Boston. 1 Pauline i 1 Bishop Morris Fairchild Arnold of Belmont, the retired suffragan bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Massachusetts, died Thursday in Cambridge of a heart ailment He was 77. Bishop Arnold was assistant bishop in Boston from 1972 until he retired in 1982. He was born in Minneapolis and graduated as the valedictorian of Blake School there. He graduated magna cum laude from Williams College, being elected to Phi Beta' Kappa, and received his doctor of divinity degree cum laude from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge.

He was ordained a priest in 1940 and assigned to St. John's Church in Saugus as minister in charge, serving until 1943. In 1943 he joined the Army and served as chaplain in the war in Europe, earning four battle stars. When he returned in 1945, he became rector of Grace Church in Medford and chaplain to the Episcopal students at Tufts University. From 1950 to 1972, Bishop Arnold was rector of Christ Church in Cincinnati.

He was president of the Cincinnati Council of Churches for two years. He also served on that city's Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition, and on the boards of trustees of the Red Cross, Family Services and Better Housing League. He was coordinator for southern Ohio of the national urban diocese program and helped found and served as president of the Church and City Conference of rectors of major urban parishes. A series of hearings he directed helped bring Giuseppe Cucinotta, 59 Witts assistant at Sancta Maria Giuseppe Cucinotta of Belmont, a production assistant in the dietary department of Sancta Maria Hospital in Cambridge, died Thursday in Massachusetts General Hospital of a thoracic aneurysm. He was 59.

Mr. Cucinotta was born in Messina, Sicily, and came to the United States 20 years ago. He settled in Belmont shortly after arriving. He had worked for the Sancta Maria Hospital's nursing facility for 19 years. Mr.

Cucinotta leaves his sister, Anna Cucinotta of Belmont; two brothers, Giovanni of Concord and Santo of Messina; a nephew and a grandniece. He served as a delegate for the national Episcopal Church to the 1954 Anglican Congress; he was a deputy to the general convention from southern Ohio, and a member of the national church's program and budget committee. After he was elected suffragan, or assistant, bishop in Boston in 1971 and consecrated in 1972, he introduced long-range planning methods to the diocese and designed support structures to allow clergy, their families and laity to work in mutual ministry, He was vice president of the Episcopal City Mission. Bishop Arnold was also chairman of the board of trustees of the Episcopal Church Publishing Co. from 1977 to 1979. The company publishes The Witness magazine.

He retired from the clergy in 1982. Bishop Arnold leaves his wife, Harriet Borda (Schmidgall); a daughter, Jacqueline Arnold Crocker of Walnut Creek, a son, William Morris of Randolph, N.H.; and two grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 12 in Christ Church, Cambridge.
