The Gate is said to be handsomely fashioned of tile and stone, but no one can be sure because at the moment it reposes in 88 crates somewhere in South Boston. Each crate is filled with small parts there are eight boxes of lion parts alone and the whole thing goes together like a Chinese puzzle, so to speak.

The Gate is a gift from the Republic of China (i.e. Taiwan) to the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of New England. The gift came because Sloan, five years ago, included a drawing of such a gate in a planning document for Chinatown. Leaders of the Chinese community liked it and the donation was the result. The trouble, of course, is that a gate in 88 crates (unlike the rain in the plain in Spain) is of no use to anyone, least of all the Chinese Benevolent Association which is paying the storage fee.

But how to pay for getting it out, assembled, and up? Enter Edward Ingersoll Browne with a bequest to Boston of $610,000 per year for "improving the public rights of way." Sloan asked for part of the money for the Gate. All looked sunny until another hitch: one of the Browne Fund's For want of a better title, we'll call this story "The Chinese Gate Caper." Ifs a poignant chapter in the continuing story of John Sloan, BRA architect. This column's readers may recall Sloan's numerous earlier triumphs, each one followed, as night follows day, by a corresponding disaster. It was Sloan, for instance, who led the memorable, although aborted, crusade to plant the 50-foot-tall Sankey Milk Bottle atop the highest reaches of City Hall Plaza. It will be recalled that despite Sloan's subtle tactical maneuvering, the forces of Good Taste-crept out from beneath City Hall disguised in double-knit blazer suits, captured the Bottle and banished it to the Children's Museum.

It was Sloan, too, of course, who fought the good fight to create Boston's rollicking Combat Zone, even to the point of personally designing the marquee of the Pussycat Cinema. Indeed this ranked among Sloan's outstanding urban accomplishments right up until two weeks ago, when, in the early dawn of Columbus Day, a BRA work crew forklifted the entire Combat Zone to a new site on Route One in Peabody. According to BRA spokesman Ralph Memolo, no one has yet informed Sloan. And it was Sloan who led the drive to persuade Jordan Marsh to preserve its Victorian brownstone facade on Washington street, rather than demolish it in favor of what many persons mistook, before redesign, to be a new harbor tunnel exhaust-fume bunker. It was a memorable series of attempted accomplishments and it lifted Sloan this year to the coveted all-concrete desk of Director of the BRA's Design Section.

With that leverage, Sloan has again turned the town on its ear with his proposal to erect the Chinese Gate. The Gate would span Beach street r' Rendering of the proposed Chinese Gate shows how it would look spanning Beach street at Atlantic avenue, forming a gateway to Boston's Chinese community. nese Gate Caper as in the past, John timedia show that has meant much' to Sloan will press on. Indefatigable, Sloan phoned the Far East desk in Washington: Old China hands mulled, memoed, responded that no, at this time they could see no objection. What will happen next? The Browne Fund executors were to meet late this month. Our readers, we know, await with thumping hearts the result.
