Globe Staff Amherst, by far the more experienced and talented team, struck with the quickness of a cobra by scoring twice in the first seven minutes and then displayed a potent defense at Ellis Oval yesterday as it defeated Tufts, 42-20, before 11,052 homecoming fans.

The Lord Jeffs, who had one of their few off seasons las year, scored the first two times they had possession. Bob Sternberg scored the first on a one-yard plunge off right tackle. This one was setup by a 34-yard screen pass from Mike Newman to Sternberg which; carried to Tufts's 15. With just seven minutes gone the visitors clicked again when Newman, who figured in four touchdowns, tossed a six-yard scoring strike to swift Steve Hurwitz. The big play that set the stage for this touch down was a 44-yard punt return by Mark Kotfila to the Jumbo 12.

Amherst climbed to 21-0 in the second period when Newman hit 6-fi tight end Bill Swiacki from five yards out. Tufts managed to keep its home crowd alive when it finally scored seven seconds before intermission when Mike Band took a pitch from Chris Connors and banged over right tackle from the 1. The touchdown was set up by a 37-yard pass from Connors to John Casey. The third quarter also belonged to Amherst as it built a 35-14 lead. Newman tossed a touchdown pass to Sternberg which covered 21 yards, and then the Amherst native scored himself on a circus 60-yard run which actually went about 110 yards.

Newman faded pass from his 40 and found all receivers covered. He then cut to his right, eluded a would-be tackier here, another there and started to cut back to the opposite side. Newman broke three more tackles before he danced into the end zone. Tufts countered with a scoring pass from Connors to Tracey Maclin. Amherst made it 42-14 early in the fourth on Rich Minicus's 14-yard scamper.

Amherst's super fast defense sacked Connors six times. Newman led Amherst's offense with his long TD run and three scoring passes. "It was just a great day all around," Newman said. "The offense was sharp and the defense gave us good field position. We're a good team and should our remaining games.

"I ran 60 yards for a touchdown? No fooling. Well, that's a first for me. I usually get caught from behind because I don't have great speed. "I admit I did hot dog it a bit after I scored, but that was because I looked at the touchdown as a belated birthday present. My birthday was Thursday." At Salisbury Md.

Army marches over HC, 48-7 By Roy Mumpton Special to The Globe WEST POINT, N.Y.

It was a day of nostalgia and new records as Army's superior football forces rolled up a 48-7 count against winless Holy Cross here yesterday. West Point honored its three Heisman Trophy winners Doc Blanchard (1945), Glenn Davis (1946) and Pete Dawkins (1958) and presented these glittering greats of a more glorious gridiron era on The Plain to the capacity crowd of 41,376. Then the current Black Knights of the Hudson put together their season's biggest scoring spree against an outmanned Crusader team that provided a far better contest than the final score might indicate. But the visiting Purple's finest effort of a luckless campaign just couldn't cope with the swift run-' ning of Greg King and Jim Merrikin, passing of Leamon Hall and a trio of defenders whose outstanding performances hurt HC badly. Hall, who owns all of Army's passing records, pushed his total pitching gainage over the 5000 yard mark with his first fling.

The tall senior from Apoka, passed and ran the cadets 80 yards to their first touchdown immediately after the opening kickoff. Army 17. Holy Cross 7 Castelli kicked 27-yard field goal at Army got ball when Hilliard made his second interception, this time on a Peter Colombo pass and returned it 38 yards to HC 34 Army 20, Holy Cross 7 Castelli kicked 32-yard field goal at 13:40. Score was set up when Dave Charest intercepted a pass as it caromed off receiver Kelly's hands and returned ball 22 yars to HC 10. Mike Hanne's third sack of quarterback Hall on third down forced field goal try.

THIRD QUARTER Army 27, Holy Cross 7 Greg King raced 97 yards outside his left at 10 34 (PAT, Castelli, kick). King, who used two big blocks to turn the corner, outroced all pursuit down (he sideline on first play after Charest made his second interception of Morton pass on 3-yard line. King's scoring run was all-time Army record. Army 34, Holy Cross 7 Hell sneaked across from 1-yard line at (PAT, Castelli. kick) Army got ball on HC 16 when Charest blocked Kelly's punt.

Army took command for keeps on a 55-yard scoring scamper by Marrikin through the Purple's badlv beaten middle. The Crusaders never got close again, although they did gain a lot of yards (318 against Army's 448) only to have such alert defenders as Dave Charest, John Hilliard and Chuck D'Amico blunt their threats and open the gates for more Army scores.

Charest, a sophomore from Hereford, Texas, intercepted two passes and blocked a punt. Hilliard also stole two HC pitches and D'Amico was a tower of strength in the Cadets' front line. "It was those turnovers that ruined us," sighed HC coach Neil Wheelwright after. his team's seventh straight loss. "That and the big run; that broke our back." The 'big run' was a 97-yard scamper by King on the first play after Charest's second interception had stopped a long HC drive on the Cadets' three-yard stripe.

King, getting fine blocking help, got outside the Purple's right flank and outraced aM pursuit for the longest touchdown from scrimmage in Army history. Still, Homer Smith played all his Army regulars until the score had climbed to 41-7. "We had to, we were really concerned about the way HC kept coming after us," Smith explained. "They gave us all sorts of trouble, but this was a story of turnovers. They kept giving the ball to us, or rather we would take it away at the most opportune times."
