowdoin-Bates) championship in a row thanks to a narrow 15-14 victory over Colby.

Colby scored the first two touchdowns, one a 15-yard pass from Frank Sears to Paul Belanger, and the other a one-yard run by Joe Ciofa. But Bowdoin came back when Jay Pensavalle finished off a drive by tossing a six-yard scoring pass to Rich Newman. Tansavalle then ran the conversion on a quarterback keeper. In the final period, Bowdoin got the go-ahead points, again on a Pensavalle to Newman pass, this one good for 14 yards. The actual winning point was Mark Himmerlich's point-after kick.

At Hartford, quarterback John Papa threw three touchdown passes as Wesleyan crushed Trinity, 43-12, while Central Connecticut was pulling out a 21-19 victory over Southern Connecticut. It gave Central, which was winning its fourth in a row, a 7-3 record, its best record since 1973. At Springfield, AIC rolled up 401 yards rushing to crush Hofstra, 23-7, with freshman halfback Bob Bramble scoring a pair. Halfback Milt Williams scored on a 53-yard run on the first play from scrimmage and went on to lead Norwich to an upset win over previously-undefeated Middlebury yesterday, 34-20. The sophomore running back had quite an afternoon.

He carried 15 times for a total of 119 yards, including another touchdown on a two-yard run. Until the defeat, Middlebury had won 11 in a row. It tied the game at seven-all with 5:54 left in the first period on an eight-yard Matt Winslow-to-Jay Moore pass and then let Norwich take the game away. Mike Palmer finished off a Norwich drive with a three-yard touchdown run and then Jim Luscinski added a 39-yard field goal before Middlebury was able to score again when John Dobek dove in from the one with 1:44 left in the half. Norwich went up by 13 in the third period thanks to another Luscinski field goal (good for 27 yards) and Williams's second touchdown.

But Middlebury refused to say die. It counted on a Winslow to Dobek 15-yard aerial with 4:08 left and was driving for still another touchdown with slightly more than a minute left. Middlebury had the ball on the Norwich 18 but Larry Fitzpatrick picked off a pass and ran it back 85 yards a school record for six more insurance points, putting the game away. The top ground gainer was Middle-bury's Roy Heffernan, who got 127 yards in 23 carries. At Springfield, Albany State's Ed Sellers grabbed a five-yard toss on a SIZE PRICE 155x13 33.Z0 165x13 35.45 175x13 38.65 165x14 36.90 175x14 42.70 185x14 43.95 155x15 35.45 165x15 39.20 18570-13 52.45 18570-14 59.85 FIT.
